Thank you! Just ordered a poly mallet from your site. Also enjoy the leather pieces I have purchased.

I still have the rawhide mallet that I bought from Kevin back in about 1980 at his store in Fargo ND

For tooling I have found that I love my Lixie brand bronze head hammer. I wrap a piece of 10 oz leather over the two faces of the hammer to prevent distortion of the bronze. It works perfectly for me and I make tooled belts so I do a lot of tooling. It just has the proper weight with no "bounce back" as Kevin calls it, but it's a dream to tool with and I have nerve damage so I have to hammer with my left hand.

This is good information but needs to go out more, such as difference in the plastics or poly. Most of all weight! What oz should you buy when stamping or slot punching and on and on! I would really like an answer to these questions and your vender should be able to answer! Thank you! Greg

Great video! VERY informative! One question though...I thought the reason to use a leather or plastic maul or hammer was to prevent damage to the end of the stamping tool shaft... Since a metal hammer would deform the stamping tool shaft over repeated contact, the leather or plastic maul or hammer wouldn't, hence less damage...??? Comments?

Unfortunately, it didn't cover : - the plastic dead blow hammer (as mentionned by landnut) - the copper hammer (a copper side + rawhide side hammer, like a Thor for example) - the rubber maul (no plastic/nylon)... it could be interesting for someone living in a apartment (less noise) But it was very interesting/informative. Thank you.

I started with a round maul, then tried to get the hammer kind, because i have so so much more experience using hammers.....but with leather work i greatly more like the maul type

You guys are the BEST at what you do.... but can I say that the ringing phones, the background chatter and conversations are so distracting... maybe film after hours? You have really solid, useful tutorials- and the video quality is great, but that background audio..... Ahhhhhhh! ahhhhhhh!!!!!!! makes me want to run with (leather cutting) scissors! You still get a thumbs up, but at least consider filming when others are not roaming around and talking in the background please... : )

I kinda like the hubub in the background, it seems like a nice place to spend one's working hours.

You should have gone over the the metal hammers more and there are several uses for a big hickory mallet and you can saw off the face to get rid of the worn out material just like a rawhide mallet. There is nothing like a poly hammer for carving. You won't get tired tooling large leather pieces.

It should work. You will just have to get the feel for how it works with the tools. Plus it might get heavy!

I’m not a mechanic. But I just bought a dead blow for, just like the video said, when I am doing letters etc. and do NOT want a bounce. Now I don’t use it for carving, it’s too heavy and no control for delicate work.

What in ear is a ‘wrong item’. Your comment has the most value if you include specifics as otherwise you could make that comment about any tool.

I can’t help but comment and say that this really Is not a good video. Obviously these two are not KZbin creators, but even calling a vinyl mallet a ‘plastic’ mallet is just wrong. Also there are clear pros and cons with different tools but these are not well explained. Unfortunate that means new leather workers should pass on this video and fine clearer and more complete info elsewhere.

Just to play devils advocate for fun… he’s not entirely wrong calling it “plastic” haha but I absolutely agree, this was clearly last minute set up.

I like the wooden mallet because it's lightweight and doesn't bother my wrist like the good quality ones.
