Hello. I’m a complete noob when it comes to H.A.M. Radios. I’ve recently been concerned with the events of the world and got into prepping. Now that I have most of my basis covered I need communication for not only prepping but entertainment. I’m very technically savy I just need a good teacher. I bought two Baofeng radios and as I do more research I hear 50/50 good things about it. Equally bad things. I’m not afraid to spend some cash as I know I want a “good” set up but I feel like I’m getting ahead of myself. I need to understand what is a ham radio and how it works. What I can do with it and what others do with it. I want a home set up and a portable set up. No matter what I search every video starts with assumptions I know more than I do. I need complete dumbed down to the bare bones intro. To H.A.M. Radios. Can you do such a video or recommend one. I want to go about this the legit way and the wink wink way. Just for a post apocalyptic scenario. Any suggestions on what to buy. I figure 800-1000$ for everything is my budget. As previously stated I already own two baofengs and their respective uhf/vhf extended antennas and extended batteries for each. I also bought the data cable everyone says to use. I downloaded things but I have no idea how to use or what they do. The extent of what I’ve done so far is I’ve heard some ems and noaa radio transmissions. That’s it. I enjoy your videos. Thanks in advance.

For channels getting stuck on "000" I found that adding anything into Channel 1, deleting Channel 0, then readding to channel 0 allows it to save. Hope this helps someone who found that to be frustrating -- Also with all the new BaoFeng radios they come with a lock on them. To remove it you have to power off the radio, hold PTT, VFO, and Monitor at the same time, power on, and it removes it. That was a frustrating 6 hours of research I don't wish upon my worst enemies.
@RoamFree18669 ай бұрын
Thank you for sharing these tips. Regarding the "000", at the 24m 15s mark, I don't think it's a bug. It looks like, after assigning a channel, you have to delete it first before you can re-assign it, and channels 0 and 127 are assigned by default at RESET ALL, so they have to be cleared first if you want to set them to something different. Also, while navigating the channels for assignment, the CH- prefix indicates that a channel is assigned.

Congratulations on your license. I hope you are just as excited now as you were ten months ago. Please consider a rugged radio with incredible battery life designated the Baofeng AR-152. I virtually wrote an online review of it in a post I made here. I would have made a video of it; but, I own no video equipment. I may one day get my amateur radio license. So far, I am just a technical hobbyist. I can repair, modify, configure, build, and setup equipment and stations for others, but can not transmit. The true entry radio hobbyist is the unlicensed technician that repairs the equipment, and configures everything, but has no license and can not transmit.

Also also: The DTMF (Dual tone multi frequency ) menu setting is synonymous to the tones you hear on a touch-tone telephone. In HAM radio it is generally used to control things remotely like the functions of a repeater or sending codes to other radios. - While holding the PTT you can press the numbers keys to generate the tones sent over the air.

Approaching the same thing from the other end of the age spectrum, I'm sitting here thinking, "Ah yes. This horrible electronic pulsing squeal is comfortingly familiar. It's like I'm 18 again." 😅 Not to do the old-person fairy tale thing, but once upon a time... To connect a computer to a network, you'd use the handset from a landline phone, placed into an acoustic "cradle" that would direct this kind of sound from the phone headset's speaker into the computer mic in the cradle and from the computer speaker in the cradle to the mic in the phone. And before that, we used to store things using this kind of sound recorded on audio cassette tapes. We'd connect the computer's sound output jack to the mic jack of a cassette recorder and the computer's sound input jack to the cassette recorder's headphone jack. Going from binary (digital) data to audio (analog) is "modulation" and the other way around is "demodulation". So you had to MOdulate/DEModulate the signal... and now you know why we still talk about connecting to networks via a modem. Everything old is new again, and it's just as delightful the next time around.

Josh, I am just now watching this video, 12-26-2021 and about at 25:00 you tried to program in a simplex frequency of 146.520 on channel 000 but it would not take but you could get it to go into channel 001. The reason is because it was already programed in with a different frequency. In that case one must DELETE that channel (which will also delete the frequency on that channel) FIRST. After it is deleted, THEN one can go back in and put the desired frequency (in your case, 146.520) and show as channel CH000. Thus if a frequency is already programed into a channel and you want a different frequence for that channel one must DELETE the channel (I think is menu item 28) FIRST, then go back and enter the desire frequency and that channel you wanted (which is the channel just deleted). I apologize if this has already been stated but I didn't want to read through all the comments to see. I guess it doesn't hurt to repeat a solution. KEEP. up the awesome work, your videos are very educational and entertaining. 73, from a fellow ham.

