The design of HAMMOND’s new flagship portable draws on the original B-3’s blueprints, capturing its sound and feel with unmatched accuracy and soul. Its patent-pending technologies include an all-new sound engine that combines modeling and sampling, and reproduces every nuance of the classic electro-mechanical tone wheel generator.

I am a long time Prog rocker in the style of say Emerson, Wakeman, & Lord. I was turned on to this axe by the Swanster himself! I have one with a Leslie 3300 and it kicks a$$! The real Leslie makes a big difference. I LOVE it! Gary is the man! This IS a Hammond in excelsis!

@2:15 He talks about the old Hammonds being "vintage" and things will go wrong with them. But, as an organ repairman, I have found that you can expect about 15 years, maximum life from any digital instrument. Then, as things start to go wrong, the factory has discontinued the model, and no longer supplies parts for it. This is particularly problematic when a proprietary chip or part goes bad, then the unit cannot be repaired. However, The Hammond Tonewheel Generator organ was built to last a lifetime. Sure, they require annual maintenance. Yes, they will require repair. But, almost every part you could ever need for an old Hammond is available. Parts that are not available new, or aftermarket, are available used. And, since those parts rarely break, so there is plenty available. I own two Hammonds built in 1937 and 1938. Sure, they have seen repairs, but both run as good as the day they were built. Can you say that anything built today will have that kind of longevity?

@@Denvermorgan2000 You have an ESQ-1 that's still running? You are a lucky man! I wish I never sold the one I had; Great synth. But, my Mirage died over fifteen year ago. Ensoniq built some great equipment, it would be interesting to know how many are still going. It's too bad they made a horrible engineering mistake that bankrupt them. IMHO, the earlier digital stuff, like the ESQ-1 or a DX-7 probably had a much better build quality.

I can't speak about the XK-5, but I am "lucky" enough to have the large Suzuki B3 (with pedals) and an original B3 in my studio and it's correct that they do not sound exactly the same. But they each have their edge. Every vintage Hammond sounds very slightly different, and mine is clunky and funky and I love it. But I also have many occasions to turn to the Suzuki B3 and when I'm in a hurry, appreciate its consistency, transpose, fine tuning, MIDI, effects loops, internal distortion effects, clean sounding tube free-standing Leslie etc. I am not Hammond player, but such players come through my studio sometimes, and they always find something to appreciate in my Suzuki Hammond, as well as the vintage B3 I try to keep running. If you are truly "lucky" enough to find a good old B3 that works well for under $3,000 then go ahead. But buy a truck and develop muscles. My Suzuki Hammond cost as much as a house. I also wish it was portable. The portable XK-5 - especially with a real Leslie, has to be a great idea for smaller studios, clubs, churches and the road. (I am not sponsored by Hammond or Suzuki). Price? You will pay double for the new Moog One. It all depends what you want.

I kind of want one for the contact system, but then that means getting the lower manual with the same updated contact system as well (even though the old XLK lower man works with this). Yes btw, all Hammond clones (XK and SK lines, etc) will need to parameters tweaked to the players liking and different setups (example: one setup for when coming out direct, one setup for when connected to a real leslie 122/etc). Thankfully, like the XK3 and more, Hammond gives you lots of parameters to tweak. Big kudos to them on that. Problem is the price imho. My old XK3 at $600 combined with a 122/etc still gets it done well when not using my real Hammonds. I even made my own lower manual for it giving me a 3rd db set and presets. Also made midi pedals out of a real 25note Hammond pedal. Complete rig on the cheap. If it could compete or better the others in price you would see a lot more folks switching to the XK5 I want one for the contact system (and new sound and onboard leslie) which does make a difference, but even then I'm not feeling the pricing. Then again, the Mojo sounds decent but I'm still not interested in buying that even at their lower price (controls on top don't allow for added keys above it, not simple to connect to real leslies, I'm not crazy about the leslie sim or overall sound, etc). The new Legend looks like a contender though, and even has the rocker tabs like the orig hammonds. Not sure about easy (real/tube/vintage) Leslie connection however.

Many of You wrote- sounds awful, digital...thats true- every hammonds-suzuki with digital tw sounds digital, its correct, normall, it should be like this. But there are many ways to make it closer to an old hammond organ. 1. turn off leslie simulator...use Old Leslie like 122, 145, 147, 251 and more..., not 3300 or small clones...they have no space enough! 2. replace tubes in xk5 to better which will response with old leslie 3. change many details in xk system, do it with a Leslie You will play... 4. here is one tip You can do- use an old ao28 from a hammond as a preamp.... XK5- ao28 preamp- tube Leslie speaker...its easy...than You will hear no difference... here is xk5 with leslie 770...its sounds so much better than that from demo... its everything easy, its very expensive? more expensive is make an old Hammond to perfect condition....of course its more beauty and realistic, but its more difficult, time spending and expensive

Man I’m really sorry but I’m not convinced with that demo, I've been playing Hammonds (and clones) for years and I can get a more authentic sound from a £50 VST (albeit using decent preamps, speaker sims, overdrive etc. plus many years of experience). When you play a REAL Hammond it’s like coming home! You think; Ah that’s what it’s all about - dirty, dynamic, raw and warm - sends shivers down your spine! This isn’t even close. Sorry to sound negative, I’m sure the XK-5 might sound better with some tweaking and playing to its strengths etc.

