This is not how the helmet safety is measured. It is by measuring the impact inside the helmet. For example in this video if you see the crash on second helmet, you could see how the helmet bends while it’s getting struck. Even though the helmet is not damaged, it transferred all the force inside and that is why it was not damaged. If you see the Axor/MT one, they were not deformed a bit on striking with the hammer but it got damaged, which means that they absorbed all the impact and did not transfer it inside. They save the head by absorbing the impact while the second one saved itself by transferring all the momentum to the head. Obviously no helmets should be reused after a single crash if you are too serious about the safety. It is not how the helmets save themselves from crash, but how helmets save what is inside them from crashes. I appreciate the effort you put in making this video but unfortunately, this one id misleading. Helmet crash tests are not done this way.

A good helmet is supposed to break up on a heavy impact.. If it does not, then most of that energy is transferred to your skull during an accident.. This has higher chances of your skull cracking.. So they say a good helmet should break if it has a very high impact.. So according to this SMK helmets are one of the best.. Please do your research and your engineering before you come to a conclusion
@TigerKoul Жыл бұрын
You mean to say all those road side helmets which breaks easily are better ?
@varadjoshi6523 Жыл бұрын
@@emmanuelpraveen1Nahi bhai. Flexing is important. Not breaking. Difference hain. Of course any amount of flexing is not good. It has be designed and calculated properly. Many helmet manufacturers use flexing shells to better absorb impacts. However flexing also has downsides like extremely high impacts (almost unrealistic in any crash) cant be handled as well. Some helmet materials are designed to break in a particular manner if they are in a situation that force is too high. It is better if not break, but if it has to break then atleast break in such a way to disperse more impact. Eg fibreglass shells. Atleast this is what I understand after seeing helmet reviews.
@emmanuelpraveen1 Жыл бұрын
@@TigerKoul high impact i said.. not break easily.. Roadside helmets either break very easily or hardly break at all.. both are bad...
@emmanuelpraveen1 Жыл бұрын
Best explanation I found online What is impact? A 'force'. It displaces our head. So that is energy. And without a helmet, this energy is absorbed by our head. And it is distributed in many ways. On motion, it is converted to kinetic energy and lost through friction and broken bonds in our neck muscles. Remaining is just absorbed by the head alone. First, the skull takes a part of it. How? By breaking bonds in itself. This may crack your skull. Second, by transferring vibration to the cerebral fluid. Now the cerebral fluid, like any damper, in motorcycles, forms eddies and dissipates energy through damping. This creates a shock on our brain, and we lose balance. Now, for all this to happen, we need a helmet that can absorb this energy or at least significant parts of it. So, let's assume that it does absorb energy. How? Well, since energy is always conserved, it should be dissipated in some way. First, the hard shell. The shell absorbs energy and transfers it to the intermolecular bonds. After this transfer, many of the bonds break and dissipates the energy. Rest of the energy is transferred inside. There is a foam layer, which acts as a sponge/spring with damper. This absorbs energy and starts vibrating, while damping it. This damping effect dissipates the energy. That's why you hear a ringing sound when you knock on a helmet. It absorbs the energy and transfers it throughout. It does this so that the helmet doesn't form a weak spot. Now suppose your helmet doesn't break at all. Who takes all the energy? You. Then you die. Or seriously injured. Thus, if the helmet does break at substantial impacts, maybe okay. But, it should not break at lower impacts, because that can mean it absorbs only a less amount of energy. The rest is transferred, again, to the head.

I appreciate your efforts for a physical demonstration of impact on these helmets. The primary purpose of a helmet is to absorb the impact by itself & not by the head inside it. In that sense, a helmet breaking doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad helmet, it might just be good at absorbing impacts. Anyways, sophisticated testing would be needed to check how an impact affects the head inside it. Nevertheless, gread video dude!

The idea of a helmet is not just not to crack. That I’d say is the BARE minimum thing it is supposed to do for it to even be considered a helmet. What truly matters is how much energy it absorbs and how well it disperses or dissipates it, hence why HJC and likes are considered some of the best because the shell shatters upon impact dissipating the impact energy. Also why, these helmet shouldn’t ever be made to fall on the ground even, which could reduce their impact taking ability.
@TigerKoul3 жыл бұрын
Agreed
@leonbarua7712 Жыл бұрын
People thinking that the helmets which didnt crack are stronger.....remember that safer cars also crumple when they crash so the force is absorbed by the car body. In this case, the helmet should absorb the force hence breaking it. If the helmet stays stiff or bounces back, all of the force goes to our head which may not cause skull fracture but it will surely slosh ur brain around and may cause a concussion or internal bleeding which is far more serious. That's why some cheaper cars have been seen crashing into expensive cars and not breaking, the unsafe car will stay intact and dissipate the force onto the passengers..
@leonbarua77123 ай бұрын
@TimelyTurtle so you're telling me accidental impacts only happen in the front of the car? So the rest of the car should be completely rigid, transferring all the force to the passengers? Also, I didn't mention Indian Maruti suzuki cars anywhere, as you see. The crumple zone argument was given as a comparison to things absorbing force and getting destroyed in the process.

