This looks great. I'm just annoyed about one thing. When this was proposed and tendered, the plan was for there to be not just one, but two different night train services. One from Stockholm to Hamburg, but also another one from Malmö to Brussels! But during the bidding process, SJ was the only operator to place a bid on the Hamburg train, while the Brussels trains received zero bids, because the regulations in Germany were too problematic to work with, due to them illegalising long distance subsidised trains, and requiring that any train in Germany above a certain distance operate on a commercial basis. And frankly as a Copenhagener I'm still mad that we won't have a night train to Brussels, we really need a convenient link to the Benelux, whether it be Amsterdam, Brussels, or any other city in that part of Europe.

as a belgian i totally agree! we were really looking forward to this train. we love the scandinavian countries and it sucks not to have a good train connection to get there. i read that the reason for not getting any bids was that belgium and germany do not subsidies these trains, where denmark and sweden (who see these trains as a public service, which they clearly are) do subsidies them. since the train from hamburg to stockholm only has a small part in germany (so only a little part would not be subsidised) it was still workable to do this. the train from brussels to malmõ would have a too long part that would not be subsidised, making it almost impossible to be profitable. besides that, at the time of the biddings, we were without government in belgium ... and by the time we finally had a government it was to late for them to still do something about this (which was kind of the plan). still hoping for the future though ...

@@sanstoop Yeah. I know it's not as direct for Belgians, but one route which could be served by private operators with relative ease is Copenhagen to Amsterdam. The air route between the 2 is already one of the busiest in Europe, and such a train would spend much less time in germany. European sleeper, as well as a new startup named turquoise trains both have the route as a potential possibility down the line, but for them, the biggest issue is actually finding a partner in Denmark. Currently if you want to run private trains through Denmark, you pretty much only have 1 option and that's hectorrail, who ever since coming under new management, have been a lot less cooperative with new startup rail operators. So Denmark really needs more companies with electric locomotives ready for use in Denmark, and who are willing and able to lease them out to private train operators.

Well said guys! In a way, night trains are a remnant of those past times when travelling by train was the most elegant and sophisticated form of transportation. That's why I'm so excited to learn that (modernised) night trains are returning in many countries of Europe; seeing a night train always evokes the nostalgia of those glorious times of railway history for me.

Simply Railway and the man in seat 61, some of the finest railway sources travelling together! By the way, these same couchette cars (now over 50 years old) were already used (before rebuilding) in the EC-night Alfred Nobel Hamburg to Oslo and Stockholm back in the 1980s/90s, using two ferries. I'd have to dig out old timetables to compare how the travel times have changed, if at all. MUn cars would be great as they are actually some of the best in terms of passenger comfort (though sadly only 4 prototypes were built by initiative of CIWL, going to NS, ÖBB and then RDC).

This gives me hope that someday in the not too distant future I'll be able to travel from southern Sweden to Frankfurt via night train. I was on that route back in the 1980s many times. Between my homes in Stockholms and Zürich (with a train change in Altona). This was before the bridges, so it was a ferry between Germany and Denmark and Denmark to Sweden. Hard to sleep through. Why train then on such a long trip? Well, a first-class train was the price of a discounted economy flight, and the train got me hours of work time while the flight did not.

Amazing video, and amazing to finally see year-round daily overnight trains to continental Europe again! It might be subsidised by the Swedish state, but we really need a comfortable alternative to flying so bad in times of climate change. I also really hope the Danish railway administration approves the sleepers and coaches as soon as possible, so this awesome train can live up to its full potential
@drdewott9154
@drdewott9154 Жыл бұрын
Same. The Danish state is also quite supportive, subsidising it too, despite it not really doing much for them. When they were tendering it, there was also another proposed sleeper train between Malmö/Copenhagen and Brussels, but due to Germany's problematic rules about long distance rail, meant no operators bid for that train. Heck for the Stockholm to Hamburg train, SJ was the only bidder, and that was just because the German bit between Denmark and Hamburg was just small enough to manage, while the other train would've had a route going all the way down to Cologne and from there towards the Belgian border, during all of which they'd have to deal with restrictive german regulations.

Journey time was roughly 14 hours (pretty good comparing with the 12 hour trip in this video), via Helsingborg to Helsingor and Rodby Havn to Puttgarden train ferries of course. It was Couchette and sleeping accommodation only, and I recalled grudging paying extra 15 DM or so for the couchette supplement (I was on railpass of course) on the DB blue and beige carriage. Thanks for posting such an enjoyable video. The Orient Express train shows that carriages can have very long lives and still be clean and comfortable and, of course, the longer the life of a coach the lower the carbon footprint.

Great video Thibault, & glad Mark was able to help you out. Looks like SJ have got a really good service there, & a quick search shows (delays & connection permitting) I could travel from my home station of Chesterfield (UK) to Stockholm Central in 24 hours & 43 minutes, all by rail!

Voltages for the route Hamburg Altona Stockholm are 25kv 50hz Padborg to Oresund Bridge 1.8m strip Pantographs 15kv 16/2/3hz Oresund Bridge To Stockholm 15kv 16.7hz Hamburg Altona Padborg 1.95m Pantograph strips Excellent trip report and for the Vectron Baureihe 193 1293 AFB cruise switch is on the left leg panel. Malmö to Stockholm was a SJ Rc locomotive the prototype for Amtrak AEM-7. Amtrak designation for SJ RC was X995. I do see Man in Seat 61 producing his own video on this Trip

Great report, thanks. I hope the revival of night trains in Europe means fewer flights. Train travel is one of life's great delights and a well-organised sleeper berth is ecstasy!

6 bunks? No catering? No proper sleeper? Which part was better? Ummm no. Who is that going to convince to travel on train than a 1 hour flight and sleep in a proper hotel bed?

Thank you for the fast edit! This was my Friday evening entertainment :) Hamburg-Altona is one ugly station building but I kind of like that station with the loading cars. Altona is nice part of Hamburg too.

Nice trip as always Thibault, good to see services expanding! As for the Couchette cars, I would still like to see something similar in North America, especially on medium distance trains that would be comparable to this...

Thanks for the trip report! Great news; compared to taking the ferry Kiel-Göteborg you save six hours from Zurich to Helsinki. However, on arrival to Stockholm, I prefer the right-hand side view on the Gamla old city
