The chemistry between John Astin and Carolyn Jones was fantastic. Sparks flew every time they did a love scene together. Astin said in later life that Carolyn was the one person that he missed the most.

Strange, wasn't it. It clearly marked her out as a bigger star than the rest of the cast. Which is bizarre for a fairly modest movie like this. It suggests to me the actress was quite grand! She was certainly not a bigger star than the great John Astin who played her husband Gomez. His resume of movies and TV roles is every bit as distinguished as hers. If I were him I'd have insisted on equal billing with her - but I guess he just wasn't that petty.

@@AZAComics John Astin (Gomez) talked about this in a TV interview, he was philosophical and had no interest in a fight but it's clear her billing was unusual. It probably says more about her bullish agent, than it does about her!

No disrespect to John Astin, but I expected Lisa to be the last surviving member. What is sadder is that if they are a real family, that means that John Astin had outlived both his children. I am glad to honor the original series and let it influence myself with their good qualities (including the love for the macabre🦇💀🕷🕸).

This may not be perfect, but I still like it. I like the little continuity nods thrown in throughout it. I love that Lady Fingers lives with them now ( so the relationship worked out for Thing. That's CUTE!). And I truly love to see "my" Gomez and Morticia being just so perfect again (John Asten and Carolyn Jones just are the two people i personally picture when thinking of Gomez and Morticia). I also truly had fun seeing Fester throughout this, and especially his "helpful" acts to the wannabe thieves. Plus, that song is great. Now I know a Halloween Carol. :) That said, yes, this special was not perfect. The plot makes very little sense, I see no reason for the existence of the new "main" family members and at some point there were just too many people in the same suit running around in that house! - And of course it is sad that Blossom Rock was too sick to reprise her role. All in all I am happy I found and watched this, though. Thanks for uploading.

littlebit080780 I think a good was to describe it would be that they're "aesthetically-distinct." There's a bit more to it than that, but that's the main thing. I'm also "aesthetically-distinct" in certain ways, so I sympathize with the original family. Like them, I'm often puzzled by the sorts of things other people like, and I think a lot of people are, really. But that doesn't make us evil. As you say, the Addams clan are generally nice to others. It's just a question of how they interpret "nice."

Seeing this in colour made me think that there were going to be more much to my disappointment to learn that it was a one off! Nobody could ever replace John Astin in this role, which any new version could never come close to equating this! I saw John Astin perform on stage some 20 years ago in Adelaide Australia at the fringe in Edgar Alan Poe production just to see him ! It was one of the most memorable performances I have ever seen which still gives me goose bumps! Hope he will live to pass 100 in good health! Such a unique actor! I watched this when it aired in 1977 and switched it off. Despite the reunion of most of the original adult cast, they couldn't live up to the original series. As mentioned below, the actors seemed bored, as if going through a reunion routine, or being let down at a class reunion because of the age factor. Perhaps the videotaping reduced their energy. Their mansion here looks too suburban, not "haunted" enough. It was interesting, though, the way Vic Mizzy rewrote his old theme to recall the original but make it as unlike it as possible - perhaps to signify the "new" in the "New Addams Family" or to circumvent whatever copyright issues lingered. (By the way, this would be one of Ted Cassidy's last appearances before his death two years later. Blossom Rock was too ill to reprise Grandmama, and she died the following year.) Thanks for posting this, for what it's worth.

it doesn't matter about how handsome he is, its about what the actor brings to Gomez. Plus the cartoon characters didn't have names and John Astin (the original Gomez) chose the characters name and basically developed him, so John Astin was perfect! And so was Raul Julia (RIP) he played a different kind of Gomez who wasn't as goofy and more focused on the situations that happened in the films. I too have all three of the original series and I have both films. So, apart from Tim Currey and Glenn Taranto, Raul Julia and John Astin captured Gomez perfectly. and, yes I love Anjelica Huston as Morticia, but there is only one Morticia for me and that's the original who was played by the lovely Carolyn Jones (RIP).

