You, Sir, in additional to being practical and well-versed, are the David Attenborough of ham radio KZbin.

Thanks for your channel and content - your content is great for me - it discusses many of the practical issues I would like more info about as a new operator ( I'm new to Amateur - technically I haven't got my license yet - but I'm confidnet I will have and had some radio experience from the Army and dare I say it... CB "back in the day"). I really appreciate that despite being in the industry, you don't constantly push your company and products.

Always a delight to watch and listen. The line isolators especially are so often overlooked and so essential.

I am glad that you mentioned dummy loads, an alarming number of hams don't have them.

Yes, they do. Called poor antennas.

@ 5.00, just remember to use the BACK of your finger. your strongest reflex will pull it away if it's to hot, and you don't feel excessive pain every time you touch or pick up something if you do get burnt.

One suggestion I would add is a pen and notebook. Keep notes on what you have learned, projects you have worked on and ideas for future projects. When you get older like I am it is good to look back on things.

Of course along with a soldering iron, one must buy solder. Industry is mandated via RoHS regulations to use lead free solder, but as a residential rebel, instead of RoHS solder I recommend time-proven 63/37 Tin-Lead alloy solder, rosin flux core. It solders (wets) far more easily than RoHS alloys and at lower temperatures. It also gives a smooth shiny solder joint that won't grow "tin whiskers" that can happen with lead-free solders. Note you can apply this solder to the lead free joints on your radio as it readily mixes into the existing solder joint. Kester 24-6337-0027 works well for me. Buy a couple rolls in the event that it gets banned.

I think you're spot on and agree with your list of accessories. To any of the newer hams...I had an issue where whenever I transmitted a relay in my furnace( my shack is in the basement 15 feet from the furnace) would click like mad...as soon as I wrapped my coax through a ferrite core....problem gone. Thanks for the video Peter..

Off topic. First thank you for your information, it has helped me greatly. Question: Are there any amateurs in America that you know of who "consistently" make contact with other land masses, Europe, Africa, asia...?

I really enjoy your videos. but i did notice that the shot with the two position coax switch you have two connectors hooked up to it that need a better job of soldering or connecting to the coax. I see this a lot in the marine industry ( owners doing their own connections ) and with the salt water around it causes a lot of problems when done improperly. PL259 connectors with the insert for rg58 or rg8x very seldom are properly installed. - Might be a good video for future!

Really like the topics you cover here and your presentaion style, Peter. I was wondering - I have a small garden (I mean REALLY small) and have no space for a vertical with radials. But... I do have the flat roof of my large garage. Will a vertical with radials work on the flat roof or does it need the soil? Anyway, thanks for your videos!
@giricredwolf3 жыл бұрын
To my knowledge, and I could be completely wrong and not understand how this works... A vertical on a roof would be similar in concept to a mobile antenna on the roof of a car. In the latter case, however, the car roof is the ground plane. The radials of a stationary (hopefully!) vertical act as the ground plane. They should not need to be in contact with the earth. That said, your radiation pattern may not be what it would be if the base had ground contact. If the flat roof of your garage is metal, it may be worth experimenting electrically bonding the earth/ground side of your antenna to it. (I am American, and I do not know the codes or terminology that may be different between our countries.)
