The "slop" in the tape measure is exactly the width of the metal tab. It slides in for internal measurements and slides out for external measurements.

for those of you who use solidworks. you can upload an image to your sketch that then asks to to identify a reference length. so for this project you could take a top down photo of the silicone tray and tell the image that the width is XYZ. it then scales the drawing to the right size and you trace the outline with the line tool. for the radius you would do the same process to find it until your circle line over lap the image lines correctly. this is super handy to use on a variety of things and a great tool to have in your arsenal. im not sure if other modeling software has this, though.

Fusion 360 also has this feature. If the thing I'm modeling is small enough, I place it on a [document] scanner so I don't have to worry about lens distortion.

A decent set of calipers is essential. The first one I bought was Pittsburgh brand from Harbor Freight. A complete waste of money. The battery would last maybe one day, without even turning it on. I finally broke down and bought a set of Mitutoyo calipers for around $100 or so. They're fantastic and the battery is a good 4 months old now and still going strong.

I just started playing around with using my 3D printer to make silicon molds for epoxy work. The additive manufacturing works well, but so would the reductive manufacturing for this process. I’m continually amazed how useful both CNC and 3D printers are in the workshop.

Funny I see this! I love my shaper trace. I have a video coming on it soonish. I think it might be a month or two because I just moved into a new studio and need to get set up, but I have it in the pipeline! Love the product and this was a great showcase of it!!! :D

I switched to using metric for really intricate measurements like this, it's just easier to say it's 193mm than 7.598in, at least it's easier to me. Still don't have a fully intuitive feeling for what 193mm "looks like", but so far it's been working well.
