Hampton Court is the oldest Tudor style palace in the United Kingdom.
With 25 hectares of 🤩beautiful gardens and lavish royal apartments, Hampton Court Palace impresses even the most seasoned travelers😳.
Initially built by Cardinal Thomas Wolsy, the palace became the favorite residence of the controversial King Henry VIII. It is impossible to name Henry VIII and not talk about his marriages. The king took marriage and family seriously, which is why he had wife after wife: he needed a male heir to shore up the fragile Tudor dynasty. All of Henry VIII's wives stayed in the luxurious apartments at Hampton Court. The only wife who did not benefit much from Hampton Palace was Anne of Cleves, because her marriage to Henry VIII simply did not last long.
Henry's first wife was Catherine, daughter of the powerful Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon. Catherine first married the Tudors' eldest son, Arthur, but he died just five months after their marriage. Suddenly, the Tudors' plans to have a strong alliance and retain the throne were blown up. Henry, the younger brother, decided to marry the widow and secure the dynasty. With Catherine of Aragon, Henry had a daughter, but not the longed-for son. While married to Catherine, Henry falls madly in love with Anne Boleyn. With much effort and political entanglements, Henry annulled his marriage to Catherine of Aragon and married Anne Boleyn.
She lived with the king at Hampton Court before he accused her of adultery and treason in 1536 and beheaded her in the Tower of London. Today, historians almost unanimously agree that all the accusations made against him were false. The king looked for an excuse to execute her, since she had not given him a son, but a daughter, the future Elizabeth I of England. Furthermore, the handsome Henry had begun to court Jane Seymour. Just 11 days after Anne Boleyn's execution, the monarch married his new love, Jane Seymour. With Jane he had the desired son and heir, Edward VI.
Edward was born at Hampton Court Palace on October 12, 1537. The king organized celebrations in cities and towns across the country. Tragically, celebrations turned to mourning when Jane Seymour died of an infection just twelve days after giving birth.
The fourth wife was Anne of Cleves. It was a disaster of a marriage made for foreign policy reasons. Almost everyone liked Anne of Cleves, except Henry. Their marriage, never consummated, was annulled after six months. Enrique and Ana remained friends.
Henry VIII, now 50 years old, marries his fifth wife, Catherine Howard, a beautiful and flirtatious 19-year-old girl. She was also accused of adultery and executed in the Tower of London. Perhaps Catherine was an adulteress in her attempt to become pregnant to give the King another male heir. At this time, Henry VIII was already elderly, obese, and in constant pain due to an injury caused in a jousting tournament. They say the ghost of Catherine Howard has been seen at Hampton Court.
The sixth and last wife of the monarch, she survived the marriage and Henry himself. Henry and Catherine Parr were married at Hampton Court, in a private chapel. She was a lively and cultured woman. She was the only English queen to write and publish her own books. Catherine survived her husband, who died in 1547. She did not mourn long, as she quickly remarried, but only 14 months later she died in childbirth at the age of 36.