Great vid, as a Motor Club we use about 20 UV5R radios for marshals and club usage. Great feature is dual watch where on the club channel we can monitor the safety channel used by the marshals, but any club talk isn't bleeding across their frequency as marshals don't have dual watch enabled. Apologies if this is a NOOB question, but I didn't see it mentioned/covered during the stream. When programming FRS and GMRS channels for P2P comms, is there a specific channel assignment you recommend? FRS radios you purchase at a local sporting goods store are typically programmed on Channels 1-7 and GMRS can share channels 1-7 as well, but have their own specific channels of 15-22 I believe. When using the CHIRP software to program, wouldn't it make sense to align these channels in a similar manner, or is there something I'm missing/not understanding? I honestly have very little experience and understanding when it comes to the Baofeng. When I was reviewing the stream, as you were importing various channels you started at 0/1 and began with repeaters. Why do you program it in that order with those first? I noticed you mentioned the FRS/GMRS import but didn't actually do it and mentioned it was "illegal"? Again, I'm sorry if this sounds stupid, but how would I be communicating from one Baofeng to another separate Baofeng device without actually using FRS/GMRS channels?

Very comprehensive video. I think it achieves its goal of explaining these small, inexpensive HTs. As for easy….well, yes, and there is much that has happened over the years to make ham radio “easier,” although I have my doubts that setting the bar lower is always desirable. This is not a plea for a return to a CW test, or the vacuum tube Drakes that I started out with. As with other activities and areas of interest, it is unquestionable that the coming of the Internet, in particular, was going to mean “adapt or die” for the pastime. Nevertheless, there was something to be said for the level of commitment required to get into ham radio in the 1970’s. It encouraged a broader approach to learning the technology, the procedural scope of operating, and the social aspects of this hobby. There is no doubt that having to drive to Chicago at the point where I wanted to test for my license was inconvenient, but it encouraged a level of preparation such that I was able to pass the 13 WPM / General exam at that time, and later move on to Advanced and Extra, after the easier local test sessions were available. Then there is Field Day, and Hamventions, storm spotting, and the other aspects that make ham radio so interesting. Are all those things encouraged by “easy?” I frankly don’t know.

My man has taken free practice ham exams on line hundreds of times, and failed every last one. When he started to hear about satellite stuff on the practice exam, he questioned. What the hell does a satellite have to do with using a ham radio? He said I can understand knowing about a repeater, but what does knowing about a satellite have to do with anything? He said that only a cable or TV station should know about satellites in space, not to get a ham license to use a radio. He has some issues when it comes to learning all of the technical mumbo jumbo, just to get his ham license. He feels like its a waist of time, and its way too hard for him to learn all of the new stuff that's on a license now days. All of this stuff to learn on the exam is not as easy as one might think, well at least not for him anyway. Sadly I have to say but, I agree with him on this one. He will just stick with his GMRS radio license he currently has now, where its the essayist for him to own. He obeys all of the same radio rulls that you hams have to obey, but without all of the learning. Besides even if he did pass the exam by some chance, he cannot for the life of him build any working transceivers like you all can. He is no good in the RF field. He wanted to build his own tracking transmitter for his robot, and the whole thing is unstable with frequency shifting all over the FM dial. He tried to get it stable, but no such luck. So he gave up in the RF circuit biz, and sticking with IR, and fiberoptics. Everyone seams to be 100% smarter in this stuff then my man. And that's the reason why he has given up in all of this. GMRS radio is his best option for him to use, and no other. You keep your ham, and he will keep his GMRS. WRFU222

Would the repeater need to be within the 1 to 10 mile range for the ham to use it? I would imagine, but I'm learning here, lol. How far can the repeater than take the signals out? 3rd question... if I had a station that could reach idk let's say 300 miles or more. If a the other receiving radio happens to be a ham handheld Baofeng witha repeater, can they than chat? It sounds like Baofeng to Baofeng, you cannot get that crazy far. I'm wondering if it's station or mobile rig to Baofeng handheld, if it could. Obviously, with correct frequency and other variables.
@HamRadioCrashCourse Жыл бұрын
Range is generally limited to antenna and power output. A baofeng can likely reach it up to ten miles based on the repeaters height. You can reach 300 miles in almost all instances with baofeng radios or vhf/uhf. You’d need to go hf for that to work.

If radio goes into the scan mode the display " CT " will start blinking and will stay in this mode for the time out time unless it starts receiving and you can see the tone freq scanning then it is locked in this mode until it stops receiving. When it finds the tone it stops scanning and locks the tone.

