I think the Atriox being “dead” is important for a few reasons. First, it further differentiates the Banished from the Covenant, seeing as they fight on after their leader has been destroyed because they actually believe in the goals of the Banished. Second, it deepens Escharum by showing that he truly was loyal to Atriox’s vision and is trying to do his best for the Banished, while also knowing his days are numbered and sort of selfishly using the Banished’s resources so he can die in a legendary battle against Master Chief.

This is all true but also, the game didn't really give me any good reasons to care about Escharum in the first place. Since he was introduced I thought he was either a weak second-in-command, or some random banished leader because I thought Atriox was going to be the main villain but they decided to "kill" him off screen which was disappointing. We also find out the Escharum was already dying so it didn't even feel like a fair fight to begin with. They should've just stuck with Atriox imo

That double boss fight was pretty tough on Heroic but man once I hijacked the special chopper it was a piece of cake. Just a small detail: the pilot gives the master chief a pistol with a single round in it both as a nod to the pistol the chief receives from Captain Keyes, and to show that in a moment of desperation the pilot would have likely used it on himself.

So I'm going to attempt to win you over in regards to Escharum's death scene. Okay so Chief says "He was just a soldier, wondering if he'd done thew right thing" which is the part that even had me confused at first as well. Upon my second play through, that scene hit a little different and here's why. The Banished were formed from those that no longer wanted to be controlled by religious zealots and used as cannon fodder for the great journey. Instead they split off to to become the only thing they've ever been known, warriors. So Escharum being both a brute and banished, he would no doubt see his only path in life as one of glory and combat. You often see him boasting to chief and even other banished about his accomplishments as all he has ever desired was to be viewed as a champion, a warrior. At this point in his life, he is old, worn out, and exhausted. He finds shame in this and wants to show others his strength to the chief and most importantly, the banished. He feels that he has no value unless he is strong and aims to prove that he still is by defeating humanity's champion. You even see that when he learns of chiefs survival, he is borderline excited. This is the show of strength that he so desperately craved. His actions towards the end are not of malicious intent in my opinion, but that of desperation. He most desperately wants to fight the chief and decides, after many failed attempts to lure him, that kidnapping the pilot is his last chance. So I believe that Escharum chooses to be so horrible and violent because it is quite literally all he knows and his life depends on how strong he is. That roar he lets out right before the fight always gives me chills because of the music kicking in, and it encompasses everything that I've said in this comment. I do think the writing could've conveyed this better most definitely but this is what I gathered (and btw I could be completely wrong but it's a neat way to look at it)

I guess it is hard to understand the moment between Escharum and Master Chief if you are a civilian or don't have a martial background. Not only are they both soldiers. They are raised warriors, fighting since childhood, their lives being those of war. Not respecting Escharum because he wasn't to your standards of Human civilian morality loses any point when you consider Master Chief is absolutely immoral. He killed Humans and Aliens in thousands, killed fleeing Grunts, beat an old crippled guy to death with his fists (Regret). Neither Master Chief nor Escharum are moral, they aren't good. They are good warriors which what they were created to be and so they respected each other simply because they fought well.

I actually loved the escharum death scene. It hit for me tbh. There are a lot of subtleties about his character in cutscenes and audio logs. I wish the game did delve deeper into his character. Throughout the game you can tell he is definitely a menace, as are most brutes, but hes been tasked with handling the entire faction, and with his time limited, as evident by his breathing difficulties, he feels that his time is being wasted. With Atriox thought to be dead, he doesnt know exactly how hes going to handle the banished goals, and doesnt know if hell have the impact the banished need. That is until the chief arrives. This gives him new vitality, as the master chief is humaities last hope and regardless of their battle win or lose, he believes his battle with will inspire the banished to keep fighting and will have a lasting impact on their movement. I found that chief shower him respect because throughout the game in his own brutish way he was showing chief respect, by proclaiming him as such a meaningful foe.

