this isn't too hard to imagine, during the landing platform section of the Pillar of Autumn level, if you look down across the canyon you can see a massive ground war between what's left of the UNSC Army and the Covenant. There have had to been some UNSC personnel left to link up with Six with usage of IFF trackers. Or we could get another scenario: ALL UNSC personnel died fighting shortly after the Autumn fled from Reach, as throughout Lone Wolf, there are UNSC Army corpses everywhere, alongside Spartans; making Noble Six truly the last Spartan to die fighting on Reach.

Actually, there were survivors. Master Chief took a small detour to Reach after Halo CE and rescued the remains of his fireteam as well as a Relic or something like that. Its been like 5 years since I read the book
