I've seen ads for the halo before but didn't think I'd ever become a customer. After all, it is a pricey device but considering we spent just as much (if not more) for the underground eXtreme dog fence system that doesn't have any of the cool technology as the halo, I'd say it's worth the cost.
Our circumstance for using this collar is probably not what most halo customers are using the collar for, but nevertheless it was worth a shot. While the collar didn't work for Bernard, overall I'd say it's still a collar I'd recommend trying if your dog isn't a working dog and doesn't have an instinctual drive to roam large areas. I'm not exactly giving up quite yet, but this highlights my first impression after finally completing the training and putting the halo to use for the first time.

Grateful for this honest review, you've given me more than enough info i need. with working breeds it isnt going to be able to override their drive to just turn around and come home. I have a beautiful apbt & i know his mental strengths and drive are far too predominant for such a collar now due to this wonderful video. i appreciate you and wishing bernard a long & safe life filled with so so much love ❤️

Thanks! So, I'm in the middle of training Bernard again with the spoton collar. They reached out to me and asked if I could test it out for comparison with the halo. I declined at first but then decided to give it another try, so I guess I'm still a little hopeful, LOL.

I had the spot on and after intense training It didnt work but at least they refunded me even after the return time had past....like you stated the pain tolerance is nulled by the job at hand for him... I watched this because Halo states for pyrs. and i was going to try it but I think ill start adding a live stock fence in his area instead... we have turkeys and chickens that free range....

Yea, I'm currently training with spot on but the results are really the same, as expected. The hot wire works and seems to do so even after the wire is removed once our GP has seen a wire there before, so I might try running a temp wire for a few weeks along our property to see if that could be the trick.

In Romania some of farmers attach a large stick on a chain that hangs from the collar. It keeps the dogs from running after predators so they favor staying with the herd and barking at them. Might try that, if you don't have any wire fences to catch it on.

I am so happy. I ran into your video because I have an Australian shepherd. Mix who has a very high prey drive. And I feel like she would do the same after ignoring the 300ft limit. But She is used to a E collar which I use when I don't want her getting close to the chickens. So come to think about it. I don't think I would want to spend that much on a brand new one. I would really like to try it out first to see if it works out for her. And it would be nice if we can get a free thirty day trial.

Thanks for the honest review. Was just about to purchase two for my livestock guardians. Ive got a hundred + acres but was just notified that a neighbor's trail cam saw them messing with bear bait, which is not cool on several levels. Was hoping this would work, but was skeptical. I'll have to invest in some fencing instead. That's a project i was really hoping to avoid.

I have the Halo 3. My 10 month old Australian Shephard is pretty good with the collar. We have 30 acres and she was getting into everything. I made a fence going around our house with about 1/2 acre. We also live on a very busy country road. I think the reason is, she had a training collar on at 6 months and was trained if she got a shock to come home, she was also trained with a whistle to come. So, it didn't take much training. She usually comes home with the first warning. She is a very strong willed puppy the numbers are high for her to pay attention and she also has long hair. I'll have to see when she is not a puppy any longer.

I bought the Halo collar about a year ago, and although the accuracy hasn't been great it's worked well enough. One complaint is that if you don't have cell service, you can't give your dog a correction, and the app is slow even when you're in service range and want to give a correction. So not very practical for adventures. But for containing my dog at home it's been ok. What really grinds my gears is that when I signed up the subscription plan was $4.99/month, and they've just doubled that price. This feels like a bait-and-switch to me, and a terrible way to treat customers. I wrote them about it, and they just told me how to cancel my subscription. So, I'm thinking of trying some other brand of dog collar just on principle. I don't want to support a business that treats its customers this way.

I have trained German Shepherds for over 4 decades and you have to start when their young and give them a visual reference "A Flag" of the perimeter. You can't just put one of these on an adult strong willed breed of a dog and expect it to work. I use the invisible fence and started training my dogs when they were younger 'Like a few months old' I put up flags around the perimeter and taught the dogs what was going to happen when they got too close to them and it works like a charm...
@woodlandacres
@woodlandacres 10 ай бұрын
Yea, our GP was perimeter trained since he was a pup...the exact method you described with a traditional ecollar. It was a flawless solution for us the first few years. After he matured though, he became too enticed by coyotes and it really only took him testing the boundary a few times to realize he could go after the coyotes. Retraining helped, and he still mostly stays around until he sees/hears a coyote and then all bets are off. I was hoping technology with halo would provide an edge, which is why I purchased it. After I made this video, I called three local dog trainers for help and all of them basically told me you can't train a GP to stay put without a physical barrier of some sort. Go figure...
@jkosh2046
@jkosh2046 9 ай бұрын
We perimeter trained our 2 GP's as well. We can leave ours off leash and they do a great job listening and coming when called, they stay right by our side, until they change their mind. We can weeks with no issue and one day, for whatever reason they decide, they are down the creek and the only way to get them home is to physically go get them. When they make up their mind, you can't change it. These dogs do not respond to correction training. Positive reinforced works best, but they still only listen about as well as a teenager. They are nothing like GSD's. They are a very old breed and their habits and temperaments have been ingrained for over 6,000 years. No way I'm changing that within my dogs life. You just have to know what you are getting into with these dogs and adapt to them. You also shouldn't have one if their instinct does not fit for what you need them for. It would be like using a chihuahua to pull carts.