Whew boy I have some comments. Yes I love Halo, mainly the original trilogy, Reach, and ODST. 5 was terrible, totally agree. The only thing I liked was the Sanghelios section and seeing Buck again. 4 did feel off for a Halo game but was ok. As far as gameplay and enemies go I fully agree. Fantastic. Graphics and art style. Fantastic. However the plot, setting, and characters were awful in my opinion. Overall Infinite is tied with 4 for me but getting the reverse wrong. Combine the good parts of both and I think you got a great game. Now back to criticism. Love going back to a ring but you mentioned it, the set variety is bad. Main story missions aren’t great, except the first. Throw back to the first Halo mission with a cool exploding ship set piece. The open world is pretty empty and the rest of the missions are pretty similar. It’s hard to get a good story when time jumping, fixing what they did in 5 and having the character problems I’ll mention next. There are 4 characters barely. The Chief which they did a great job with including his interactions and growth. Esharem was just annoying. Intro Atriox then kill him off screen. I know he’s back at the end but you don’t know that till after. Esharem just taunts and belittles you as you continually kick the Banished’s tail throughout the game and I agree that it’s weird that Chief shows him respect after the fight. Guy was an evil tool. I would feel bad about the UNSC getting beat but we weren’t there for it except the starting cutscene and that was Atriox. All the dead Spartans and marines we meet are nobodies we’ve never met or talk to. The best thing about Brohammer is that one interaction with Chief because of Chief, and his meme name cause it references Phohammer. The pacing of the open world aspect ruins him. I played slowly doing everything thing and very often forget he exists and on a second play through did just campaign his interactions and personality change so quick it’s weird and doesn’t feel right. The timeline is pretty jacked up I think. Then the weapon is at least there and I do like some of the interactions but she really isn’t Cortana. She pretty different from Combat evolved Cortana and even the infinite cutscene where you met the OG Cortana. Doesn’t have the same confidence, sassiness? I guess. New Cortana is kinda bubbly and airheaded to me. Also she’s upset Chief tries to delete her as she’s being hack and on multiple occasions expressed that she should be deleted. I get she doesn’t like that Chief didn’t trust her but come on. Also I don’t like insinuation that sees better than Cortana because she was willing to sacrifice herself so Chief could trust her. I think that moment just reminded Chief that was the reason he did trust Cortana, that was always a part of her and had just been skewed, thanks 5. Overall I felt alone playing with the weapon as a tag along that actually annoyed me if I put off the next mission too long. Hated the blade master boss fight. Was cheap, easy and tedious. Multiplayer the gameplay is pretty good but everything else is pretty terrible. I only like 2 maps but that’s just personal taste. Game ranking goes 3, 2, Reach, ODST, Combat evolve, 4, Infinite, Roblocks, 5.

@LostSoulNo3012812 жыл бұрын
My biggest issue with Infinite is the overall map. There was just no variety and it "blew its load early". You should have started off on a section of the ring that was completely intact, with the broken portion off in the distance and used as a final location. Also, there should have been multiple types of terrain, ranging from fields and trees to snowy tundra to a desert. The starting area should have been as is in terms of its biome. Fields, trees etc., and still kept as an open map, but one that was about 1/4 to 1/3 the size of what we actually got. Then after progressing to a certain point you're taken to the interior of the ring for a more linear section. These actually being something of a transition level taking you to the next area with a new terrain. Once back outside on the surface you'd be presented with either a snowy or desert terrain open map to explore, and one that is a little closer to the broken section, before progressing enough to go back underground. Upon emerging again you'd be back in a new biome of either snow or desert, and again a little loser to the broken section. Rinse and repeat to get back to the underground transition where you'd end up at the broken section for the final area and final boss fights. In this way it'd feel like you've explored more of the ring and not just been stuck on one section with a single biome with no variety.

The one thing I can say about the one continuous camera shot for Chief being the transition from third to first person being pretty seamless especially since other games in the past couple of years do that and just jankily have the camera clip through the back of a character's head. As for omitted weapons being added later, I doubt it to some extent just due to the "meta" of weapons in games I've been hearing about lately. For instance of the old shotgun was added and you had the option and it would turn into, "why waste my time with this one when the other is better?". A problem some, including speedrunners, have with the hidden "scorpion gun" because its so overpowered. When it comes to the open world being justified I don't agree. It just feels dead and empty at times, not to say there's nothing to do or nothing fun there, but most activities and collectables like you said are boring. I keep hearing people upset about that double Brute boss fight. I literally killed them fairly quick, never leaving the ghost I rode in on. The Blade master fight I also walked into with an Rpg and used the ammo pick ups to continuously refill on rockets. That with a combo of those motion tracker things made the fight underwhelming and no where near as intense and awesome as everyone else makes it out to be. That was my experience with it on my first playthrough though. Maybe I played both in a very uninteresting way but those options are there to trivialize them even if it's not the "right way". The only "value" I can see in Atriox not being around is if they do some sort of live-service type dlc or are for some reason saving him for a sequel
@elevatedmeance68073 жыл бұрын

It is just Halo CE with nice makeup and without the Flood, without any really interesting characters... Poor killed Spartans, their armour parts would have been a good storyline, but... Never happened. It is a game for people who like to shoot only. Atriox plus Cortana probably would have been a good evil pair, but this... Storyline... Is like a family series from the 90's. Nothing happens on screen, we are not part of it. As someone wrote... A Far Cry MC edition.

I don't actually like Halo 4 very much, but it does one thing that I really really like, and that is making Chief an actual character. One thing I've always disagreed with most of the community with is the idea that Chief needs to be this hollow shell for the player to inhabit. I genuinely loved what Halo 4 did with it's expanding on Chief and Cortana's relationship and I feel that their sort of semi romance is actually natural and compelling. Chief isn't a character in the original trilogy and I think that's to the series detriment. I enjoy where 343 have gone with his character, I just absolutely hated everything else they did. Luckily Infinite fixed a lot of the issues I had with the gameplay and art style. I see infinite as a disappointment, but it's the first time I felt like It was playing Halo since Reach. Infinite is a great base, they just need to make an actually good story with that base.

