Hamilton is a phenomenal Broadway Musical, and Lin-Manuel Miranda and Leslie Odom, Jr outdid themselves with this song and as Alexander Hamilton! In my "Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story? (From "Hamilton")" reaction I listen to MORE of possibly my new FAVORITE Broadway musical!
I'm a Hamilton noob reacting to "Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story? (From "Hamilton")"! Listen to "Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story? (From "Hamilton")" on KZbin here:

Hamilton: An American Musical is a sung-and-rapped-through musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda. It tells the story of American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. Miranda said he was inspired to write the musical after reading the 2004 biography Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow.
The show draws heavily from hip hop, as well as R&B, pop, soul, and traditional-style show tunes. It casts non-white actors as the Founding Fathers and other historical figures. Miranda described Hamilton as about "America then, as told by America now."
It's my first time listening to Hamilton and my first time listening to "Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story? (From "Hamilton")"

I like the interpretation in which in the end Eliza isn't escorted to the front of the stage by her husband, but by Lin Manuel Miranda himself, who is showing her the audience. Her final gasp is the reaction to the fact, that all these people heard the story she was telling all these years.
@Ookirkpatrick12

Lin has actually said that while that's a lovely thought, that was not the intention because the theory falls apart as soon as he is no longer playing Hamilton.
@IONATVS

@@Ookirkpatrick12 The main point still stands though: she is gasping at seeing through beyond the veil to paradise and beyond the fourth wall to see their story being told and remembered again in a way it hasn’t been for the century since her death.

@@IONATVS everything time Lin or Tommy Kail have been interviewed they've said there isn't a definitive reason for the gasp or cry. Each actress has their own interpretation. Even Pippa has said she thinks about it differently different nights. As Lin puts it "A gasp is a gasp is a gasp." It's art, there doesn't need to be hard and fast meaning 🤷‍♀️
@IONATVS
@IONATVS Жыл бұрын
@@Ookirkpatrick12 While I agree that the same moment can have multiple valid interpretations and talking with the author and actors can give you insight into their interpretations, that doesn’t mean the popular fan interpretation is wrong, in fact I’d say that it seems to be the first interpretation so many viewers come to upon seeing it gives it a lot of credence, if not as the “word of god” (author’s intent when writing it) at least as a significant and meaningful interpretation that resonates with a lot of people. It frames the entire play, while focused on Alexander and narrated from the viewpoint by Aaron Burr as firmly dedicated to and identified with the memory and mission of Eliza Hamilton by definitively answering the question she asks in the final song with a resounding “yes, we will tell your story.” And it’s a damn beautiful one.
@darsynia

@@Ookirkpatrick12 While I hear that, an interpretation of art is an interpretation of art is an interpretation of art. I think when I watched it, I felt it was Lin (just like I thought it was Lin saying 'That's true!' about the tomcat) taking Eliza over to see the audience. And when it's someone else, it's the actor who played Hamilton taking Eliza over. 'Death of the Author' is definitely one of the lenses through which people interpret art and media, and while I respect LMM's take on what he was thinking when he wrote it, it's not 'wrong' to disagree since it's an interpretation. Tolkien struggled HARD with this, I can sympathize.

Now that you are done with the show. I can say this: Notice that Eliza is the only character in this show that doesn't rap. Along with the fact that Eliza has lived the longest out of everyone in the show is that, rapping in the show is showing that everyone is trying to say as much as possible in their shorter lives. Eliza has more time than everyone, so she is the only one she doesn't rap. That was explained poorly, bit I hope it came across. P.S. Can't wait for your reactions to the cut songs

this song makes me go feral it's so so good. such masterful lyricism, so meaningful. Eliza really did live another 50 years, she lived til 97 which is absolutely crazy for the time period. She had so much to do, and she lived her life to the fullest. And a few things, 1. The costume choice for this song. The only people in unique outfits are Burr (who lives), Hamilton (who dies), and Eliza (who tells your story) 2. This show is called Hamilton not Alexander Hamilton for a reason: it is as much of Eliza's story as it is Hamilton's. 3. The reason "the orphanage" hits so hard for us is that throughout the entire musical we are constantly reminded that hamilton is an orphan, so hearing that she went on to run an orphanage and care for orphans gives like the ultimate bittersweet and warm feeling. 4. Eliza's gasp at the end of the musical is up to interpretation, but the most popular one (and the one held by Philipa Soo) is that she is breaking the fourth wall, portraying the actual spirit of Eliza seeing the crowd and seeing how her and her husband's legacy is being told across the world now. Eliza truly was best of wives and best of women 😭 I saw hamilton in chicago in 2019, definitely go if you can!

