Proud Hampton alum who saw this team play in January or February 2001 when I was in graduate school at Howard. Then I saw them again in 2002 and 2003 at the MEAC Men's Championship in Richmond.

I remember this game like it was yesterday, but I forgot the Iowa state didn’t score one, not one single point for the last 7 minutes of the game. What a meltdown.

Oof! As an Iowa State fan who remembers watching this game (right after we were embarrassed in a double-digit upset against Baylor, the 8th seed, in the Big 12 tournament, after winning our second straight Big 12 season title and being defending Big 12 Tournament champions with an *almost identical* team as last season), that was not only absolutely brutal, but watching it back and seeing how many dumb mistakes were made the entire time makes it patently obvious the abuse we now know was going on behind-the-scenes! Even ignoring the travel by Shirley on the injury (on the first possession we had to begin that collapse), there's the next possession, where (despite only 5 and a half minutes to go, a 35 second shot clock, and *11 seconds* left on the shot clock), Shirley takes a *long* two, and then when Shane Power gets the rebound, *instead* of kicking it back out and eating up another 35 seconds of clock, he goes *right back* despite being double-team by two people *taller* than him, and gets his shot blocked and gifts Hampton the ball! Then there's the very next possession, with Rancik getting *his* shot blocked after only *15 seconds* of shot clock used on an absolutely laughable attempt at a "lay-in" a good 5 feet away from the basket. Then there's our next possession - the weak pass leading to an easy steal and score! Then there's another bad pass on the next possession leading to a turnover. Then there was a - yeah, I don't know what that was! Horton went airborn, and then, uh, did he try to pass it? What in the world was he trying to do there? Either way, he lost it and turned it over *again.* Then there's the next possession and Rancik's absolutely pathetic jump shot attempt that got *blocked* and the defender was able to *hold on* to the ball in mid-air and come down with it (for how weak that shot must've been, have someone stand two feet away from you and pass it to you unexpectedly. If you catch it with your bare hands - no help from your chest, arms, or any other body parts - then you're either superhuman or that was a *very* weak pass, let alone a shot. *That* happened here from a *shot* that was *inches* away! How weak was that shot? Wow)! And then there's that second-to-last possession (i.e., our last possession with the lead). Simply put, we're up 1, there's *36* seconds left, and we have a *full* 35 second shot clock in our favor! Simply put, once we get it into the front court, *all* we need to do at that point is *hold onto* it and force them to foul us (and if they can foul a guard, that's far better - though even our big men, Rancik and Shirley, are decent free throw shooters as well)! We *do* beat their press and get it into the front court, the ball goes to Tinsley, who *immediately shoots it!* What the actual *[bleep]?* Why in the world would you shoot it there?! Instead of forcing them to foul and killing as much clock as possible? That may be one of the dumbest decisions ever in any NCAA tournament game in the history of basketball! And yet, such mind-blowingly terrible play was basically nonstop that entire final 7 minutes (and common in Iowa State's two final games - both tournament upsets)! And yes, now that I'm older and have learned about how toxic workplaces can affect people I realize now that Eustachy's absolutely horrific abuse of his players and team (revealed almost two decades later - yes, even almost a decade and a half after he was busted for his alcoholism) indeed was what caused this! For our team (absolutely incredible all of the past two seasons) to be *that* terrible that it almost felt like we'd entered the Twilight Zone and/or Quantum Leap happened to our entire team and random research scientists who had never played basketball had inherited the bodies of our players, rampant abuse is basically the only explanation (at least, outside of the Quantum Leap thing)! XD XD XD Yes, the players now say that two consecutive years of his nonstop berating, screaming, gaslighting, and breaking things, even when they did everything *perfect* finally took its toll and they just wanted the season to be over and didn't care anymore (because their coach didn't seem to care! Even when they were perfect, their coach still treated them like they had failed! Even when the glass was *completely* full, the coach screamed at them demanding to know why the glass was *completely* empty! Like, what incentive is there at that point to try *at all?* Anyone who has ever had a boss who yells at you no matter what knows the feeling)! And yes, that final 7 minute stretch indeed proves it. That wasn't bad luck. That was indeed a full-on basketball meltdown akin to the actual behavioral meltdowns we now know Coach Eustachy was having nonstop behind-the-scenes! Short version: Thanks for mentioning this! Yes, even as an Iowa State fan, I couldn't agree more and glad that egomaniac is never welcome back here!

