I was in the market for a new ECU. I'm in Sydney. I went with Holley only for the reason the Haltech was so expensive. This was just before the Rebel was released. Worst part was the way everything on the Haltech is an add-on which you need to buy. The cost just keeps adding up.
@BigRingStumpy6 ай бұрын
I purchased a Haltech and love it. Super configurable and expandable. They have offices in US East, US West, New Zealand, and UK, so there is always someone to pickup the phone. I have never once had to wait for a tech. I have emailed them before going to bed, and I have an answer waiting for me when I wake up in the morning.

The best part of HALTECH is the customer service, PERIOD. They’re leaps and bounds of ahead of everyone else (I always thought AEM was decent) as long as you were competent tuner. HALTECH will sit with you for hours if needed and log directly into your computer (with no secondary software as they have their own built into the box) just click help and code pops up and they have access to your ECU. Lastly, customer service is almost 24/7 (there is a 1-2 hour lapse when they’re closed) but besides that you can always get ahold of someone.

i've had the same experience. i had a guy call me BACK on his way home from work to troubleshoot a DBW issue i was having. guarantee Holley employees don't care that much about the customer.

I'd suggest a deep dive into it Joe. I may be a bit biased as we have been running the Nexus R5 on a car for some time now, along with Haltech being 5 min up the road, but I love it!! Wifi is awesome as I can download a log in less than the time it takes to fuel the car during a pit. Another feature I like (with nexus) unsure of rebel. Is that the laptop will power the ecu when connected. Reach out if you're interested 😉

it seems like its a decent system, curious how stripped down the rebel will be vs. the full blown stuff. there just isnt enough haltec stuff around me currently to justify going through the learning curve. if this ecu takes off and becomes popular it would make more sense, then just like terminator x into a dominator - im sure once you get familiar with the rebel you can hop into the other ecus pretty easily. haltec has some cool stuff it looks like

In Australia Haltech is everyone's go to and the people who aint using it are all slowly converting. Its easy to wire in and for the price it cant be touched. The heads up despays even have outputs if you have used all the ecu ones. All ecu accessories can be used between the hole range. tunability it has a lot going on but who wouldnt want more tunability. To be honest when i seen you apear with a Holley hat on and saying you do tuning classes for it i was a bit sceptical but its hard to be bias when holley cant compete haha hopefully soon we see you make the jump to Haltech as well 👌

glad you did a video on this. my original plan was to move from my sniper to a term x or HP, but after researching haltech's nexus line I'll most likely be going that route instead. maybe one day you'll branch into haltech a bit so i can get some training on it with the tune the trilogy course :)
@mxguy24386 ай бұрын
The haltech makes advanced tuning for traction control or maybe rev matching on downshift easy. Whereas Holley requires you to create wonky custom tables and think upside down to be able to pull off the stuff like this. All my friends are laughing at me for still sticking around with Holley while they've all switched to haltech
@joeyjojojr.shabadoo9156 ай бұрын
Many Years back, coming from the Import side of things, Haltech came out with the best product lineup at the time and were priced aggressive enough to end AEM's dominance in the space. Another thing about Haltech, is that they were born out of Boost. They were never known as the ECU you would buy for your N/A setup. They always had more features, better features and competitive pricing. If they are going after Holley, it will be interesting.

Thank you for the video, you did a really good job! Just a couple of points - if you don't like phone apps and wireless, the ECU comes with a USB interface so you can plug it straight into your laptop. Correct, Bosch 4.9 LSU sensor onboard. Yes you can add extra CAN widebands (including NTKs) if you want. The PC logs on the Haltech log all the channels, I think it's 1000 channels or something, but the rate is low over USB. The internal logging in the PC is when you need to select the channels you want but it does have recommended channels. The case is powdercoated diecast top and bottom. For the inputs and outputs, you're correct on the number of them. And yes you can run an I/O expander box or a PD16 if you need more I/O. Thank you!

Nice unbiased initial assessment. I'm running a Haltech right now for secondary fueling and PDM control. I think the simplicity of the Holley Term-X will be more than adequate for 80+% of the gear heads out there without having to deal with the complexity. If the ECM config locks down and simplifies the NSP software, that may change. Excited to see the LS ECU hit the market and seeing a more in-depth review. Keep up the great work.

@tunedbycam6 ай бұрын
The rebel does have a 4 channel PDM. 3 25Amp channels are preconfigured (injection/ignition, fuel pump, cooling fan, and has one 25Amp configurable channel. A nice thing with their dash, a future firmware release is going to allow bidirectional communication with the ecu and that dash design software will then be in the NSP software. The dash can then act as an expansion box as well. Also fairly certain their CAN keypads will work with it as well which is a nice touch but comes at a cost obviously. Like you said excited for there to be more competition which is never a bad thing for the end users.