She gasps because Lin showed her the audience and she realized they've been telling her story. Note that she takes the first bow - in Broadway shows, that means that she's the main character. Lin's bow is second, and then the whole company bows. So the show is really about Eliza. ;) And yes, all three of the sisters loved him - because the actress who played Peggy also played Maria Reynolds. ;)

Lin Manuel Miranda has said that he doesn’t tell the actresses that play Eliza what they’re looking at. They each have their own version and vision. I interpret it as her breaking the 4th wall and seeing the audience, realizing that their story has been told. Others think she’s looking at Hamilton adds she dies. It’s up to the audience to interpret it.

Ah really interesting Detail: Washington owned Slaves. this is well documented. When Eliza sings "I speak out against Slavery" Washingtin stands behind her, looks shocked for a moment and then bows his head to her. It was Christopher Jackson(Washingtons Actor) way of acknowledging this uncomfortable piece of history.

It also pays homage and catches the attention of the people who actually are well read on american history, because it is known that george washington did drastically change his views on slavery through his lifetime and though he did not make his feelings and convictions known publicly because of his concern for how it could tear the new nation apart, he did privately wish for the abolition of slavery, though he did believe it could not be accomplished through any other method than gradually introducing new legislation. In the end george washington's relationship with slavery is a more complex one, but I think it's fair to say if he'd been born perhaps 20-30 years after he was, that he may have had a much more true abolitionist approach. I think it's evident in many of his decisions and private writings that his priority was the nation as a whole and that he was very aware of how fragile it was, and in that sense he had some trouble opposing things even he disagreed with, for fear of causing massive rifts in the country which im sure he suspected could cause fragmentation of the country itself.

One really small detail that often gets overlooked. When Eliza says "I speak out against slavery" Chris Jackson as Jefferson bows/hangs his head. Chris Jackson chose to do this as Washington being ashamed he didn't do more to fight against slavery and let it continue. Remember the line in Act 1 "Black and white soldiers wonder alike if this really means freedom" and Washington's "not yet" is a double endendre. Chis Jackson as Washington is hanging his head as a disappointment he didn't stop slavery when he could have and it would go on another 70ish years

So that you know, not only is the ophanage still in operation, the ophans got a special performance, so the gasp at that performance had something extra on it. Also, Hamilton's banking system is still running like a top and the Bank of NY still exists after all these years, and he IS on the $10 bill, and there are a few statutes of him around, so it wasn't like he was completely forgotten.

My grandmother lived to 108 and 11 months. She started wondering if God had forgotten her, since she had out lived her grandparents, her parents, her husband, all her brothers and sisters, a slew of her nieces and nephews, her husband's brothers and sisters, three out of her four children (the two boys as infant and toddler, my mother when I was 10) nearly all of her friends and cousins (there was one cousin still alive, in her nineties!). She had been a visitor to the local nursing home in her nineties, visiting people 20 years and more her junior, and once she finally landed in the nursing home herself, since she could no longer walk very well, she was the most 'with -it' person there, with the exception of the medical personnel and staff. I even got her into Harry Potter (French translation) and she lived to read "Goblet of Fire". She had lunch and took a nap and passed away in her sleep. She used to say to those who visited (and she had a ton of visitors) that it was a little quiet in that place (since most of the population was senile, and she could really only talk to the staff). So she was ready, more than ready, to move on to the next life.

Just wow. I’d recommend anyone to see it live if you can. Even with different casts (The guy who played burr was really really really good. , it’s still the most amazing night you’ll ever have.

