I mean, all the other ranks are simple. 1 is lowest 6 is highest, and champion is top 200 players. Onyx is different.

It's simple. Onyx 1500 is the lowest, 3000 is the highest. If you win, you gain an x amount of points based on the skill level of your opponents. So if you're 1650, and you win, you may be 1667 next. If you lose, it'll go down to 1633 instead. Champion rank is the top 200 of onyx rank, so say rank 200 is onyx 2500, everyone above 2500 will be in champion