What's really funny to me is people actually bash halo 4 for not being diverse when in actuality if you compare it to 5 it's like comparing all the different sets of LoTR to the sets of the first Saw movie...... The Eshram death scene confused me as well. Great review. Very well put together. I do disagree with your praise over the story, I feel it is the worst aspect of the campaign and one of the worst in the series - there was so little to it. At least Halo 4 and 5 were bold and had a sense of urgency. Infinite was more an emotional story, which is so not Halo, and 343 lean too much into making the relationship between Chief and Cortana beyond one between soldiers and friends. I mean you could replace either The Weapon or Cortana in Infinite with an actual female and they would all behave in the same way - which doesn't make sense. They are A.I. after all, in that they have been designed, and a military A.I. shouldn't behave like an emotional human. The Weapon was oddly naive in her behaviour, for a military A.I. also. The emotional talks, flashbacks and images were too forced for me and too reoccurring I thought. The story beyond the emotional one between Chief and the A.I.s, was mostly empty. Escharum, who seemingly does absolutely nothing but talk in his room, is following Atriox, and Atriox hates humans because of Cortana. That's it. Not that having your planet blow-up is a small issue, but it must have taken 20 seconds to come up with that motivation for why the Banished are fighting the humans. One side did something bad to the other, so that side wants to do bad in return. After a while Escharum just felt like another alien sh*t talking the Chief, like thousands of others had before the Chief ended them. And the Harbinger was even less useful. The somewhat cryptic reveal at the start of campaign, of her being released, was wasted as she did nothing throughout the game just for the Chief to end her also. Going back to my point about urgency, all the other Halos had a crescendo to the end from the first mission. Infinite just didn't have that at all - if Chief napped for a few days, then nothing bad would have happened. Can't say that about the other Halos. Again it was more an emotional build to the end. I wonder if this is the downside of an open world Halo. A linear mission system can build tension and drama more easily I feel than an open world one, as there is no break between missions in a linear system where as in an open world one you can toddle off to complete a side mission or get a collectable, which breaks the drama and urgency the game story otherwise could have built. Think of pausing a movie every 20 mins to walk in your backyard. It may a be a very nice backyard, but it's breaking whatever drama the movie was building. We'll see what future plans 343 has and maybe the story I am criticising here might make more sense why it was designed the way it was. I was surprised with how much I agreed with you in the vid, so maybe there is something about the story I am missing.

@@LazerzZ I’m glad peeps are still a good bit positive bout Halo Infinite despite its flaws. I checked out some of the other “critiques” and I thought they were just too negative for my taste, so I’m glad this one ended on a more positive note of sorts.

I disagree with the sprint and slide takes. I still prefer multi-player without them. But I wish it was a little more substantial in campaign

Grew up with halo aswell. However halo 4 I hold in extremely high regard. infinite tho... The direct gameplay was great... Everything else was the worst ive ever seen. No setpiece story, openworld syndrome etc.

I would have rather them finish off the created storyline they started with 4 and 5 instead of this soft reboot crap that is the worst halo story out of the games

How can Infinte have the worst Halo story? It doesn't have one! But seriously, gameplay is fun, but a year after playing it, I can't even remember what the story is about.

Honestly I couldn’t disagree with you more. As someone who has played these game since the original Xbox release this is the laziest halo ever made. It’s all nostalgia and no substance. I am so disappointed with this game and honestly I don’t think 343 should make anymore games after this. Such a let down in atmosphere and story telling. I love the first two games and this game just feels like a barebones mess with decent combat.

Idk, Halo seems to be a pure nostalgia thing to me, played it on PC Gamepass, I don't get it at all, just feels floaty and was pretty bored. To be fair, it's the same with Doom Eternal, so not for me but glad people like it

Damn I'm seven months late and I saw when it was uploaded. I just never clicked on it for whatever reason. It is mind boggling how beoken and unfinished this game is. Even more so that 343 and/or Microsoft thought it was ok to launch a game devoid of any multiplayer content and a shallow campaign. I do not understand the praise the latter gets. Even graphically it looks worse than Halo 3 a game 14 years prior. What the hell happened with this game?

I agree soo much! I find the campaign bland and contrived in terms of visual quality and story. I honestly can't help but chuckle a bit at some of the bad writing too, like the escharum death scene. I have a lot I don't like about this game, I think it just tries a bit too hard to be a compelling experience.

The girl was soo dis-interested in the halo 4 reveal lmao. also, finally. Halo4 was never good. Halo 5 brought in non halo people that enjoyed the game. infinite tried both to copy reach and halo 5. no amount of content would have saved it for me. I hate it.

This aged poorly. Yes the campaign is pretty good but boy they dropped the ball yet again on multiplayer.

Some of the Halo Infinite music sounds like generic war film music and it bothers me more than it should. The tone is just wrong. They really should have got Marty O'donell to do it

@@ymck7246 I don't know who you're arguing with. I don't care about Halo 4 or 5. I don't care about halo at all, so why would you make it a point to give me permission to enjoy Halo 4 or Infinite? Your first paragraph is entirely comprised of argumentum ad populum. "Backed up by player numbers" (ad populum) "Impact on culture" (ad populum) "General support to this day" (ad populum) This way of thinking is scientifically proven to be stupid. My only point is that Halo was never that great. It was simply the first of its kind in the console market, and now it's obsolete; the original trilogy included.