It has been great watching you react to Hamilton, I had been one of the original people who suggested it on your We Don't Talk About Bruno reaction and I didn't expect so many people to agree with me. I am glad we brought this musical to your attention as it is one of my favorites. I hope you do more content like this.

I do hope you go back and watch it all in one go soon. Please share your thoughts with us after you do. It will be interesting to hear your perspective after getting lots of feedback and stories throughout the run. 😊 I also wondered if there was a reason behind the order of the bow-line. I haven't heard of any, but it was nice to notice who stood between Lafayette and Mulligan. 😉

The musical’s name isn’t Alexander, it’s Hamilton. While it’s mostly just about him of course, you can interpret it as being about both Hamiltons- Eliza and Alex. Also, if you’re interested in more of Lin Manuel Miranda’s work, you should watch the movie adaptation of In The Heights. It’s really well made, and (I say, preparing for an onslaught in the replies) even better than the musical in my opinion. Really happy you enjoyed the show, and excited to see where the channel goes next.

Years ago, I came across a KZbin channel that had like three different videos pointing out small details in the songs and I can't find that channel, but now that I am aware of those three, it causes certain sad songs to hurt more, such as Phillip apologizing to Eliza "for forgetting what you taught me." in "Stay Alive (Reprise)", implying he thought he had miscounted, and also the fact that seven was the one number nine-year-old Phillip stumbled on in the piano part of "Take A Break" (which was also the melody of "The Ten Duel Commandments", made almost blatantly obvious at the part where they count down before Alex's part to Angelica, as well as the heartbeat after Alex throws away his shot ending with a bell when Burr says "were both by his side when he died."

Okay so, I doubt you'll remember me but I used to watch and chat in your streams (stopped because of school and other stuff) and this is the first time I'll be commenting on your youtube channel (hopefully not the last!). Anyway, as soon as I saw you had posted this video I felt that I had to compile a list of all the cut/deleted songs from hamilton that I know of. I've tried to organize this by song placement but here you go: -This One's Mine (original of Helpless) -Mulligan's Goodbye (after Meet Me Inside) -No John Trumbull (before Cabinet Meeting #1) -original of Schuyler Defeated -Let It Go (after original Schuyler Defeated) -One Last Ride (replaced with One Last Time) -original of The Adams Administration -I Have This Friend (replaced with Hurricane) -Congratulations (after Reynolds Pamphlet) -First Burn (original of Burn) -Dear Theodosia Reprise (after Burn) -One Last Ride Reprise (after Dear Theodosia Reprise) -original of Your Obedient Servant -Ten Things, One Thing (original of The World Was Wide Enough) -Cabinet Battle #3 (placement unknown) There are plenty of animations for most (if not all) of these songs so feel free to check them out. Some of these may be wrong or I missed some songs so anyone can correct me if I'm wrong. I don't even know if you'll see this comment but I hope it does help you out a bit. I know it's a long list so feel free to ask any questions about it YoBGS!

I also think the meta point for Lin (maybe too obvious) is that Hamilton's story really wasn't known until this play compared to the founders who actually became president... There was literally a bill to remove him from the $10 bill that got totally scrapped a few years after Hamilton debuted

Great. Its 0:40 AM and I wanted to go to bed... well, not anymore! For further hamilton Stuff there are two major players I'd reccomed: The Hamilton Mixtape, an Album on which many of the songs are reworked by prominent Hip Hop and Rap artists and the Cut songs: Congratualtions and First Burn take Place in and after the Reynolds Pamphlet, There is an extended Version of "Schuyler defeated" that tells you that Theodosia Burr Srr, Burrs wife has fallen ill, and "Cabinet Battle Nr. 3" a cut cabinet battle about the point of abolition. As a bonus I would highly reccomend watching the two big whitehouse appearances: First the one from _before_ Hamilton, when all LMM had was the first song "Alexander hamilton" which he performed when he was asked to play in the White House for Obama, and second an incredibly touching performance of "One last time" by the whole Cast as a farewell to Obama. Not a dry Eye in the house...