I run mine through a 31 band eq to help with that. I bump the lows and low mids to help with the thin sounding upper keyboard area and bump the mids a bit to give it a bit more tonewheel grind. I also use a low wattage amp for my leslie speakers and that makes it more syrupy. It isn't perfectly tonewheel but it sounds about 80% than stock and pretty damn good on its own as its own instrument

I'm not a huge fan of the Hammond clone wheel organs put out by Hammond. They sound too synthetic. The key click does not very between each key. Out of the box it needs a lot of work and time to set it up to sound halfway decent.

I've heard some other demos where this board sounds awesome, but it always seems to be paired with a real Leslie in said demos - a bit of a cheat if you're talking about a "portable" clonewheel - I mean, let's be honest, if we're playing a clone, it means we'll fairly often be playing WITHOUT the Leslie. The Viscount Legend demos sound FAR better in my opinion...

Go and hear one FIRST HAND! It is a must if you are going to make a serious comments... And I wish people would stop calling the Hammond a CLONE... You have your VINTAGE Hammond and your DIGITAL Hammond WITH the genuine company name on it. When you buy a new car of the same brand AND model you had in an earlier year, do you call that a clone? Didn't think so.. The president of Hammond USA stated that the digital Hammonds are a continuation .. OTHER brands making Hammond like organs are the REAL clones !

Except it's not the same company. The Hammond Organ Company went out of business in the mid-80s, then another company owned by a guy named Suzuki bought the name and started making clones. That's why the company is called Hammond-Suzuki now. Besides, when talking about organs the word clone is short for clonewheel, which just means the insturment clones the sound of a B3 using a digital recreation of the tonewheels and has nothing to do with cloning the form factor of the instrument. These new digital organs by Hammond-Suzuki do exactly that so they are, in fact, clones.

im always skeptical of digital remakes of legendary analog gear. Like don't get me wrong this sounds good asf. As with anything in the keyscape packs, the digital rompler mark 12 rhodes. I can't seem to find much of any analog keyboards other than synths that are manufactured in this decade and it's such a bummer. No clavinets, no more rhodes, no more organs. Just a whole buncha remakes and romplers built from these past giants. Wheres the tonewheels and just busload of pickups. One of the best experiences I've ever had was being able to play on a mark II rhodes and an original Hammond a few years ago and no digital keyboard has ever felt right or as organic as that. And the biggest upset to me is that these could very well kill innovation in keyboards altogether. Think of it though, all keyboards are romplers or digital engines of preexisting keyboards why not try and make a new one

I can think of several reasons: 1. They're heavy as heck, we're all getting older, and eventually knees, backs, and shoulders give out. I can't physically lift more than 55 lbs... after my rotator cuff tear in 2015.. had to sell my B-3... it was going to waste. 2. They're expensive to repair, and yes.... they will break down. Not a question of IF, but a question of WHEN. And all the great repairmen are either already dead, or in high demand and booked months in advance. 3. They're expensive to own and not everyone has that kind of loot laying around. The clones are a nice less expensive alternative to the real deal-- that to this 53 year old's tired worn out ears.... good enough is good enough. 4. Some people have kids who want to learn... and I'd rather see my kid taking a 16 pound xk1-c clone to his gig or school function, than try to get a bunch of his friends together to move a 350 pound b-3. It's just not safe. Not everyone is 6'2" 275.

These sounds are nowhere close to the tonal quality of a real tonewheel Hammond. You need to tweak the digital tonewheels in order to get rid of the screechings of the instrument. Also the percussion settings are not right. The Leslie simulation is horrible, far away from a Ventilator. Almost no improvement soundwise compared to the Hammond XK3c.

It is OK, but the last time I played an XK Hammond, it was so light that when I did a glissando, the keyboard nearly slid off the stand. It is way too light. Much of the B-3 is not just about the sound, but it is about the way the instrument lets me play. No thanks, but I'll take my 400 pound B-3 any day. Besides, the fake key click sounds that they program into the new "Hammonds" (actually Suzuki) are horrible. There is no way to digitally reproduce the authentic sound of the B-3 key click.

What bugs me is the tone is kind of hollow and synthetic sounding. On the tonewheel organs, even the mid and upper mid notes have bass and a rich midrange punch to them. The digital Hammonds kind of loses that. Only thing that bugs me. What are you gonna do? Spend 5 grand on a 500 pound tonewheel organ then move it into your apartment? Maybe later in life I'll own a nice real tonewheel A-100 or B-3.

What I actually did is got a nice Boss 10 band eq pedal to run it through. No joke. It pretty much solved the issue of the notes sounding hollow with just a click on top. I raised the upper lows and mids and it gave the notes some punch. Plus I raise the high to maintain the nice key click. And I lowered the very highest 12k slider to reduce the synthetic air sound. It was a huge improvement.

i am sorry but i am gonna disagree with you sir when you said that the vintage hammond is a vintage hammond and things are gonna go wrong with them. the reality things is that clone wheel organs would not sound like a real vintage hammond and things will really go wrong on a clonewheel hammond before things go wrong with a vintage hammond. take for instance in a lightning storm...a clonewheel organ can easily get fried if a lightning hits the transformer that the power of your house is fed from. a real hammond will stand that with no problem the vintage model A was produced by hammond in the mid 1930's and many still around sounding like new... can your clonewheel hammond last that many years the B3, the C3, the RT3 and the A100's that were produced in the mid 50's are still around... can your clonewheel last for more than 50 years? i don't thing so

WTH! I still want my money back from the XK3C! Yeah I still have buyers remorse after 10 years. And they want me to spit out almost 4k for this crap. The only way my XK3C sounds fairly decent is because I plucked the Chinese Tubes out of it and took the old vintage Tubes out of my vintage 60s B3 and stuck them in it. Then connect it to my vintage 145 leslie and had to tweak the tone wheels as well. Smh 👎👎
