Many years ago I learned that you do not tighten any screw down until you have them all started! I was working on an HP 2117F (I think) that had around 18 screws holding the cover on, after putting in about half of the screws no other screw holes would line up! Had to loosen all the screws I had tightened in order to put the other screws in!

Added the Inrad 400Hz CW filter and 4 KHz roofing filter mods into my TS-930S when I got back into the hobby 10 years ago, and was not disappointed one bit. What a difference!

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I bought a Kenwood TS-44S/AT and since I didn't know what I was looking at, I didn't realize it had the Automatic Tuner installed. I was expecting something on the other side for some reason. I've been trying to tune an antenna for a few days now. And when I saw your video, where you pointed out your Automatic Tuner, I tried it and it works!!!! I only wish I had seen your video before I bought an external tuner (that I couldn't get to work) and pieces to make a new antenna.

Kevin, Thanks for the video. Sorry to say that about 17:20 it looks like a solder ball is either bonded itself to the conformal coating or now running around inside somewhere. The first thing I saw and thought was solder was / now believe could be flux splatter but after that fairly certain solder drop hit the ground plane. Once again I hope it melted itself into the conformal coating and stays there. You are doing a great job and I am glad I do not have many eyeballs watching my work. ;

you are right about the narrow cw filter being at 250 hz. it was good to see how it is done.

I'm sure you know this, but if you put a small magnet on the side of the screwdriver then it will magnetized the screws and you'll have less chance of them falling into the radio.

Do you have a video changing the memory battery on this radio. I now have my dad's TS-440S/AT. Great video here. The CW filter is already installed.

Hi Kevin, Nice video. Did a similar install on my FT901DM about 25 years ago. I also see it was mentioned about the solder blobs (one large and one small) and your reply. 73 WB3BJU

Yeah. I'm actually thinking about filming work more regularly. The camera angle saw that blob, but it was out of my view line. It's a bit OCD, but a heck of a way to check your work.

Is that other slot for an additional SSB filter? To narrow it even further. I just purchased this same radio at a ham fest and love it.

Yes, there's a 1.8 khz optional filter for SSB.

Could the wider cw filter go in there at the San location, vice the San filter... to have to CW filters instead? Just curious thanks!

I have been meaning to do this for a while although i will go with the 500 hz filter.I recently picked up a SM-220 station monitor, and have been using it to view my transmitted wave form , but i am going to Tap the 8.83 mhz if which is located on the top of the board and easily soldered to so i can run some caps through Rg-174 coax to a BNC and plug in the Pan-adapter and see received waveforms.probably do the filter install at that time73'Jim KB1PFL

What a great job! Wish I could find a similar one on installing the IC-10 and VS1 modules in the Kenwood TS-440SAT.... Most importantly, before tearing it apart I wanted to figure out the easy way to check and see if the capability is already there. It’s pretty obvious for the voice module PS1. You push the button and if it doesn’t say anything you need the module :-). Period. And it goes in below the PCB you lifted for this filter installation :-) I don’t know if there’s an easy way to check whether or not an ICD 10 is installed without opening it up, and it seems like a lot more to getting at this little module. Period. Have you dealt with either of these before for your 440? I do love the radio! Paul de NT3L

Great video. If you were going to give advise to a young person (e.g. teenagers lilke my grand children) who may be interested in electrontics repair as a career, what would you recommend as an academic path to take.
@loughkb7 жыл бұрын
My high school had vocational classes, including vocational electronics. Take those classes. Beyond high school, seek out a tech school or college that has courses for E.E.T. (Electronics Engineering Technology). Experiment at home on old junk, learn to fix some of it. Parents can provide kits and tools to encourage them.

Very good video, I just bought a T-SHIRT-440 and will be adding the optional filters in the future. One question.......what power setting do you use on your soldering iron, or should I say temperature? I am not an electronics tech and would not want to fry my board by putting too much heat or wattage to the board during soldering.

I suppose I'll have to eventually. Maybe, if I have a good month coming up, I'll pick up the two chip computer interface upgrade. Since I'd have to take the front apart for that anyway, I could do the battery at the same time. Get two upgrades in the same vid.

I just wish you guys would heat the joint before sticking the solder to it. anybody can melt solder on a hot iron, but you need to melt it on the joint. just begging for cold solder joints otherwise. on the other hand, the inexperienced can mess up the board if they heat it too much. Ive seen more than my share of that. I'm sorry Kevin, its just a pet peeve of mine and I mean no disrespect. your joints looked good even though slightly rushed. I enjoy your videos the most. thanks for your time in instructional and informative works....
@loughkb7 жыл бұрын
Well, I do actually. I touch the iron tip to the joint and then touch the tip with the solder to transfer heat. After about half a second, I add some more solder and watch for it to flow around the wire and pad completely before lifting the iron. That flow around the wire and pad indicates that they were heated to the point where the solder took to both. It just happens fast enough to be missed if you're not looking for it. Thanks for watching!