I've never gotten through to Holley in less than 45 minutes. They have 2 offices in the USA and of course 1 in Australia. I've gotten help evenings and weekends and almost never had to wait on hold. All of their techs are Haltech ECU techs as opposed to someone brought in from a company Holley purchased, like Mr.Gasket. (Maybe that changed). It does have a PDM built in. I've used both Holley and Haltech software. Holley is easier but I don't consider Haltech to be difficult, it's rather user intuitive. Thanks for taking the time to make the video. Holley has a lot going for it, but as someone whos been installing these since day 1, They have too many harness issues, like entirely too many harness issues. It's almost to the point it's more often then not I have a harness issue. And now that were seeing a couple years on some of them I'm starting to see ECU Failures. Plus Holley is still lacking some basic stuff IE Flex fuel, no reason I should have to burn up all the advanced tables for flex fuel. They finally gave us open loop boost control which should have been a release day feature. The 6l80 feature is neat and I want to experiment with that. But I'm going to have a rebel on it's way as soon as I can order one to try out and if it works well which I'm guessing it will I'll be pushing customers that way. From what I understand the rebels will have a fairly large number of base files that should get most everyone up and running. I'm sure we'll see a slightly simpler firmware on the rebel.

I think it´s fair to assume that Haltech is gunning for the European market and Australian market as there is still a bunch of LS motors there and more experience with Haltech already than Holley, especially in Australia/New Zealand, despite Holley selling a bunch into those markets. I don´t think anyone at Haltech assumes they will dip deep into the sales of Holley in the US. Their strategies are also legacy long lasting and working for 25years+ strategies, there are very few faults or issues in the way they are designed as they have evolved extremely long and so overall the base FW and SW is very robust, so it´ll come out running with few issues. I don´t see personally much benefit in having a traction control curve to follow. The Haltech in it´s own right can be made to do the same through user tables etc if someone believes that is the best way to handle traction control for a drag car.
@Thehouseofboost6 ай бұрын
They are both great ecu’s. Haltech is great on manual boosted cars, gives you lots of options for flat shifting, anti lag, launch control etc. Holley is very dumbed down comparatively which is good for most people that are just looking for a upgrade from a stock ecu. I would take ether over a fuel tech any day.

I don't usually comment on anything but here goes; I think you're just a little reluctant to try a different platform, which is fair since Holley is well in the comfort zone. I've watched your vids for a long time and you've used other stuff and I'm surprised you still continue to choose Holley. I've use a wide range and the Holley stuff is just sub par compared to the competition, if nothing else all these other companies jumping on the LS PNP bandwagon will force them to innovate even a little. Haltech definitely targeting Terminator lol. Every new software suite is intimidating in the first 15 min, Holley was no exception for me. I jokingly refer to Haltech as the Holley of Australia (aussies looove it when I say that) as they like the word proprietary and their software is as simple and 'done for you' as it can be while serving a wider range of engines then just the LS. They do let you have access to more features, but you can hide the stuff you're not using which makes it look less intimidating. They also let you have your own defined tables, inputs etc AND virtual switches etc. There are error messages that guide you along setting something up, and its all pretty spelt out directly in the software. There are still some things they just wont let you touch. And yeah lol Haltech has their own jargon compared to many other brands. IMO Holley's software looks like the CD-Rom games I got out of a cereal box as a kid. I hear what you're saying regarding tech support and company size, but end of the day it really doesn't matter to the customer. My usual hold time with Holley is 45 min and I get some dude reading a script who has 20 other calls to get to. Haltech has tech support basically 24/7 between all their locations and I've never felt rushed talking with them and especially AUS knows the product inside and out. Holley always has to "ask my manager". Haltech already uses Wifi on the Nexus ECU's, I'd imagine its refined connection wise at this point. Secondary box for transmission sounds like Haltech LOL, but agree its probably better for later changes Yes its a PDM with 4 outputs for Fuel pump, Fan, Injectors, Ignition coils etc. I like this so much better then what Holley does Pre crimped cables with a twist lock style battery terminal like in Car audio probably a good idea. They notably skipped the RadSok connectors that the Nexus' have.. There's some great training stuff for Holley and much tribal knowledge, but I'd caution that with an equal amount of bad info out there too. When the info comes from the manufacturer it can be assumed that its good. Haltech has excellent youtube videos and articles/walkthroughs/FAQ's on their site, which I can't say for Holley. Updating a Terminator is one of the most ridiculous processes. I can't believe that hasn't been addressed yet. I wouldn't judge the pre-production harnesses too harshly, especially if you're going to compare to the ugly junk Holley gives us. Their build quality has really gotten worse lately. Off the shelf harnesses are always a compromise in fitment. Haltech have put firewall boots in for years, with a un shrunk piece of glue heat shrink for after you've installed it, great idea. I've used Smartwires, was great tech like 12 years ago but not even relevant to talk about now in price or features. Oscilloscope function such a save for diagnostics. Worth adding that feature just for tech support's sake I love that you skipped addressing Flex Fuel, as that is a very sore point again Holley... Not 100% sure on this, but I think you can have your layout templates on your laptop stay from car to car. Or just load your template every time you plug into a new car and you'll know where everything and have it where you like it. At the moment I don't love the Haltech logger, my local tuner does but he has more time on it then I do. The Holley one always looks like a mess to me though. If you made is this far, hats off to you. I am thrilled there's going to be a price competitive alternative to Holley, I'm probably biased the other way and if given the option would take the Haltech any day of the week based on my current experiences with both. Love your videos, looking forward to more. Haltech should just send you a Rebel lol.
@hotroddude65515 ай бұрын
Love your vids Joe. But after PRI, I'm going with a Haltech Elite 2500. Granted the new Rebel is to compete with the lowly Terminator. But Haltech is proven and Holley is a 50/50 chance it'll work out of the box. Been here, done that with a bad Term X right out of the box. Plus the harness grounds were bad splices.