Do you think maybe Fairleigh Dickinson over Purdue gets moved up now? I personally think this upset is maybe top 10 at best but easily within the top 15. I barely put UMBC over FDU but I think there’s other 15 over 2s that are better than this one.

I find it crazy how they talked about the smaller schools getting better back in 2001 and how they can compete against bigger programs. That statement has not only aged well, but it feels like it’s been on steroids since 2010. Really feels like that after Butler made back to back championship game appearances the parity was really increasing. Nowadays it’s feeling like a 15 seed is bound to pull off an upset over a 2 seed and even make it to the Sweet 16 as there’s been 4 teams that have done that before out of the 11 to get out of the first round.

@mazdakmina9493
@mazdakmina9493 9 ай бұрын
@@ammonbakarri-o5524 So were Tinsley, Shirley, Horton, and Rancik that previous season. Also, Shane Power and Jake Sullivan had stepped up excellently to fill in what was lost after losing Fizer and Nurse. No, sadly, I think if Fizer and Nurse were still there that season, this (and what happened the week prior during the Big XII tournament first round, when 8th-seeded blew us out despite us losing only 2 Big XII games all season up until that point) likely still happens! Because as we now know (all but confirmed as of 2017, when he was finally essentially blackballed from coaching altogether), Eustachy was, for lack of a better way to describe it, the spawn of Satan behind-the-scenes! I'm not kidding! Players essentially say that even when they were perfect (in practice or in games), he'd yell at them, gaslight them, and berate them basically just because he felt like it (no wonder he was such a raging alcoholic - the scandal you probably *have* heard of as an Iowa State fan! Clearly, this guy was *incredibly* miserable *always)!* For anyone who has read A Series of Unfortunate events, everything Count Olaf (the literal embodiment of the world's worst forms of abuse) does when he's the childrens' guardian, Eustachy did behind-closed-doors! What we saw here was all of that finally breaking the players and them deciding they didn't care anymore and wanted the season to be over. Those last 7 minutes prove it. They not only don't score, but how they fail to is absolutely pathetic. Just dumb and unimaginable mistake after dumb and unimaginable mistake! Again, this from players who were some of the best in the nation up until those final two weeks! For a drop off *that* massive, something is almost *always* going on behind-the-scenes! Sadly, we now know what! And perhaps the best evidence of this may be the reaction of the players after the game (and after the Baylor game)! Look at how indifferent they look. They don't even seem to care! And sadly, that's because they probably didn't! At that moment, terrifyingly, the thoughts going through their heads likely went something like, "Oh thank God, it's finally over!" Thank God that disgusting POS of a coach is never welcome back on our campus again!

Sadly, according to Paul Shirley in his book, Tinsley was (likely) so emotionally tired and exhausted that he and all his other teammates (notice the endless barrage of embarrassing mistakes that lead up to that), including Shirley himself, were just done and wanted the season to be over as soon as possible. Shirley says in book about this game and the previous week's first round Big XII tournament blowout loss to Baylor (the 8th seed, after a season where Iowa State had lost only two conference games all season), "We lost because Larry Eustachy was tired of us, because we were tired of him, because we were all tired of each other." And to say that Eustachy was awful is an understatement. To say that he was a rabid egomaniac was an understatement. This guy *not only* broke eraser boards in front of players in the locker room, ]threw unopened soda cans against walls, called players highly profane names, berating players nonstop, throwing chairs, and punting basketballs. He often did all of that even when the team was *perfect!* A public example of this is *this* quote from Eustachy (about his own players) after the team won a game by *29 points* and started the game on a 14-0 and were up 30-9 with less than 7 minutes to go in the second half, "This group in the worst way lacks any presence at all of 'physicalness', of toughness, of gameness and of competitiveness!" Goodness gracious! Like, even when the glass was *completely full,* Eustachy was berating his players and demanding to know why the glass was completely empty! As someone who spent his entire life in Ames and is an Iowa State alum, I'm so glad this POS of a coach is never welcome back on campus ever again!

Man I forgot about how this game ended. All I remembered was Tinsley’s layup falling off and the coach’s reaction. Man Tinsley taking that floater when up 1 when Hampton had to foul was an awful decision. Better be a dunk or a wide-open layup if you’re not going to let yourself get fouled and shoot the FTs.
