hammer reshaping

My piano is being reconditioned as I type this. It's an old Aeolian upright built in 1921. The technician was amazed at its condition and showed me all of the worn felts and flat hammers. I always wondered why no matter how hard I tried, the tone would be harsher with some keys. I can't wait to play her after the reconditioning.

Were you happy with the result? I had filed my hammers and liked the sound, but needed the action to be maintained, adjusted, and actually I don't like that the instrument builder also filed the hammers, now I think I will reshape them myself and use needles to get a softer tone when playing not so loud passages.

On my upright after shaping hammers I have streched a 14mm wide KEVLAR braid over the felt - that should stop the strings cutting into the felt - sounds good too!

I saw in the background (about 4:14) that you have the book "Rebuilding the Player Piano" by Givens. I got the same book as a teenage when my parents bought a Player Piano which they now gave to me. For me, owning a Player Piano is sort of like the 65 Mustang we owned - it includes investing your time in it. I was watching your video because the piano has a damper issue on a few of the keys.
