I love your advice to not keep your radio on a shelf and think you can use it on a bad day. I've had my baofeng BF-F8 sitting in my gun safe for several years because of your channel I am now actively going to program it with the cable you recommended, I bought a second radio and a signal stick antenna and also for my older radio I purchased a Nagoya 771 antenna thanks for the great content, you have opened up a whole new world for me. BTW these baofeng radios are a "pregnant purchase" because it just whets your appetite for something better...

@Ham Radio Crash Course - would love it if you could put the sites you cite (ie Repeater Book, Radio Reference, et al) in the video description for reference... just to tidy up for those of us who are trying to follow with such references. Thanks for a great video!
@petertyrrell6690

Great video. The DTMF tones are transmitted (when enabled) when you press the keys on the radio. DTMF tones are used to dial a number when a repeater is set up with an autopatch. An autopatch allows a repeater to make a telephone call. You had better be licensed to use a repeater. Fun fact. If you momentarily press the * key, the displayed frequency will change to the transmit offset frequency. For repeater use there is, as was stated, a transmit and receive frequency. So when programing repeater frequencies into a channel, you program the receive frequency first, press exit, hit * to show the transmit frequency, then menu and then down to channel (Make sure you on the right channel), menu again and the transmit frequency is stored. Press Exit then press * again to go back to the normal receive frequency. This saves having to type in two frequencies. I know, use Chirp, but I am lazy to make a cable.

I strongly recommend to put the alarm mode to SITE. If you accidentally hit the alarm, it will only flash the LED and send out an oscillating tone through the speaker. Otherwise, it will transmit the tone whatever frequency (or frequency pair) that is currently set for CHANNEL A.

"Gardening With Vincenzo" here...Just purchased (2) of the Baofeng UV 5R A units and although I am just beginning to assimilate a wide variety of information including the steps necessary to obtain a Ham License, I was thrilled to "listen & See" the info presented specifically "How To" program the units and understand the "Why/Wherefores" of the default settings ! I had hoped that the manual would have covered that to some extent but did not ! Thanks for taking the time to post the information as although some folks say "Knowledge is Power:"...I Believe that its "True Value" lies in the sharing ! I also subscribed to the channel and will utilize your videos as an information resource... Keep Them coming Please...Thanks Again !

Down here it's also a federal crime to Broadcast without a license. If I had view this first part video It could be far more easy to start that it was for me. Great contribution !!! You are awesome at this! Thanks for the Baofeng "primer". I know I will be watching this again when I receive my BF-F9 V2+. Now if I could find a video on basic ham frequencies and tones and how all of that works together. I will be using my radio for listening for a while. The soonest I could be tested for a tech license here isn't until January so I have plenty of time to study and learn. We only have one repeater in my area that I know of and it is 15 miles away. I hope that with a better antenna that I will be able to use it. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.

If you lightly press the # key on the key pad, you can go between high and low power. Some uv5r's also have a medium power setting using that method. But if you press and hold that # key, it locks and unlocks the keypad.

The on/off knob is also a tool to tighten the antenna nut. It pulls off and fits over the antenna lug and fits in the slots so you can hand tighten. Not all uv5’s have dual receivers.

Got my radio today and getting along well with it, thanks to your great video. I was able to manually program to have coms with my GMSR sets as well as with the marine VHF in my boat. Basically, I bought it just for that. I don't mess with HAM or any other licensed frequencies. ONE THING I'd like to add to your review: - TX high / low can be easily be switched by a quick push of the "lock" button, in the lower right of the key pad. You will see a tiny "L" on the screen.

Todd W The UV5R is cheaper than most decent walkie talkies and much more powerful. it's the most popular comms in airport in Ireland.

Just be careful out there, its illegal to transmit with these without a license. Please use an obscure frequency to reduce interference.

Ok. This video got me off my duff. Will be ordering by the weekend and taking technician test soon. Best advice for me was to print out the translated manual.

I have had two UV5R radios for a couple of years. They were programmed by my friend at the radio club. I was messing with one of them and screwed up the frequency list so this is the first time I have had to fix it myself. Thanks for doing this video so I COULD do it myself. Also the Miklor manual is much better than the factory one. I will be trying Chirp soon but your video got me started. Thank you. Dave K8WPE since 1960.

@@chrissewell1608 No shit! He said "radios aren't like guns where you can just pick one up and defend yourself" lmao. What is KA-PLUNK! the sound my friends bullets make hitting the ground when we are shooting at hogs.

I'm a big gun guy and I have to agree with his comment. Yes becoming proficient in weapons takes time but I can get people to the basics in a day. The basics in ham will not be acquired in a day. So many variables by comparison. I guess that's why we are to learn. So teach on professor!

Great information! I have wanted to get into HAM for a long time. I saw these radios for cheap and there are people who suggest them for a low cost way to get into HAM. I also do some prepping and knew these would be useful. My wife is also on the road quite a bit making grandkid runs. I used to have a beautiful FM business band radio system with a 85 foot break-over antenna pole, with the antenna it hit 97 feet so I didn't have to put lights on it. It was a duplex system with my own repeater, and I had a phone patch because this was in the time before cell phones. I drove a school bus at the time and the phone was very handy. I could get out 90 miles from the antenna and communicate home. Yes, Kansas is pretty flat. When I was forced to leave farming because I became disabled I sold my 30 grand setup for a pittance. I almost no saled it, but I had no real need for it since cell phones were finally small enough and cheap enough and had enough coverage that they were finally worthwhile. And that was the concession my wife made so I would sell my radio system. Anyway, HAM should be fun. One question, though, will my wife also have to be licensed or will mine suffice? Anyway, I'm glad I happened on to your videos. Thanks.

DTMFST is a setup for the old autopatch. You need the DTMF tones from the keypad to broadcast to the autopatch so that the telephone service recognizes what numbers you are pressing.
