Hammocks (Spanish hamaca, borrowed from Taino and Arawak hamaka) are slings made of fabric, rope, or netting, suspended between two points, used for swinging, sleeping, or resting. - Wikipedia
Hammocks have been used for more than 800 years in Central America, South America and the Caribbean, providing a safe place for people to sleep, off the ground, away from snakes and other dangererous creatures. Christopher Columbus brought hammocks to Europe after discovering the “New World” in 1492. This form of bedding has subsequently been adapted for many different uses.
