Sold my one-owner -180 as well. It had the clock, which I really don't care for (like you) as it's noisy. They are just beautiful. I replaced it with an original boxed HQ-170 VHF that may have never left the box. Unreal. It was a lucky find! Another great video, Terry. Thanks.

The clocks become noisy when the Telechron gear box lubrication hardens. There are some tricks to restore then without disassembly.

at 10:40 that was Schuman symphony # 3 Die Rheinische on what looks like the 49 meter band. Just a nice river boat trip floating down the Rhine. I lusted after this receiver as a kid listening to the shortwave bands..... Now, decades later I have one that should arrive in 3 days....we'll see what shape it is in.

My husband has a mint HQ-180 with the DD-101H Frequency display replacing the clock. Beautiful radio.

Did I hear: "christine condition"? If so, that's a great analogy of a vintage beauty that looks brand new! Many thanks for sharing this!

I owned a HQ-170A as well,...'Drift Monster' is a very true comment and the reason why I moved it on.

Terry, I thought that the slot control default setting should be all the way to the left. I could be wrong, beautiful receiver. Thanks for sharing.

Correct, Eric. 12 O'clock position should be a null position. S Meter also needs adjustment as it is lying on the left peg sometimes. Still & all, a nice rig. I have one with the matching speaker!

Great rig. I just recently acquired an HQ-170A with clock that works well. Only cost me about 200 dollars ~N4TYX~

Back in the day, the people who were really serious got the JX models which had the dial with a series of fixed xtals besides the standard tuning. Often the JX models were used for ndustrial or government use. The JX like the Super Pro series attracted a different set of users that the general ham oriented "clock" radios....

The HQ-180 is a great old radio but you have the slot frequency adjustment set wrong. It needed to be set all the way clockwise OR counter clockwise when casually tuning otherwise you are actually slotting out your center frequency. Oh well, you sold it anyway.

Do you actually keep any radios? lol .. Love the Hammered Ham! Your comment about making music with shortwave is something I've been thinking of for years. Imagine how cool the natural fading properties of a voice in the distance combined with weird noises would add to a track. Heck even add a Moog Synthesizer and create something retro!

The new receivers won't last near as long as the old boat anchors. I've got two Yaesu's "modern" rigs that need to be repaired so I'll be moving a boat anchor into their space tomorrow. Love my boat anchors...
