I'm in Australia, and working on getting my foundation license. On top of the costs, there is the issue of the accessibility of the practical exam as well. I've done the study, and can pass the practice exams no worries, but need some hands on experience to prepare for the practical exam, which Covid has made very hard to access. I'm now booked in to sit for my US technician license, and then try and get that transferred over, to then start the ACMA waiting game. (Also strange that it was easier to find a ready to go session for the US exam, in Australia than it was to go through the correct channels locally)

"Stralia Maaate. Taking it in the ass since 1770. We get ripped off for near everything now. Australian produced products are cheaper overseas than they are in Oz, how does that work? No surprises that when people 'make it' they move to the UK or US.

I had a look on the website & decided I wasn't interested enough to follow through obtaining my ham licence here in Australia. I'm not paying these fees & doing all this study & still have these restrictions. I also don't know any prepper who'd want their address publicly published because they have a ham licence.
@CWB-RF3 жыл бұрын
That's quite a bit of fees in Australia! While I think the cost of fees plays some small part for the number of Ham Radio operators in a country, I think culture or region plays a bigger part. Japan has the most Operators of any country and it's not an easy process nor is it free, at least not up front. I believe they even need a separate license or certification for the station equipment itself i.e. transceiver and antenna and that has a fee attached to it and to be renewed every 5 years.

A key difference between the US and Australian assessments is that the Australian Maritime College does not publish the licence assessment questions or even allow the volunteer examiners to look at the contents of the current exam papers. Old exam papers are available for study but they don't necessarily line up with the current question set. Y

This is a great series idea, and Australia fascinating start to it. I've heard hams in other countries really need to jump through hoops to be able to share in this hobby. Do Australians have the same EMCOMM / volunteer public service drive that our major ham orgs and agreements push in the U.S.?
@AD6DMDennis3 жыл бұрын
Also interested in the reciprocity agreements with US hams. That's how I start reading up on licensing in other countries, when I start planning out a possible visit. From what I know, a U.S. ham need not register or apply for a temporary visitor's license in Oz, but have to prepend (or was it append?) "VK" to their normal callsign when operating there. For some countries you need a specific license grant to operate as a foreign visitor.

Wow, I'm glad I'm not an Australian ham operator. In the UK the only payment you have to make is for the exams and that's around £30 to £40, There's no cost for your licence and so long as you inform the the licencing authority every 5 years your right to go. Like Australia there are three licences here, Foundation, 10 wats ERP, Intermediate 50 wats ERP, and full licence 400 wats ERP 73 Dave. MW0MDV

400W ( or 26dBW ) is the same as Full licensees in the UK. There are some lower limits on certain bands or parts of bands. Foundation limit is 10W and Intermediate is 50W. Interestingly Foundation licensees are also allowed on 136kHz and 10 GHz at 1W.

400W PEP is I believe about 100W. We covered this in our foundation training - our trainder did a demonstration with a power meter. So with a 10W PEP limit if I am transmitting AM I can set my radio to about 2.5W to generate 10W PEP so as a rule of thumb the PEP is about 4 times the power the rig is set to. So I'd guess the 400w PEP limit comes from that rule of thumb and the common 100W output of a radio. I reckon the $50 tax per year is not a bad thing over the long term. In countires wiyhoiut a tax the administration can easily say "we want to sell off this amateur spectrum because it is valuable resource and we get nothing for it". In Australia we can say "well you dear Administration you get $X a year for us for the spectrum we use".

The licensing thing is not quite right. you don't have to pass foundation or standard first if you can pass advanced off the bat you only pay once. Source: I sat my advanced license and passed without doing foundation or standard first. This is in contrast to the american system where you have to pass each level in sequence. Seperately, Part of the reason the 1kW trial didn't succeed was that a lot of the people audited using the higher power permit trial either didn't use it or failed to do what was required of them in terms of EMR protection. Overall though this was a well thought out informative video, Thanks Hayden and Josh
