I can't help but say it, but I (or should I say we) called this not only a few months ago, but a few YEARS ago. The question that was asked back then was "If the Faball Hammers are anywhere from 76U to 79U, what is stopping Hammer from putting a similar hardness on a urethane ball and releasing that!?" We now know the answer: They had to be a Bad Ass (See what I did there?) and stick it to the PBA while doing exactly this. Now, that said, we don't know anything about the specs or the core yet, but I'd suspect it to be similar (hell, they could have gone the Mo route and updated the original Faball core in it to fit today's game and put the cover on it), but I think this will look nice, especially since there hasn't been a black pearl of any Hammer ball, and if the logo is grey, it will sell immensely. It will definitely have a spot in my urethane bag, next to my BW Purple Pearl Urethane and BW Black Urethane. I just hope it passes the true Urethane test.

Something else to think about with this ball. It is going to do two things: Undercut sales of the Purple Pearl Urethane (which is still legal worldwide except the PBA), and force the USBC's hand. With the TV exposure the Black Pearl Urethane will get, no-one will be seeing the Purple Pearl Urethane anymore, so sales of the Black Pearl Urethane will go up while Purples go down, especially if they go down in production. That in turn could force USBC tipping its hand in raising the hardness level to 78U, which would effectively ban any urethane ball made over the past 10 years (both catalog and overseas; the BW Urethane series overseas is around 75-77U). That could ultimately be the goal coming into 2024-2025 or 2025-2026 season, especially depending on the sales of the Black Pearl Urethane. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a refresh of the BW Urethane series: both overseas and catalog.

Beanz, did you see the JR Raymond video where he asked Hammer why they could not just change the hardness of the purple pearl hammer after all their claims that softness was not an issue and that it was just made by the best engineers in the best factory? I continue to find it strange that they are so slow in responding to this ruling! Your thoughts?

I didn't see the video. Urethane is chemical engineering. If Hammer has a new cover, there is likely a reason. ;)

4&2 less than the Purple is a great thing to hear. I had to use less surface and polish the purple to get it to be useable. A weaker purple is what I’ve wanted for years.

Someone posted an article in a bowling group I'm in on face book saying the black pearl urethane is gonna be pros first and March for other people, limited supplies and they wanted it hush hush that'd it'd be state side. Was a copy of a letter sent out to hammer staffers. I don't understand why they would tell staffers to keep it on the down low.

Has there ever even been a ball approved for PBA use that wasn't released stateside? Just curious because I couldn't come up with any other than the Skill 3.0x balls. I think they were more concerned with keeping sales of the NU Hammer up since the non staffer reviews are in.

@@andyw2550 No. the PBA has an unwritten rule that all balls used for their tournaments be catalog balls, not OEM/overseas balls. That's why those throwing the BW Purple Pearl Urethane (Overseas; Japan and S. Korea) had to switch to the BW Pink Pearl Urethane (catalog). As far as the NU Hammer goes, think back about this time 30 years ago, when the Faball Hammers were still kings of urethane, with the NuLine XCalibur, Purple Rhino Pro, and Ebonite Turbo/X were coming up. The NU basically falls into that category, giving a urethane-like motion in a reactive ball, while the Black is like the Faball Hammers, which were anywhere from 76-79U.

@@athlonen On the PBA site, I see they have an official listing of certified bowling balls for PBA use. It's not very searchable but I didn't see any obvious overseas balls in the certified listing. I thought it was a PBA rule that the equipment thrown must be on the certified list unless an exception is given.

@@andyw2550Exactly. If you notice, every ball the PBA has on their list is from a ball company's catalog; anything else would be considered an OEM or private release. The overseas balls are OEM/private release, even though they are USBC certified. One would have to use an equivalent catalog ball (read: in that ball company's normal catalog of products) to that OEM/overseas release, as the OEM/overseas balls are not allowed.

I'm interested to see what they came up with. I'm afraid they may have run out of time and just released the best they had come up with. That being said, if the goal is to control the pattern on the fresh, it probably will work decent to well. If the goal is to continue moving into the pattern as the pattern breaks down (much like the players using the purple previously), I have serious doubts this ball will be able to hold up with the same core and the harder surface. I predict it will work out well for the left side if they aren't following too many other left handed players but if they get 4th/5th in the step ladder it may not allow them to stay in Urethane for the entire thing and keep their carry. That's assuming the core is the same as the purple. We don't know the core, so it could be a higher flare core and not just the same core as the purple.

the whole thing feels like marketing hype. Happens to "leak" the staffer email on the release day of the IQ78. The whole E-mail just stinks it up of marketing department. Okay so we start manufacturing these balls and we create a "shortage" of them while PBA guys throw them and we are manufacturing them for the future release day. Same think they always do but they need the hype for this one. Masterful Marketing as the ball companies always manage to do! Best Marketing folks around at the ball companies if you ask me.

I had the email prior to the IQ release day. I didn't leak this to correspond with any ball release if that is what you are insinuating, mainly because I don't keep track of URD in real time. I can promise you this....Brunswick wasn't happy about it.