It works really good, even for my smaller dog. Didn't need to have the shock on a high level either. The problem is, mine quit charging one month after the warranty expired. I doubt my 17 lb dog was really hard on it either. The halo 2+ isn't worth $700 even for just one year of use.

Everyone keeps telling me to shave his neck in order for him to feel the correction, but I know he's getting the correction. I honestly think it's just their high pain tolerance. After I returned the halo i called 3 area dog trainers to see if they could help with boundary training, and all of them said they wouldn't be able to train a GP, thought that was pretty funny.

question: is your fear that Bernard's flock of chickens will get attacked while he's away on the 200 acres you don't own? So your 9 acres will be at risk? I wonder how many miles out a dog hears? Is it remotely possibly that he intuitively knows when it's best to follow coyotes versus stay back with the flock? (despite that he always leaves the flock) I'm tempted to root for Bernard's dream of decimating coyote pack...if he wears a heavy gauge spiked type coyote collar (aka 'wolf collar' ) but then it's a pack vs Bernard so I wonder if unfortunately the fix is a couple more GLA's? St. Bernards Anatolian Shepherds? Great Pyrenees? (pricey and more chores & training and feed costs I know) We have packs of roaming uncollared dogs here who kill small livestock but don't eat them...while we've been tempted to get guardian animals when able...there is a pack of dogs so it's quite an investment to create our own pack...although I suppose there are larger animals (donkeys / llamas (many need adoption in these 2 breeds)(not sure small alpacas work w/ canines/unlikely) that might take less of them (challenging cost wise and ranch chore wise either way: have to provide different types of food to the GLA and more of it the more we need...almost tempted to build fencing like professional commercial pasture raised chicken ranches...little at at time...harder when doing it debt free...the portable electric fencing we use is so expensive for such a small area I'm thinking fencing the property might ironically be the way for us to go...much success to you...gorgeous Saint Bernard....Bernard...love his name! Wish you needed a dog sitter...he could chase our canine predators as far as he'd like, neighbors would all be grateful here...
@woodlandacres
@woodlandacres 9 ай бұрын
The funny thing is Bernard could easily dart across sections of hot wire that currently keep him contained, he literally could crawl under or jump the wire without touching it, but the pure sight of of a wire that he has been shocked by is enough for him to not want to get close. I really had hoped the beep of the collars would've acted like the physical sight of a wire but I guess their minds don't work that way. I've witnessed Bernard surrounded by 3 coyotes all standing just outside the fencing and I intentionally chased the coyotes into the pasture for Bernard to get them but they were way too quick for a dog his size. They would have to be cornered for Bernard to have a chance at catching up to them, but yes I am also curious how he would fare. His desire to run off after them when he isn't contained just seems to be instinctual, bc he isn't really doing it to protect our chickens. Oddly he doesn't really bark or has gone off after other dogs that he sees people walking on the road. It's something about coyotes that trigger him.

I found the Halo collar a very poor product. I bought a collar back in late 2020. Had multiple issues with it not working. Returned for a refund. This all took about a year to send it in multiple times and then to get the refund. In late November of 2021 they came out with an updated version. Claimed they had fixed all the issues. I applied my refund for the new collar. Upon receiving the new collar the same issues persisted. My dog would get beeps and corrections when no where near the boundaries. Corrections and beeps would be delayed. In the summer of 2022 it quit working all together. Would not charge. I would not count on these collars to completely safeguard your dog. The quality is not there. The connectivity can be spotty with anything on cell data or gps. They should not put your pet's safety on this. The workmanship and reliability is not consistent. Might as well spend the $ on fencing or an underground dog fence. If you do try it out, please be aware of the very short window of time to return it. A 60 day return policy melts away fast with training and product shipping.