Helmet are intentionally designed to break/deform. The crumble zone absorbs and distributes impact over larger area. They are designed to work for single impact. Vega seems stronger but will transfer force to your head. See the deformation in slow mo, helmet doesn't break but you head inside will definitely.
@ferdous_khalifa Жыл бұрын
@@milaanpatel4997 Strongly disagree with your comment, Helmets are designed to protect the head from impact and absorb the force of a collision. They are engineered to withstand multiple impacts and not just single impact. The materials used in helmets, such as polystyrene, are specifically chosen for their ability to absorb and distribute impact energy. The "crumble zone" or "crush zone" of a helmet may deform, it should not break or compromise the structural integrity of the helmet. Thanks bro. I thought of buying SMK Titan series helmet. But after seeing your video, I am utterly disappointed with SMK and have changed my mind. Have never bought MT helmets before but now it's definitely worth giving it a try :) Bgv and Arai are on my next list of helmets, but they are very expensive so got to have patience and wait for that one fine day. Cheers and Thanks :))

Helmet breaking absorbs a lot of the impact. Cheap Vega helmet saved me once when a coconut fell on my head, the impact cracked the helmet and I blacked out for 1-2 sec but luckily regained consciousness before I crashed. If that helmet didn't crack then the entire impact would have been transferred to my head and neck. You can see from the slow motion replays those first 2 Vegas are not absorbing much impact, they simply transfer the energy down.

The helmet should break. Also this test should have been done with impact indicating stickers inside the helmets. A durable helmet may just transfer the impact to the riders head and cause fetal injuries ( the way the second helmet was deforming on impact). On the other hand if a helmet breaks dissipating the impact and not transferring the force to the head it is much better.
@TigerKoul3 жыл бұрын
Agreed whatever resources had used them And it's EPS which will dissipate the force and shell should remain intact again depends on the force and impact Correctly pointed out that second helmet was Vega Bolt which flexed a lot hence not safe
@kannadiga36443 жыл бұрын
That is true..
@sandeepssganguly3 жыл бұрын
@Tiger Koul thanks for validating that. I'll take my example when I was younger though a durable helmet is better. 15 years and 2 crashes later I have come to know that a helmet / safety gear is a consumable and should not be categorised under durable goods. These items have a defined end of life which many youngsters don't realise. It will be great to discuss various safety standards some day.

Shifter was shocking. But do you think it was due to the impact position being on the top front part of the helmet (above the inner visor cavity) as compared to other helmet impact positions (top rear). And do you think the inner visor cavity bew the eps and the shell caused it to break so easily?

That hammer is exerting a force much greater than the helmets designed impact limit per square cm area. Actual practice requires the helmet to be dropped with a ballast weight, not the other way round. Relative motion yes, but area of impact matters during testing. In reality, the impact area is much wider compared to the hammer impact zone. Anybody can use the sharp side of an object and inflict penetration into the shell, but not every road has sharp edges. I can say the helmets can survive, but I do not know about the skull of the rider wearing it. Ultimately If the EPS liner can't handle it, you dead bruh.

Cut him some slack bro. It's easier said than done. Ofcourse you can't consistently hit that heavy hammer on similar spot for all helmets, but it gives you a fair idea what different price points offer. Also, video could have been planned a bit better (showing impact after every hit) but he still did good, considering he wasted about 20k worth of helmets for this video just to show.
@TigerKoul2 жыл бұрын

@@VicariousxD I am not debating about effort and money spent. I am saying you cannot compare 2 helmets when one is hit in centre and other near the visor. The impact will be totally different. Also, showing internal damage of only helmets except Vega sparks something wrong. Why not show same internal view for all helmets just to give confidence to viewer of the video.
@googatuba2 жыл бұрын
Guys after an accident with Impacts like this, it would be best to replace the helmet as the structure of the helmet would have weakened during the impact with micro cracks that may not be visible to the naked eye. So in case of second impact the results would be drastic. Take care, Ride safe. EDIT. Just realized that Tiger Koul had mentioned this towards the end . Good stuff!

Sir, Thanks for the nice video. I am not an expert and my comments are my views. This kind of impact can only happen in scenarios like a construction site where a brick/cement block falls or when a big branch breaks off from a tree onto a person wearing helmet. Moreover if you observe carefully the impact is taken and transferred onto the concrete floor, where does this happen when the helmet is on the persons head , the full force will be on the person's upper head, with major injury. I am not sure if whacking the helmets with a base ball bat from the sides would be better simulation of a road accident. But thanks for the insights from this video. Real cool. All the best.
