Hamilton Hall at Columbia cleared of protesters, NYPD says

The NYPD said Hamilton Hall and the tent city at Columbia University have been cleared after being occupied by demonstrators. Roughly 100 people were detained.

I have to question: How long will those 100 arrested stay in jail? Or is this just another cosmetic set of arrests in spite of the trespassing, damage and threats to the other students. How this is handled will determine whether future middle-east style violent protests will become normalized in the US or whether it will become clear that violent protest, trespass and interfering with fellow citizens lives will not be tolerated.

Today marks a historic occasion. By seizing control of Hamilton Hall, students at Columbia University have anchored in historical memory the nexus between the horrors inflicted in Vietnam that was the hallmark of my generation with the horrors inflicted in Gaza that is the hallmark of the new generation. It is testament to the majesty of these young people that they have risked their futures for the sake of a poor, powerless people halfway around the world in order to uphold that sacred principle that every life is worthy and the murder of none shall pass in silence. As Abraham Lincoln famously quoted, "The judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether." The right of the people of Gaza to live is an eternal truth. May the young soldiers in Hamilton Hall be honored and blessed for not countenancing, come what may, its extinguishment.

The "cost" isn't much, though. In New York, trespassing is a trivial charge -- a "violation," not even a misdemeanor. If they didn't do anything more than camp out in the building, they might just pay a small fine, and get no criminal record.
