I twin brother and I were teenagers in the 1950s and living in Munster Indiana. The I 94 freeway, then called the Eisenhower Expressway, was under construction for several years. A major portion of the freeway that passed through the northern part of Munster has been completed

But was not yet open to traffic because it wasn't finished. We were able to get on the empty freeway and ride our bicycles for miles and miles with no interference from freeway traffic. This was a fantastic experience and one that we will never forget.

I wish I could ride my bike on a freeway! But now it's just bumper to bumper to traffic wherever I go!
