Cool !!! Another hint : when you're handling power kites and you want some extra protection (and sometimes extra control during the handling of the kite), always wear some decent quality gloves ! Your hands will thank you, eventually.

I really need to get around to doing this with my TRX-1 portable for my simplex SIGINT missions. My Prism Bora 7 will easily lift it I just need to cobble together a compact protective box for it and additional antenna to better fit the occasion.

Radios are cool but antennas are what really do the work!

Very cool and great explanation. Now I want a kite. And a beach too.

So sorry you didn't get the audio for the activation! Great job showing how you can use a kite with an efhw. I had long wondered about that. We have some friends that have boats. We've talked about doing an activation from about. I was thinking we could go pretty slow and use a kite. After seeing you use the grounding, I'm wondering if that might be unwise 😂

This should be a POTA/SOTA award... I've activated POTA with a Kite and Balloon antenna on SSB phone. SOTA Summits are a little more tricky.

Great video. I have often thought of doing this on the beach, but never knew how to connect everything. Will try it this spring.

I used to run a Zepp kite antenna, effectively an end fed half wave driven by a quarter wave of twin feed (or odd number of quarter waves. This allowed full legal power to be run and for the entire antenna to be well above the ground. Even with just a few watts the kite antenna is awesome and easily the most cost effective (effciency per $) of any antenna (its also great fun too) - Graham G6LFT

Mike this is SO AWESOME. I just place an online order for the Power Sled 14. I can attach this kite to the frame of my bike, Can't wait for spring like weather to give it a test. Thanks for posting this video.

That is so AWESOME! it is so fun and it really gets your signal out there. Also, who doesn't love flying a kite?!? I feel like I just fed your addiction....😂😂😂

Jim, I fly a sled and hang an EFHW off of it. It is an absolute blast to make QSO’s from it and people are always pleased to hear it’s from a kite! Enjoy!

@@AccelHeight Thanks Scott, I've got to try this. From a practical standpoint this should work well for my Ham On a Bike operation. Wow, I learned something new about this hobby and the equipment people use every month.

Ha! Love it man! Would definitely try a longer wire antenna. Maybe 256ft efhw with the kx2. Would be awesome to pota on 160m. Can’t believe it lost the activation!! That’s the best part. Tnx fer the parks btw. 73 w4zxt

This is a great video Mike! I am thinking of doing this somewhere here in Michigan using my WW2 Gibson Girl M357A box kite, manufactured in 1941! My dad bought this kite for my brother and I from a local Army surplus store years ago for very little money, as I recall. It folds like an umbrella and fits into the heavily waxed cardboard tube which has keep it in great condition for all of these years, about 80 now. This video gives me the answers of just how I would do this saving me a lot of hassle. I also have the FT-817ND and it is perfect for this. How cool would a "kite to Kite" antenna QSO be? 73, de Karl/KO8S

Can you post your specs and equipment used for your end-fed half-wave antenna, maybe with product links?
@Arndt_DC7OT Жыл бұрын
Wouldn't it be better if the transmission wire ran vertically down from the mounting loop? That is, when you sit exactly below the mounting loop. Such an oblique end-fed antenna has worse radiation characteristics than one that is vertical, doesn't it? And what about static charge, are there no problems there?

question if i may..im not saying youre wrong,im saying its new and ive never done this. i have heard about kite antennas and everytime they used a spark gap to discharge the wire waving around in the magnetic field causeing current flow to gnd. do i need a earth spark gap with your 49:1 video ant please. OR how do you manage it. you showed earth wire from gnd stake to chassis of 817.is that it or is there more caution please
@Realmikeguyver3 ай бұрын
Because the entire antenna is DC coupled, grounding your radio will ground the entire antenna system.

I never looked close but it does have some framework inside but not a lot.
