Hammer is SUPER UNDERRATED! UPDATED Hammer Guide | Monster Hunter World 2024

yo, 600 hours on the hammer and counting. here are a couple tips, insights and thoughts on the hammer from me first of all, do NOT spam use the clutch claw attack, it drains your sharpness really fast, especially if used right after the 3rd charge, as each of the 5-7 hits drains sharpness. only use it when the monster is down or when you have a very good opening for it. marathon runner, stamina thief and focus, good as they may sound, aren't really as good as you may think. if anything, having focus only hinders with the gameplay, because, since it charges your attacks quicker, you may think you're still on the 1st charge but end up doing the upswing and dying or getting knocked down, so personally id try avoiding it at any cost. best damage combos aside from the big bang would be the golf swing combo from a standing position. fastest best damage combo (from non standing position) would be running up to the monster > draw attack > directly into big bang, IMPORTATNT! skip the 2nd swing after the draw attack as it does pretty much no damage and loses you a second of time, which could be detrimental to hitting the big bang finisher. ledge abusing is also something that should definitely be learned by anyone learning how to play the hammer as it is the best way to dish out the most amount of damage. do not use the follow up attacks after jumping off a ledge/wall UNLESS you had 3 charges and you can guarantee that you will hit the monster as it locks you in a pretty long animation and it is hard to hit on a monster that isn't stunned. obviously you should ALWAYS run airborne on hammer, as that 30% extra damage can be quite a lot later on when you're going for full damage builds e.g.: i forgot to put it on one of my builds once and was doing only 900 damage after a simple ledge hop, and after i put it on it is now doing around 1.1k slugger and stamina thief, in my honest opinion, are bait skills that just take up slots that can be used for other more important skills (unless you have full fatalis gear) personally would recommend going full damage over QoL, especially if you're playing alone. the monster will be on the ground half of the hunt regardless of if you're running slugger or not. an ideal build with all mentioned above would include: agitator 5/7 attack boost 7 critical eye 7 (necessary for 100% affinity on fatalis hammer, can be lower if you reach 100% affinity before 7) weakness exploit 3 critical boost 3 airborne recovery up 3 (for health regen augment/more healing from potions) handicraft, evade window and quick sheath are also good and those can go into free slots you may have left, but i think the skills mentioned above are the best skills to run on hammer and are skills that should be in EVERY build you have. obviously, if you're running full fatalis armor and have a lot of high level gems (such as attack jewel+ 4 or expert jewel+ 4), you can fit in a lot more QoL skills such as stamina thief or slugger, yes i am contradicting myself here, but the hammer really doesn't require more than the 7 skills mentioned above for optimal damage output that works on every single monster in the game. all things considered, very informative guide, nothing that you said was misleading or wrong. as you stated its all a matter of preference so you can only take my advice and try it out. if you read this far, thank you, and i hope this helps out in any way shape or form, feel free to ask more questions :)

@@coycen this made me laugh, and you got a solid point. i will say, though, the game is fun, and there's way more to the game than just the story, like doing all the optional quests and participating in all the events, and helping people out in their quests. you'll always find people to play with, so it's not boring.

Nah that's a bait skill you're better off running something else if you're going crit Secondly don't sleep on QoL skill depending on what you're doing they can be a great asset Lastly spam clutch claw attack on head it's easiest way to get a consistent stun BTW focus is peak just got to get use to the timing, I never play with out it

"Oh but you need to be affected by blight for that", yeah, and every hard fight in the game has some sort of blight to it (except nergi, I mean he gives bleed but like... yk ), stun counts as a blight btw.

you can do clutch claw combo after jump attacks (on pledges too) and sliding attacks, if it was at charge lvl of 2 or 3, and airborne is a must skill on a hammer, +30% damage to all jump attacks is a must thing for a hammer.

Agreed, and you can also continue the chain off of jump attacks too. At lvl 2 charger it does the uppercut, and at lvl 3 charge it does brutal upswing (spinning upward attack). So you have multiple chains off of jump attacks. And yeah airborne is a must have for hammer.

As a dwarf myself, i'm glad you made a video about hammers. It's a great weapon, and even if it can't one shot every living creature as greatsword can, the possibility of delivering a CBT session to knocked out monsters is a massive plus itself.

I have over 1k hrs on hammer this guide is great for starters of the class I will say while ledge hopping is area depend it it can be done on any jump able ledge, which means when you start to learn how to time and roughly position knock downs on monsters it becomes super useful. It's damage rivals big bangs dps and can be used to stun and mount chain a monster for even more knock downs. And spin can seem niche as first but is great when well timed at starting on helping position those knock downs and lead into huge dps following it with big bang

I suggest using affinity sliding if you like spamming the slide move. Boosts your affinity by 30% after you slide and stays on for a while afterwords. That's what I like anyways.