This is the most confusing version the Adams Family I have ever seen. Gomez has a brother who looks and acts almost exactly like him. He keeps referring to Wednesday and Pugsly (Jr.) as his children and they seem to live with him but then we see Wednesday and Pugsly (Sr. ) who are also their kids? Names usually get passed down from father to son or mother to daughter not brother to brother and sister to sister. And why do the younger ones look and act exactly like the older ones when they were kids? Are they clones? How does this even work?

While of course I LOVE the Morticia/Gomez dynamic & the other original cast,I had huge problems with the sets, family Halloween costumes and the writing. It's like these ppl doing these jobs never heard of the Addams family,tv show or original comics. It all lost its fun/campy gothicness ! Too bright & cheery for the main house & party rooms.( Though the kitchen and playroom were great)They were aghast at the kids costumes, yet the rest of the family guests mostly all wore the same sort of stuff, lol. And too many missed opportunities for their usual turning language around,so dreary, tragic, etc are great things to be,instead we got," they lived HAPPILY ever after ",( there was even a full episode about a 2nd honeymoon& finding babysitters satchel w/gumdrops & bedtime stories that killed witches & stories ended that way & they rushed home to save the kids!).Or how about 'Tish saying, " it was DELIGHTFUL"," Be of GOOD CHEER",etc, etc... *Sigh*

So NOT funny. What happened to this 1977 production? I was 12 at the time and watching this again 43 years later, I just don't understand how they could have permitted such a TV great to fall on its face. Much of the original cast were in this production. Ted Cassidy ("Lurch") would not die for another year or so. Even some of the original guest stars were cast. What the hell happened? There is no script and coming from Hollywood, California, myself I feel I have the right to point this out (from overexposure to the lifestyle). Don't you agree that the scantily clad muscle men gives the film an unnecessarily "gay" feel? WTF! Gomez Addams would doubtless agree that this revival of a great TV classic was a train wreck of a production, but not the fun kind of train wreck that Gomez orchestrated and thrilled to in the first two seasons (1964, 65). Too many scenes in this film revival were similarly a grisly, pointless train wreck! However, the ending was quite good and the Halloween song definitely memorable. The ending may have helped to set the tone and provide the creative impetus to the 1991 film with Raul Julia, Anjelica Huston, Christina Ricci, etc.

Although I know its the original cast, the feeling is not the same compared with the 60's show...they all seem tired of each other and bored, only gomez still has the same vibe, could be age (10 years after the original series), but its almost like this was a drag for them...and the writers really sucked with this too

I just saw this a few days ago and I couldn't agree more. I was pretty disappointed. Well at least it was nice to see them in color for a little while.

The original kids were in it. They played Pugsley Sr. and Wednesday Sr. There were different kids who played Pugsley and Wednesday Jr too. I think that they wrote that Gomez and Morticia had two more kids over the course of ten years and named them Pugsley Jr and Wednesday Jr.

Also in Mexico are for selling the DVDS with the three original seasons of 60's, includes extras and more. There are nine discs in total in three boxes, special edition. I have them and are real treasures for me. I didn't know this color film. Good, but is not the same.

I think Lisa Loring was the cutest and nicest Wednesday by far. I realize that the 1960's TV show and this special wasn't inline completely with the comics, but the dark portrayals that followed come off as very shrill on screen. The movies were the worst.

+dennybear17 I never would have guessed it was the original Wendsday actress Lisa Loring. I mean sure we all grow older and in the original show she was a child... but she just looked completely different and so I thought it was a new actress playing the part.. thinking Lisa Loring was not avaiable to do the special.

What was the point of having two Wednesdays and two Pugsleys? To their credit, they brought back all the actors they could bring back. They couldn't bring back Blossom Rock because she was dead.

I think it had something to do with the clowns who put this together planning to spin off a new Addams show, with a new cast, off of this wonderful piece of work, hence the double characters. Thank God it never happened.

I lasted 30 mins. I almost switched off less than 5 mins in when they flogged the French joke over and over and over again. The subversive wit that made the original so funny just isn't here. This is more like The Munsters frankly.
