And that's the very reason i felt in love with a tarp. In Ireland it rains, it rains a lot.. and you don't get that many trees neither.. When it rains i set up my tarp and get to work with me hammock underneath. If it rains and i do not have any trees for my hammock i set up my tarp up on the walking sticks and set my tent insert (just floor and mesh walls with single entry) underneath. One way or the other i am sheltered and can camp :) No matter the weather, no matter the location i can do it. It's absolutely great :) Tarp, hammock, under quilt + over quilt that serves together as a sleeping bag as well, tent addon and an insulation matt and i can set up my camp anywhere and in any conditions :) And it does not take much more room or weight then a hammock or a tent setup alone neither :)

Can't wait to see the Maple King! I had a similar deck project a few years ago. We planned on just replacing the boards. Ripped the old boards off to find basically no structure to the deck at all. No posts, basically just floating on the ground. A 1-2 weekend project turned into a two month project! But it was fun and I learned a ton.

Shug I gotta give you serious props for learning the bass at this point in life. I was fortunate to take it up as a kid when everything is easier to learn, I don’t see many with the dedication to stick with it in the midst of responsibilities adults have. Sounding great! Also I’ve been loving your videos for YEARS

I do play mandolin so had some finger dexterity but I was looking for a new musical adventure and wanted to be new again. I wake up looking forward to playing the bass every day. Being retired makes it even better. Playing bass is a bit like time travel for me. Going back and learning songs I grew up listening to. Been digging back into "Get Ready" by Rare Earth. Sorta learned it a while back but one needs to keep refining as the skills grow. Thankee for your goodly words.

I have been working on a dry shed that I thought would take a month. I started in March. and am just now putting up the roof beams. Hint for the wise: NEVER make a shed base from railroad ties unless they are absolutely without any twist. I will never do that again. Thanks for the video Shug!

@better.better
@better.better 4 ай бұрын
just remember there's lots of poison in railroad ties (and utility poles). the same stuff it is now illegal to treat building lumber with because it's actually harmful to people, which is how we ended up with the current green pressure treated, which can itself still be kind of nasty if you get a splinter off of one. I made the mistake of using a utility pole in place of a tree, and that tree strap smelled nasty for months afterwards. that was not a new pole, at least 10 years of growth around it. in other words don't let kids play on it, don't plant vegetables in soil retained by it, don't let people sit on it at parties

I was hanging in Benton Harbor ( east side of Lake Michigan) under my Superfly. No pole mod or spreader poles on. A howler of a storm came across the lake. I had the tarp pitched low and doors shut, had to put my hand out to keep the tarp away from the hammock a bit. No widow makers, I checked beforehand, but I was a bit freaked. Brandon’s tarp held up way better than my nerves! Thanks for the tarp talk. Edit. I’m your age and no one I know goes out and hangs in a hammock in the woods, so I go recluse myself.

A little 311 cover on the bass … sounded nice! There is nothing wrong about being a hermit. This past summer, I drove from the Atlanta area up through North and South Dakota, Idaho, and Utah. I loved driving through towns that had populations of 500 & 600 and not seeing other cars for 30 minutes at a stretch. It was VERY relaxing.
@shugemery
@shugemery 4 ай бұрын
It is actually a cover of "I Will Survive" by Cake. I'll have to look into 311...never heard of them. But the bass is taking to new places. I'd never heard of Cake until about 9 months. I remember driving in ND to Minot and did not pass a car for 30 minutes. Lonerville Proper!!!!

I fulltime hammock camp in my own backyard so I have a few tips as well: In summer I keep my sides up for any breeze I can get but i also like to be prepared for rain so i akways pitch my sides high to low to shed rain. So my sides are up but there's about a 2 foot drop from end to end. I also pitch my doors to block views from neighbors windows.

I'm a Scoutmaster & I used to be the only hammocker in the Troop, but we had a campout last weekend & I had several Scouts and adults camping in hammocks. It was their very first time for some of them. One of my Scouts built a hammock villiage for his Eagle Scout project. As for modesty, it's a youth protection issue when it comes to Scouts, so it can be quite challenging when using tarps. Sometimes, you have to get creative, and you have to plan carefully. I have learned to change clothes in my hammock, for one.

My favorite tarp is the dutchware wide rectangle, its 11.5' wide and those walls are huge. You can definitely get them low and you can close off doors if you want. Also that 11.5' width os so nice in porchmode. You can throw a party under it.

Hey Cuzin Kay. I think of you often. I know I need to get down to Enoree and see my family. Cousin Jon called me out of a blue about 7 months ago. We had a good chat. Sammy texts me often but to be honest I never knew him much when we used to visit but I feel I do now. Still see Enoree in my dreams. Hope you and Tom are doing well and good. I'm pleased to report that the fine folks at Adventure Hammock Systems (McLean Engineering) did me RIGHT when I needed to replace parts of my system that got stolen from a car burglary. They gave me free shipping on those replacement parts that I bought, so my ability to hammock off my rig is functional once again. And little by little (on my fixed income) I'm getting my gear built back up so I can resume doing what I really enjoy doing once again. It's been nearly two years since I've been able to go camping. I'm so ready for some swing time and reading while drinking coffee and eating food cooked over fire.

I'm like you, I like to see what's around me, I like a big tarp, Ridgeline as high as I can get it (I use my bike as a ladder to get it up high as I can reach from the top tube of the cargo bike leaning against the tree) in the winter I will pitch it steeper and lower, but as soon as I think the last winter storm has passed I raise that sucker up. I'm usually solo camping, but if there's other people around, I get dressed in the hammock. during mosquito season I usually have the bugnet zipped up anyhow

Yep found out in recent years not all treated lumber is the same. Look at the label on end of the lumber, it says if it's "for ground contact". Infact there is a sprectrum of treated, but the two main ones you'll find at home centers: (UC3B) for higher than 6" from ground. And (UC4A) for ground contact. If course around me in SE PA the home centers don't have 2x4 with UC4A. This is WAY more complicated than it needs to be, and NOT well know like it should be. 😂😂
@shugemery

All my lumber is ground treated this go round. And I painted every cut edge with Pressure Treat Solution and used butyl tape on top of joists. It out to last until I'm 86...20 years from now.

Privacy was a big part of why I got a 12 foot tarp with doors that could go way down low near the ground, hiding my ugly mug and own particular shade of white meat from the group of friends out camping. But if I'm honest, it was more so to trick myself and get a false sense of security that no animals would come under my tarp while i'm out alone lol.

Really there is no set tarp ridgeline height. You have the ability to move it up or down whenever. But at a certain point you can only go so low as your hammock will get in the way. I usually tie my tarp off under my hammock suspension at the trees.