dont hold your breath haha. im 99% sure the reason they don't do it is they cant handle the amount of tech support phone calls they will get from people trying to figure it out. dome pressure based control is significantly easier to work with. people have been asking for it for years, you think they would just do it so they dont have to listen to people complain about it anymore haha
@v8tergt6536 ай бұрын
@@JoeSimpsonAtTempestWhy would dome pressure be easier? Since now you need to try and see what pressure gets you what boost and than its not lineal vs actual boost when you increase dome pressure . So being able to use Map sensor as boost input for boost control would make it easier ?

Produce an ECU that does transmission control and DBW in one box then MAYBE another company will take some of the market back from Holley. Add a couple of I/O while you're at it. Engine control only, those are everywhere, no thanks. Also, separate box to run the transmission, that reminds me of the FAST XFI days, not going back there either.

That's funny he thinks Holley coined the phrase " set up wizard." That phrase shows up in almost every software application I've opened up over the last ten years. Cars and CNC electronics included. 😂😂😂

Nothing that I would want. If someone wanted to use it I would say you'd have to have it dynotuned then take a course to tune urself. Where holley you can probably get a mailed tune then play with things @ ur own pace but who knows I could be completely wrong. People just need to order they're harness from Devin vanderhoof so they get a good harness for holley from the get go

Worth noting that Link ECU just came out with a standalone LS harness that looks very tidy. They say it's compatible with their StormX or XtremeX ECU to Gen 3 LS1/LS6 or Gen 4 LS2/LS3/LS7. Link ECU is very similar to Haltech except New Zealand based, a bit more affordable for comparable features generally, and with a slightly different product range with more focus on plug n play options. They also have fantastic customer service and the help files build into the tuning software can basically explain every single thing you click on. It's been a great experience for me so far, though I'm not an extremely experienced tuner. I do find the PC Link software more intuitive and navigable than most of the other tuning software I've played with. Link also offers an affordable PDM option which is integrated via CAN bus and you can link multiple together. They are getting more popular in the USA lately and have been big in Formula Drift for several years now.

haha I paused the video at that comment and came to comments looking for this, I have an HP ECU since V1 (2010ish) and it's been flawless for my needs, and I have used the System Log to confirm odd issues with crank/cam sensor signals for my dual sync (gen1), but I'd agree it's not the same as what I understand Haltech's 4 ch built in scope to be. The built in current monitoring on the outputs is cool feature over the Holley need for wiring up inductive probes as inputs, and I also like how the Haltech let's you print a nice I/O map/diagram on paper for documentation and posterity...great video as always @JoeSimpsonAtTempest thanks for the sharing!

From a guy thats used both let me just say, haltech software looks better and operates much better, faster, and easier than holley. Also haltech ecu's dont brick and wipe all the info every time you try to mess with it unlike my terminator x. Haltech ftw, about to sell my term x that just bricked itself AGAIN for the haltech unit

From the hardware standpoint you can not compare terminator X with a haltech rebel even with the holley hp from software way the only thing holley is good at base maps for LS and o2 control PID you can literally make it run it's self that's why most of people choose holley in there, junkyard builds. price ways, tech-support quality I will not go into these details. I actually had to stop less than 6 minutes in, Holley is a good system, but its so god damn simple that its annoying as hell. Holley is bigger which is easy to understand considering the range of crap holley do. Haltech is just ECU/VCU which they offer a much more flexible system and there tech support is second to none, As an aussie that has had to deal with Holley tech support and tuned Both Haltech and Holley on a regular basis over the last 15 years, I suggest you actually try the system and learn what its capable of before you make judgement of it.

Holley has been lying to its customers since day one. Talking about how the terminator x or any of there units is a plug and play unit. Also, saying how the ecu is smart enough to fix the problem for you after plugging it in and letting the car warm up. Which is a HUGE false statement. I use holley and regret every bit of buying one. The amount of people I've talked to and seen on Facebook complaining about holley, holley should have a lawsuit on their hands right now for selling sht products that are falsely advertised. This is what happens when you fall flat on your ass with products only to favor there car events more.

haha, what? Holley has never paid me a penny and I even said in this video they canceled my dealer account.