During Eliza's line "I speak out against slavery, you could've done so much more", you can see Washington look at her in awe before bowing his head. That was not in the original script; Chris Jackson, the actor, asked for it to be added in to show Washington's shame at being a slave owner.

You couldn’t be more on the money about this being Meta for Lin Manuel Miranda. Miranda was inspired to become an artist when he saw the musical “Rent” on Broadway at 16. The creator of the “Rent” Johnathon Larson wrote like he was “running out of time”. Larson never got to see any of his work become successful. The night before “Rent”’s first public opening Johnathon Larson unexpectedly died of an aneurysm at 35 years old. Larson’s story has inspired Lin to make the most of the time he has ever since. When it was time for Lin to make his directorial debut he chose to make a movie musical of Larson’s small off Broadway show “Tick, Tick BOOM!” It also served as somewhat of a biopic where we get to see Larson continue to create throughout creative failures. While making the the most of the little time he has left in life as his clock was ticking away. I think that you would enjoy Tick Tick Boom just as much as Hamilton. It is on Netflix and stars Andrew Garfield as Johnathon Larson. There are trailers on KZbin that would make great reactions. The first song of the musical “30/90” would also make for a great reaction. I have enjoyed this Hamilton journey with you. I’m looking forward to your reactions to all of the Hamilton extras to come as well. Edit-Larson died practically destitute, but it can’t be understated how revolutionary “Rent” was in 1995. The musical forever changed Broadway (and in some ways ensured it’s survival). It opened doors for young kids of every race, sexual orientation, etc. & told us that as long as we had something say we had a right to be a part of musical theater. Our music had a right to be in musical theater. Larson truly woke up an entire generation. There couldn’t be shows like “Hamilton” without “Rent”. One article I read awhile back said “Rent” crawled so musicals like “Hamilton” could run.

And if you think about it it’s called Hamilton not Alexander Hamilton the Musical so really this is also Eliza’s story too her mission is fulfilled because all see did was make sure her husband’s legacy was told since she was one of Founding Mothers but is more camera shy because she wanted more recognition for her husband rather then her. That orphanage still exists today in New York and Hamilton and her had a foster kid living alongside their own kids that lived with them for several years as well. A funny story is Former President James Monroe visited her and he was one of the key people that brought her husband down and she cursed him out so she maintained that sass she always had despite being an old lady. And I’m with the theory that wasn’t Hamilton leading her to the front of the stage it was Lin showing her this is what she always strived for and she sees us the people seeing her husband’s story told as well as her own so their story and she’s happy

I love how at the end, you can see Daveed, Okieriete, and Anthony playing Lafayette, Mulligan, and Laurens as their ghosts. If they had the time to do it for the stageplay, I wish they could have put Daveed back into his hair pin for the one line, "She tells our story," but that's my only complaint with this beautiful ending.

I like that the play is just called "Hamilton" It's not just Alexander's story, but Eliza's as well. The ending when Eliza gasps is Eliza finally seeing the audience, the people who heard the story she worked so tirelessly to preserve and collect. The entire time, she never acknowledges the audience, whenever she addresses them, she speaks as if she's talking to Alexander Hamilton: HE has her Helpless, she hopes HE burns, has she done enough to tell HIS story. The final moment of the show is when she pierces the veil and she sees all her work preserving his legacy paid off and was made known to all audience members.

As you said, everyone who changes characters in the second act has a connection to their character in act one. Peggy loved Alexander like a brother. In 'Helpless' Alexander even says that Peggy confides in him. And in real life it was Alexander who was with her when she died. But in act 2 Reynold's has an affair with him so you get a shift from platonic love to lust. So her actress being involved with the 'Me, I loved him' line makes sense.

I’ve always interpreted Eliza’s gasp at the end to be the realization that as she was telling Hamilton’s story, Lin Manuel Miranda told Eliza’s story and legacy! Yes, she takes Alexander’s hand into her afterlife, but its LMM that walks her to the top of the stage. Also - all three women “me i loved him” say they loved him because - Eliza and Angelica did both love and admire him. Peggy looked to Hamilton as an older brother “Peggy confides in me”, but additionally the actress that is Peggy is also Moriah Reynolds who “loved” him as well.