As a newcomer to MHW from MHR and as a hammer main, I dropped the hammer coming to world because I thought there wasn't going to be something similar to the silkbind spinning bludgeon. I thought you only could do it from slides in this game, this video made me realize that with the clutch claw you can do pretty much the same thing with spinning flying smash. I can't believe I didn't know about it for this long. It does seem to force you to land on said monster, which is nice for this game. Although I think I might prefer doing my best dual blades impression in MHR. Can't wait to become a spinning hammer bro in MHW now as well, thank you! :D

With a spinning attack after a slide or off a wall you can clutch claw immediately after to spin dash like Sonic right onto the monster. Great for when you miss or want to followup

I love hammer even more when I use guild palace layer weapon I love axe design and I have ooga bunga brain so I only use hammer whit slugger secret And best tip I can get is max your slugger 3 or 5 if you have secret slugger set trust me make monster falling down 3 time in a row is like your best dream

Note: 1196 was your inflated attack. The game doesn't show the player's total RAW in MHW, just the RAW value of skills. Ex, equip ATK levels and you get way more ATK than the RAW value of 3.

I can't really add anything to this but personally I have two playstyles with hammer, one for solo and one for multiplayer. When I'm solo I go for the head relentlessly, but if I'm with others I slap on wide range and mushroomancer and focus on tenderizing the entire monster constantly while making sure no one gets below 75% hp. Recently I decided to branch out and get comfy with more weapons and I'm proud to say that I am at least competent with 8 of the 14 weapons, unfortunately it is time to return to monke to defeat Furious Rajang and Raging Brachydios.

Absolute chad play style. I play the same solo, on teams I just get more relentless and go from targeting the head strictly to targeting the head and arms/legs. Since going for KO’s isn’t as viable in multiplayer as you’ll get 3 tops, it makes it more viable to invest in part break topples too.

That lil ledge backwards hop as well as the wall spinning attack are especially and particularly useful against the packs and fliers in the rotten vale when you’re trying to hunt for specific mats in that nasty hp halving fog, you get swarmed pretty easily around and above you

Update 2: finished low rank, was a literal breeze. Killed nergigante the other night, who was also relatively easy minus that giant air leap lunge that he does. Carted me twice but we got the Dub. High rank is feeling almost as easy as low rank thus far. Back to back KOs, hammer still carrying me.

You can flinch a monster with crystalburst or piercing pods etc, while holding your charge before dropping a brutal big bang (Simple hammer tips)

You can actually spin uphill with the spinning bludgeon after sliding. Turn towards any direction right after you release the charge button.

Hi! I'm a little late to this, (and VERY late to this game, lol) but I just picked up MHW and went with Hammer as my first weapon and from what I can tell, I chose correctly! I'm having a blast! I do love that you were talking about the mid-air hop off the ledge as being unreal, however swinging around a metal hammer that my napkin math puts at >500kg, no problem. :D

One day a switch in my head flipped and I left the edgy rogue behind to favors barbarian type, so I switched from LS to Hammer and now I've started a new save to learn it from the very beginning of the brain. I think it's not a braindead weapon. The combos are easy to memorize and have tons of paths, but the thought goes to how and when to use what combos. Also there's a million resource to keep track of like the charge level, the overcharged that you need to maintain and the stamina. Great video btw.

I went IG in original world launch, then began dabbling with Greatsword, as well as meta charge blade. I then moved to PC to start anew, went hammer for the sole purpose of "back to basics" playstyle where it isn't about doing combos, spamming powerful moves, it's all about getting to know monsters. And it's really good, I will say, building for hammer is a bit weird, it's hard to tell what stuff you should go for, specifically in terms of elemental powers, when there is no good non-elemental option. It's kind of like the sword and shield, though, with actually good damage outside of the true-leaping-slash combo. It's both a "newbie" weapon as well as the true end-game experienced player weapon because of how it improves with your ability to read monsters.

I've been playing hammer since the first game, and earplugs are a must for me. Nothing cuts through me more than getting in the right spot and having to dash or get interrupted. I love mobility and power.

Listen, having the monster down out and you smashing his head in with a Hammer is an experience no other weapon can give you. Not even close. All the cool flashy stuff are cool and all but there's something more brutal and primal in smashing its ugly head with a hammer and watching parts flying in the air.

The only time Ive found to not chose the charge, is if the monster is downed and your in position to get the big bang full combo on the monsters head, (and not charged, ie using an item) sometimes just that 2 seconds to charge prevents the big bang finisher from landing depending on the monster

I dont have the exact numbers but you can access a higher damage combo by doing running charge 3 then wait for 2 hits and cancel into the charge 1 attack to finish with the bigbang combo

It works on airborne spin attack but only on the attacks mid air and not the final landing hit which is the big dmg, either way just the regular jump attacks are already very strong so i think its still worth a mention

When you power charge your charged attacks have a slightly longer recovery time before you can roll so there is a reason to not use it although if you’re a true hammer bro you don’t use your brain you just swing big stick at monster face😎

Seems really hard to find anything up to date for those weapons, there's a couple for SA but the other two pretty much don't exist on KZbin lol. Bowgun guides are also rare apparently.. Sigh
