@@jcfkdoi7344 Hello, this is known as a "salesman" case. Back in the day, "demo" watches were cased in a display caseback type case where the salesman could show the movement to a potential customer without having to open the back of the case each time. After you the customer decided on a watch, it was cased in a regular case with a solid case back.

@@jcfkdoi7344 The cases could be, and most were customized. Who ever was the original owner, got the case engraved with either his initials OR the watch was a gift from a company for many years of service with the company's initials. Hope this helps!

I own two Hamilton 992B Railway Specials. One I bought new in 1968 when I was working for the D&RGW RR in Salt Lake City, Utah. I carried it in RR service for the following five years until I left the RR in 1973, and then daily until 2000. when I decided to "retire" it to my bank safe deposit box as I considered it too valuable to damage or lose. I recently acquired another 1950 vintage 992B which is nearly like new. I recently had it overhauled by a local watchmaker here In Fairbanks,, Alaska, He did a wonderful job and it now runs perfectly. I keep both watches in a padded case and wind them frequently. Unfortunately my local watchmaker has closed his shop and now I have no place to get such watches serviced. My 1968 watch has not been serviced since the mid 1980's and I need to find another place to get such work done. Will you be doing this kind of overhaul work for others in the future? How can I contact you? Or can you recommend a shop somewhere that can be trusted to do this work correctly? Thank you , I really enjoyed your video. L. E. Trump Fairbanks, Alaska
@grumpyswatchrestorations2 жыл бұрын
Hello Mr. Trump. Thank you for the kind words. At this time I do not work on viewer's watches due to time restraints. Perhaps in the future. As for finding a watchmaker, I would recommend maybe googling one in a state closest to you. You can check out Northward Clock & Watch Repair which I believe is in Fairbanks. There is also one in Anchorage. Good luck. Let me know if you have any further questions!

That salesman's case is the absolutely perfect accessory for the 992b movement. Did you ever think of sourcing a Montgomery dial? Assuming those new cases are legitimately well made, I could really go for a stainless salesman case/Montgomery dial 992B. Hours of just watching the movement do its thing.
@grumpyswatchrestorations3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Scott! You're correct, the salesman is an absolute necessity to fully appreciate this fine piece of American horological history. This is the Montgomery dial...is it not? Cheers!

On my "new to me" hamilton 992 has a double hinged case and the interior dust cover appears to hinged as well but I see no detante' to allow an opening point on the dust cover. Any hints? Also where can I purchase one of those dull knife opener's? Thanks agin!
@grumpyswatchrestorations2 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark. You can find watch case knives on ebay, amazon etc... As far as the dust cover, did you try to look with some magnification? Sometimes they are so minuscule, one has to actually look with some magnification. If it indeed does not have one, then you will need to use a pocket knife and a little plastic baggie to protect the case. Take your time and do it very slowly. Eventually it will pop off. Good luck!

Most of those watch cases are just gold plated either 14k or 10K. It often wore off on the edges.

@@grumpyswatchrestorations not a problem at all! Thank you for the video! Would you happen to know a rough guess it would cost to have it gone through it keeps time perfect and can tell it wasn’t used much.
@grumpyswatchrestorations2 жыл бұрын
@@mdtransmissionspecialties it all depends what surprises the watch may be hiding inside. Let's assume that all parts are in excellent condition and you just need to strip it down, wash it, lube up the jewels...well, that's usually around $300. But that's the best case scenario and with these watches and their age, you will most likely need to do some additional work as in polishing pivots, maybe replacing the mainspring, possibly replacing a jewel or two. This could easily run up to $600 and that doesn't include an cosmetic work should the watch require some. Hope this helps!