I’m new to Ham Radios, just bought (2) UV-5R units and i gotta admit sending the picture from tablet to cellphone while using the radio signals was amazing! Im beginning to become a bit of a prepper and this video will help me with some of the basics. Thanks.

Why did you use a Baufang instead a Betech
@HamRadioCrashCourse Жыл бұрын
Baofeng UV-5R has been around for a long time and is cheap and easy to return if there are issues to Amazon. It is still my favorite when looking at UV-5R type radios.

Hi, thank you for taking the time to explain everything. I have a question. When introducing the repeater data manually and storing it into memory, does it store the offset, transmit tone etc? Or is that a general setting and do I have to be constantly readjusting it when switching from one repeater to another? Thank you!
@HamRadioCrashCourse2 жыл бұрын
Yes. When you save to memory, it saves it all.

so when you are talking about the walkie talkie freqs or simplex freqs, are those legal to transmit on if you dont have a hamm license??.

Call button enables FM radio if you have the FM enabled model which enables you to "get down to the funky beat"
@ejrz6553 Жыл бұрын
If you are doing this as of March 2023 you have to use CHIRP-legacy (If using the Baofeng UV5R) The import from data source is missing in CHIRP-next.
@rdenham720Ай бұрын
I noticed that too. But it looks like you can basically do the same thing, by going to Radio > Query Source > Repeater Book. Build your query which can include bands, add a filter for your city or county, It will open in a new tab. Then you select all of the rows you want to upload by using Shift + L Click > Copy, then go back to the main .img tab (your current radio), and Right click + Paste. Then upload to radio. It worked the same for me.

Regarding your problem saving a memory, you can’t just overwrite a channel on the feng. You have to delete the channel first if one already exists. In your case there was a Channel 000 already.

South Colorado Springs here. Anyone want to set a Frequency for emergencies and holler-boy duties like cleaning up areas or scaring junkies out of the wildlife areas, so wildlife can move back in, and then one for ranting about government corruption/over-reach?

None of this is a hobby and not a singular person using this tech is an amateur. Shhh.... if I caught up there will be others. Edit: if you are a real computer nerd then buy this radio with an SDR - hey I'm 25 years late but like that doesn't matter. Best $150 bucks you'll ever spend. Cheaper than an electric guitar.
@HamRadioCrashCourse2 жыл бұрын
Sounds like your taking a hard line with the language. Amateur == unpaid. Hobby == something we do in our free time often not related to public service. Or in the service of others.
@withershin2 жыл бұрын
@@HamRadioCrashCourse nope. I can code in multiple languages on a computer. So could you. Languages are just syntax. The outcome is all that matters to humans. My wish would be to adjust your line in the sand.

All over Google, mainly the FCC regulations you will need to read. Look them up, study and take the exam. Good luck

I got one of these just for emergencies broadcasts I can listen to. I'm not going to, but can I use it as a walkie talkie without a licence? How about if my family needs help in an emergency can I talk into it then?
@HamRadioCrashCourse2 жыл бұрын
You can’t legally transmit without a license since it’s a ham radio. Emergencies, all bets are off, but that’s not really applicable.

If any Boafeng's cannot meet the FCC spurious noise requirements, they should be recalled. There is no reason why they should be given a pass.

I’m getting error message saying radio did not respond when trying to “download from radio” - I have the 20$ cord and it blinks a few times when it says cloning. Was tedious to get around the lock to download the software to start with since I’m on a Mac :(
@HamRadioCrashCourse2 жыл бұрын
Make sure radio is on and push the connector into radio very hard. I think you have the right port selected on the mac but double check that too.

Dear Friend... Can I "cross band" with this radio ?? By other words .. Put in a high hill two repeaters beeing one VHF and another UHF ... Then put the handheld in a "transmit mode in VHF" and "receive mode in UHF" ... Then I get the two handhelds radios somewhere in the range of the repeaters ... Can we "cross band "handheld to handheld via the repeator" ??

Question: I have a UV-S9Plus, When I use CHIRP first issue is that radio is NOT in the drop down list. Second, when I go to the download from radio, I choose the right com choose Baofeng, and have chosen the 9R and the 9R Pro I get a message that the radios driver is "experimental" and the driver is a beta version do I want to proceed. I choose yes the cloning bar comes up, does not move then I get a message that says "error has occurred, Error reading data from radio: not the amount of data we want." What is the issue or the fix for this?
