Many bands fund their beginnings by exclusively doing covers; Dirty Loops, for example, is one of the most talented bands to ever exist as far as I can tell, and they solely did covers until they has established enough of a fanbase that they felt safe enough to transition to their originals. They lost a lot of attention after that, but it definitely set themselves up to do what they actually wanted to do.
