My LDG z100 Plus with the IC-705 behaves exactly like your more sophisticated LDG unit. Not so bothered by the glitch, but if you find a way around it, I'm all ears. Thanks for your great videos.

Always enjoyable to see another video but yeah I would be annoyed by that line going low and causing that tuner action as well.

Does the antenna connect to the tuner or does the antenna connect to the amplifier. You mentioned in your video that you have another video describing how it’s connected. Would you happen to have that resource. Thank you
@loughkb3 жыл бұрын
The chain would go, Radio>amplifier>tuner>antenna. The tuner transforms the impedance of the antenna to 50 ohms, which both the radio and the amp expect.
@frankwc0o3 жыл бұрын
@@loughkb That makes sense. Thanks.

Thanks for the video. What is the order these are hooked up. Radio, tuner and amp. Or radio amp and tuner.
@loughkb3 жыл бұрын
The tuner is always the last thing before the antenna. It brings the antennas impedance to 50 ohms, which your amp and radio expect.
@craftsman1234563 жыл бұрын
@@loughkb Thanks Kevin. As 1200mitch mentioned the z100 does the same thing with the z100 and the 705s and causes an issue with use 2 meter and 70cm. It seem to keep the tuner locked in to whatever mode you were last in and does not bypass it. So you can not transmit on these. Been experimenting by turning the tuner off and then disconnecting the cable before shutting off the radio.

@@craftsman123456 When I had my Z11 pro connected to my 705 through the tuner port, and I turned off the tune button on the 705, it kicked the tuner into bypass.

Instead of mod can you just put a switch to energize the ptt on thre amp so the amp can also be used on differant radios and prevents damaging the radio
@loughkb2 ай бұрын
The mod allows it to be used with any radio. There is no risk of damage to the radio.

No doubt LDG will soon have a tuner specifically for the IC-705 and that will fix this annoying problem for 705 owners purchasing everything from scratch. If LDG was smart, they'd give us what most of us want and sell a tuner and amplifier combo as the shack companion for the IC-705. I half expect Icom to offer that as well. Many people will buy the 705 for a portable QRP shack-in-a-box, but will also want to use it at home with more power on all bands.

I noticed you changed bands on the radio but not the amplifier. I thought the MX-P50 band selection needed to be done manually? And while on that subject, what happens if you don't have the band switch on the MX-50 on the same band as your operating from the radio? Is it just the wrong filter selected? Or can you hurt something?
@loughkb3 жыл бұрын
At what time count in the video did I not switch the band switch? If you're not on the correct filter, output can be low and it can stress the mosfet.

Hi Kevin, I have that amp and would like to see how made this modification for the ic-705. I could not find the info, Thanks, Roy ve2uy

See the video where I talk about the mod. It allows the 705 to key it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oWnHqH2DhMl4g6s

Hi Kevin, do you know if this amp will work with a KX2, and if so, how to wire up the jack ? Great video by the way, thanks. Martin
@loughkb3 жыл бұрын
I don't have info on the KX2, but it should have a keying line on an external jack somewhere. Check it's docs. There should be a line that goes to ground when the radio keys up. You also might want to check the follow up video where I talk about modifying the amp to fix a keying issue. Out of the box, it requires your radio to deal with just over 30 milliamps of current to key it. Some radios can't. I do a simple 1 transistor mod that allows anything to key it.

Thank your for sharing but for me the Hardrock 50 with the built in tuner is a better way to go for a amp. Plus you get to build their amp.
@jbloodwo4 жыл бұрын
Kevin, since the amp is only using tip and sleeve wondering if you have tried a mono (TS) cable?
@loughkb4 жыл бұрын
You wouldn't want to do that. The ring is used for ALC voltage needed by certain amps. I don't know if it would damage anything grounding that contact in the radio's jack.
@ridiculous97304 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the video, does the amp still work in dstar mode on the HF band?
@loughkb4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it works on all modes. It doesn't care what modulation is applied to the RF coming in. Just don't drive it with more than 2.5 watts or it starts to distort a bit.
