And that's the very reason i felt in love with a tarp. In Ireland it rains, it rains a lot.. and you don't get that many trees neither.. When it rains i set up my tarp and get to work with me hammock underneath. If it rains and i do not have any trees for my hammock i set up my tarp up on the walking sticks and set my tent insert (just floor and mesh walls with single entry) underneath. One way or the other i am sheltered and can camp :) No matter the weather, no matter the location i can do it. It's absolutely great :) Tarp, hammock, under quilt + over quilt that serves together as a sleeping bag as well, tent addon and an insulation matt and i can set up my camp anywhere and in any conditions :) And it does not take much more room or weight then a hammock or a tent setup alone neither :)

just remember there's lots of poison in railroad ties (and utility poles). the same stuff it is now illegal to treat building lumber with because it's actually harmful to people, which is how we ended up with the current green pressure treated, which can itself still be kind of nasty if you get a splinter off of one. I made the mistake of using a utility pole in place of a tree, and that tree strap smelled nasty for months afterwards. that was not a new pole, at least 10 years of growth around it. in other words don't let kids play on it, don't plant vegetables in soil retained by it, don't let people sit on it at parties

I was hanging in Benton Harbor ( east side of Lake Michigan) under my Superfly. No pole mod or spreader poles on. A howler of a storm came across the lake. I'm a Scoutmaster & I used to be the only hammocker in the Troop, but we had a campout last weekend & I had several Scouts and adults camping in hammocks. It was their very first time for some of them. One of my Scouts built a hammock villiage for his Eagle Scout project. As for modesty, it's a youth protection issue when it comes to Scouts, so it can be quite challenging when using tarps. Sometimes, you have to get creative, and you have to plan carefully. I'm like you, I like to see what's around me, I like a big tarp, Ridgeline as high as I can get it (I use my bike as a ladder to get it up high as I can reach from the top tube of the cargo bike leaning against the tree) in the winter I will pitch it steeper and lower, but as soon as I think the last winter storm has passed I raise that sucker up. I'm usually solo camping, but if there's other people around, I get dressed in the hammock. during mosquito season I usually have the bugnet zipped up anyhow

Hey, you gave a quote for the deck. That does not include a reward bonus of 1- Superior Trail 4 day leave, 2- a new hammock and tarp, 3-a new Bass guitar and amp. your home projects are no reason to purchase a custom made Mandolin. However, we all need motivation, you set the standard for dirt farmers. Cheers!

I'll buy a new bass with the cost of labor I saved us!!! Meg is cool with it. Dirt farming is rough trade!!!

Yep found out in recent years not all treated lumber is the same. Look at the label on end of the lumber, it says if it's "for ground contact". Infact there is a sprectrum of treated, but the two main ones you'll find at home centers: (UC3B) for higher than 6" from ground. And (UC4A) for ground contact. If course around me in SE PA the home centers don't have 2x4 with UC4A. This is WAY more complicated than it needs to be, and NOT well know like it should be. 😂😂

All my lumber is ground treated this go round. And I painted every cut edge with Pressure Treat Solution and used butyl tape on top of joists. It out to last until I'm 86...20 years from now.

Privacy was a big part of why I got a 12 foot tarp with doors that could go way down low near the ground, hiding my ugly mug and own particular shade of white meat from the group of friends out camping. But if I'm honest, it was more so to trick myself and get a false sense of security that no animals would come under my tarp while i'm out alone lol.

Hey Shug! I just watched your hammock hanging how to 10 parter. I have a question, but for some reason I can't comment in that series. It's been about 13 years since you recorded it. I Watched every one loved them... My question is how high off the ground do you tie your Ridgeline and your hammock? The video series was for noobs but that information was not in there, thanks on advance!!!
@shugemery4 ай бұрын
Really there is no set tarp ridgeline height. You have the ability to move it up or down whenever. But at a certain point you can only go so low as your hammock will get in the way. I usually tie my tarp off under my hammock suspension at the trees. Hey Shug! What are your feelings about all in one hammocks? I’ve been thinking of getting into hammocks but I’m lazy lol. Currently looking at a Hennessy hammock but wasn’t sure if there is better for a budget?

The One Wind Hammock system is inexpensive and I keep hearing good stuff about it. About $70 on amazon.
