Good video buddy👍🏻 I’ve noticed there’s a grey area between sprocket sizes. So many factors, torque, rpm, bar/chain size, and wood species. It’s fun to test on though.😁

@@knotbreakerright?! 😆 thought I had sprocket sizes down well until I got beat by a smaller saw at saw fest. I had a torque monster he had the rpm. Poplar is so soft that speed came out on top. Lesson learned. Had we been in hardwood, it would’ve been a much different story.

First 2 rounds looks like white oak. Really hard to split when it’s dry. Old wise tale, split white oak when it is frozen and I think that pertains to green wood.

Cool video. Seasoned wood is a bear to split. Why I split all mine when it's green. As far as sprockets go I found it to be dependant on saw and wood. In hard woods the faster the chain speed the smaller the chip. Goes so fast that it skips right over the top of the wood. Maybe retry your test in soft wood. Outcome might be different. Also dependa on the RPM Sweet spot in your specific saw. Stock go with 7 pin, ported try an 8 pin. In any event thanks for the cool vids. 👍🇺🇲

That bark looked a lot like white oak to me too. You got a chain grinder? If not I can drag mine along when I come out that way. I got the stone wheels and also the CBN wheel for 3/8 and .404 chain

Chain grinder? Like a miter saw style? If so, I have access to one. I'm not a fan of em, myself. I have the Ole faithful Timberline haha

Your base stump was too tall. Pick a wider but shorter (lower to the ground) base to split on and you will have better results.
