The wild part is that in 2016 NDSU lost in the semifinal game. Had they won the semifinal game, NDSU would have played a team in the natty that they already beat by 28 points in the regular season. That would have been their 6th straight natty. In the 2020 c*vid spring season, NDSU was down by 4 points in the quarterfinal game and threw an incomplete pass in the endzone on 4th down with like 6 seconds left in the game. The team they almost beat ended up winning the natty. That would have been NDSU's 10th straight natty. In 2022 NDSU was about to go up 28-7 on South Dakota State in their regular season matchup before throwing an INT in the endzone on a gadget play. NDSU lost that gane 23-21 to SDSU. After that game NDSU lost close to half their starting roster to the transfer portal. Later that same season, NDSU lost to SDSU in the national championship game 44-21...That would have been NDSU's 11th straight natty. In 2023 NDSU lost the semifinal game in double overtime to Montana. That would have at very least been NDSU's 13th Natty appearance in a row... In 2010 (NDSU's 3rd year of playoff eligibility), NDSU lost an overtime on a missed call against the eventual national champions Eastern Washington. That would have been NDSU's 14th straight national championship game appearance Oh and in 2006 and 2007 (While NDSU was only 2 and 3 years removed from D2, they were already ranked #1 in the country and would have won 2 more national titles... NDSU has had only 5 losing seasons since 1960

It was a perfect play call for man coverage with no QB spy Spread out the defense with an empty backfield and run a QB draw. Once the ball is snapped, the DBs and safeties are all chasing a WR. The linebackers are doing the same basically. No one accounts for the QB.

I think they broke the golden rule of college playoff football-never be favored. College sports run on emotion and being the underdog is an advantage in the locker room. I was a little confused by that too. It seems like they were going all in on a block. Which seems kind of weird though because a block is so chaotic, you have no idea where the ball would go even if you can get the block and if you may be fully surrounded even if you can get the ball. I feel like having a punt returner back and just assuming you have to go hook and lateral would have been their best shot in that position.

NDSU almost beat Colorado with 2 of their All-Americans out with injuries...and NDSU was up by 11 on USD and had a complete meltdown in the secondary and gave up 2 quick TDs to lose by 1 point. if NDSU plays USD 10 times this year, they win 9 out of 10 times

I don't know what to think about Montana St not having someone back to return the punt. I can understand trying to block the punt, but that's putting all your eggs in one basket because if you don't block it, it's over. If they had someone back to return, they still would've had a chance to block it, or they could've returned it for a touchdown, or they could've called a fair catch and gotten one more play.

I know right, it kind of reminds me of having a empty net in hockey and it usually doesn't work.

@@nickhill8612 At least there are situations where having an empty net improves your odds, even if they're still not very good. I just don't think having an 11th guy to block improves your odds to win by blocking enough to compensate for the fact that it eliminates your odds of winning by returning the kick for a touchdown or getting another play on offense.
