Nice product, great video. Been waiting for one of these Chinese manufacturers to come out with a mobile radio in uhf/vhf that included ssb. A ht unit with ssb would be lot of fun to. 73 N2SCD

The button is labeled AREA because it toggles the A and B areas as the primary area on the display. This is noted on page 29 of the manual. It makes a lot more sense than labeling the button "BAND", which is what some other Wouxun and Baofeng radios do, because on a dual display radio, when both sides are using the same band, you aren't necessarily changing the band, you're changing the primary side or area of the radio that you will be working on. There are actually two menus in the radio, one accessible on a short press, the other on a long press. Also, the PTT isn't backward, it's configured to default to the one marked PTT I as the lower primary area and the upper PTT II as the secondary area. However, like the three programmable function buttons, both PTT buttons can be programmed to operate the other way around, as well as perform other functions, such as transmitting to a specific call group. All of this and more is explained in the manual.

"Area" is something that hasn't been used before, not that I have seen. It is a strange term. While I agree with your assessment of the word "band" calling it "main and sub" like Anytone does would be much more logical. The PTT is indeed backwards if the bottom PTT keys-up the top band on the radio, and the top PTT keys up the bottom band on the radio. Sorry, "area" on the radio. But yes, of course these can be programmed in the menus. Many buttons can always be programmed and rearranged in menus, this isn't a new thing - it is actually quite common on many radios.

I ordered one and it is due to be here Monday (7/17/23). Thx for the power review. I've seen one or two other KZbin reviews where spurious emissions seemed marginally close to "out of spec". If you have the capability to monitor/record spurious emissions, that might be a good topic to cover for this model. I looked up Signal Stuff and will get one of their triband antennas when released. As always, I enjoy your enthusiastic attitude & will stay tuned for more reviews.

The spurious emissions is something that BTWR and Wouxun are working on together, and will be correcting in a later model, I am told.

@@HamRadio2 An update. I contacted BTWR & they said I could return my radio for testing. I did. It failed. They immediately refunded my money in full as they didn't have a fix right then and didn't want to hold up my $ until a fix was available. Kudos to BTWR for their honesty! I'll monitor & re-buy from them once this issue is resolved.

Diamond SRH999 is a quad band, but instead of 220 its 1200Mhz. 2M 6M and 70cm are there though.

I’m quite curious as to getting one of these radios, but sub 2w on 220MHz? Oof. 70cm, 1.25m, 2m, and 6m on an HT is awesome. But I have to agree with you, Jason, dual antennas is kind of… eh? A tri-band antenna should be enough, and working 6m with that wouldn’t be as efficient, but would be okay I’m guessing. Josh reviewed the first iteration of this and reported spurious emissions - but newer models DID fix this issue, so no worries there. I’m curious to get one of these, now. I just hope they fix the 2w power issue on 1.25m. Cheers and 73, KF0QNM ❤

I'd be curious to know. How far you could talk with two of those radios. Some range test on 6 M would be interesting. What would be real interesting. If Wouxun comes out with a quad band mobile.

Longest 6M Contact I've made is with my Yeasu VX-7R using it's stock antenna with the 6M Screw-On addition on top of the rubber duck (on 5W High Transmit Power) was from Warsaw New York to Cobourg Ontario. Given I was on the top of the hill in the State Park, but that was roughly a 80-85 Mile Line-of-Sight QSO. If you paired any 6M HT with a portable ladder line slim jim style antenna that you string up 15 feet into a tree with a 25' coax cable. It's possible (from my experience) to get almost 150 miles out.
@ChrisRobinsonKF6NFW
@ChrisRobinsonKF6NFW Жыл бұрын
@@LordTimelord thats also about my experience with the VX-7R. I use 6 meters alot here on West coast when hiking. HT to HT it is limited range especially on FM. Of course I also use 2meters as the main backup when we need to switch over to something a little more capable of reaching out and to a larger population. I also use Kenwood Commercial radios in the 47MHz range with Red Cross. Our HTs are only good for about a 1/4mile with rubber ducks for same reasons.

One of the things that really make Wouxun stand out from most of the lower-cost Chinese HT transceivers is their superheterodyne receivers. I am so disgusted with the lack of selectivity of cheap SDR or 'direct conversion' receivers. They are just about useless in an RF-rich environment as their limited (or non-existent) front-end filtering allows almost any signal in any band to open the squelch. At $220, I wouldn't call this radio cheap by any standard, but it sits at a reasonable price point.

@@HamRadio2 Wouxun (and Buy Two Way Radios) should lead with that (as a headline banner!) because that is a huge marketing distinction from the onslaught of cheap SDR radios currently being sold. Even Yaesu and Alinco have jumped on the SDR bandwagon in a pitiful attempt to grab some of the market of cheap SDR transceivers. I've learned that if the data sheet lacks a specification for selectivity, it means it sucks and you look elsewhere.

Two antennas in this band doesn't seem like a huge deal to me, especially considering Yeasu's solution when they made quad-band units in the past was to make a three-part duck where if you lost a piece you had poor SWR on 6m/1.25m Tempted to grab one of these when they're back in stock based on your review as well.

I know and understand that these HTs are not scanners. However, they do scan, but the ones I've seen do it poorly. I would like to see this 'feature' reviewed more closely. The two scanning functions I'd like to see evaluated are scanning speed (channels/sec) and squelch tail. Scanning at 2-3 channels per second is just about useless and having a loud extended squelch tail every time the scanner stops is downright exhausting.
@HamRadio2
@HamRadio2 Жыл бұрын
Yeah some people really want fast scanning - I don't get it. Honestly, I don't care how fast it does or doesn't scan - if you want fast scanning, get a scanner. This is a transceiver and although some scan faster than others, no transceiver is ever going to scan as fast as a scanner.
@g-whiz286
@g-whiz286 Жыл бұрын
@@HamRadio2 I heard the same argument when they started putting cameras in cell phones, "if you want to take pictures, get a camera". Same thing with GPS. "If you want GPS, then get a GPS receiver". The point here is to easily carry and combine desired technologies to lighten the load. There is no reason (technically) why a transceiver can't be designed to have better scanner performance. Sure, it may add a little cost, but if consumers want it, the Chinese will be happy to sell it.
@HamRadio2
@HamRadio2 Жыл бұрын
If you don't mind paying a little more, then get a Japanese radio that is better quality and has faster scanning. There are options available for what you are wanting - but that doesn't mean that every new radio should focus on those same features that only a small number of users want.

It would be funny to open up one of these radios (physically, not MARS-like) and find a Motorola Micor squelch chip inside (hogging up the PCB.) 50 years ago /\/\ became famous with that chip inside repeater receivers. When hearing signals above a certain strength threshold, the squelch tail was barely there. Below that threshold (maybe equivalent to ~12 dB SINAD) the squelch tail was appreciably longer, maybe 300 msec. It provided a quick & dirty way to know how well you were getting into the machine. Now *that* was a "real radio!"

I don't know why 220 always gets treated like a redheaded stepchild. The poor band never gets any respect. When they add 220 capability, it seems as if it's an afterthought. As if they have a power amp optimized for 2 meters, but force it to operate at 220 so they can say it's also a 220 radio.
