Dawei Zhao Definitely not. It takes tens of thousands of years at the very least for something like that to evolve. Also, natural selection only favors traits that keep you from dying until you can reproduce. Resistance to bullet ant toxin is irrelevant in that regard.

Dawei Zhao The time it takes for evolution to select for that is still much, much longer. I think a more likely explanation is cultural norms of pain tolerance in the tribe. I don’t know if humans can build up tolerance to the toxin through repeated exposure, but perhaps that also can explain why they manage the ritual so well.

Dawei Zhao I think it’s possible for an individual to build up mental fortitude and/or physical tolerance to the toxin over the course of their life span. But I don’t think this is then expressed in the genes of their offspring. The time it takes for that to happen evolutionarily is much much longer than the time the tribe has performed this ritual.
