Just a note on IP ratings. The less than one meter is the deal. Remember the phone add with it in a glass of water? IPX7. If they don't specifically tell you the test method take it with a grain of salt hopefully without the water. It may be full one meter and at normal pressure which is great. The first number is dust/particulate ingress and the second is resistance to moisture. IP-6X is fine dust under some pressure like high winds. Your laptop is around IP 54 for example. Not all but decent ones.

I suspect that some of the enhancements that are obviously just in software will make it on to the Ft3D such as the short touch/long touch frequency/channel selection. If I didn't already have the FT3D, I would buy one but it's not worth the cost of uipgrading to me, even if I sold/traded in the FT3D. One day, something will come along that really excites me - maybe a new Kenwood portable to replace my D74!

I'm new to Amatuer Ham Radio and looking to energise and microwave my brain cells as I approach early retirement. 😀 I am starting to work towards self teaching myself the UK Foundation Licence (OFCOM, I believe the USA equiv is Tech Licence). I have a heavy IT background so getting my head around tech and studying won't be an issue. I have for many years owned an AOR 8200 and a Sony ICF-SW55 (with uprated caps) scanners and with my expanded free time was looking at the Yaesu FT-3DR but happy to fork out extra for the incredible Yaesu FT-5DR... with the myriad of chinese knock offs and clones being pushed out on Jungle Net and Genie Websites I'm going to support local reputable dealerships for protection and piece of mind. Any thoughts ? Yes pricey but thats what quality costs these days.

I've looked online and I haven't found anything on this issue, or anything in the manual. I was hoping someone would have insight on this but I no reviews talk about it, it seems to work straight out of the box for most reviewers. 73s

IPX7 actually means that it’s waterproof but not dust proof. IP67 means level 6 of dust proof and 7 of waterproof.
@awesomedn3 жыл бұрын
You’re absolutely correct about this. First digit is about dust ingress protection, second digit is about water ingress protection. IPx7 provides the same level of water protection as ip67, but does not provide dust protection at all.

@christopherwalsh77003 жыл бұрын
You are incorrect about the IPX7 rating. The 7 is the level of water resistance but the X or 6 in IP67 is a level of dust resistance. The X signifies that it is not rated for dust resistance. IP67 is better than IPX7
@AtomicArcherGuy Жыл бұрын
Isn’t that a moot point when your water ingress level rating is a 7 already? I mean, I’m getting one of these in a week or two depending on how the shipping goes, and I don’t really feel too worried about dunking it in a bucket of silty water any more than I would with a bucket of spring water. Do you think it’ll make any difference at all? I’m skeptical, let me know if there’s any reason to worry about that x vs 6 rating at a water ingress protection level of 7; Id like to know if there’s a real concern for brining this to a very dusty location (I’m in the Canadian army, I’m exposed to a lot of this environment).

Got a test for you. Just saw a one minute video that shows if you put a FM (broadcast) station in memory and the scan stops on that station you can't use the dial to turn off of that memory channel. The vast majority of reflectors, talk groups, and rooms, maybe 99%, are inactive most of the time. There are hundreds or thousands of the network nodes. With my OpenSpot4 Pro, I monitor RCF030/C, otherwise known as 30 Charlie because it is frequently mentioned on KZbin videos. Could you create a list of about 10 to 12 popular and active reflectors, talk groups, and rooms for D-Star, DMR, and YSF? This would make it easier for the newcomers to digital ham radio to start listening to active network nodes, rather than attempting to find nodes that are more popular and active.

I am looking for a radio that has reliable and functional hands free Bluetooth capability for paragliding. Anyone have a radio who could comment on how well the Bluetooth works on the FT5DR?
@daledervin36723 жыл бұрын
This review, like every other except HRCC completely ignored the fact this radio has a scanning change unseen in any ham radio for at least 35 years. The FT5 was designed to scan like a dumb-downed EMCOMM or commercial radio, which IS NOT THE TARGET MARKET. Have fun cranking and cranking the tuning knob through your entire memory list to select one you want to call on.
@MichaelRandazzophotoguy3 жыл бұрын
The people getting upset about the scanning feature puzzle me. Do you actually read the numbers as they fly by? Really it stops on the channel when it picks up a signal. Then you can look and see what channel you are on. Do you sit and stare at the radio while it's scanning?
@HamRadio23 жыл бұрын
Scanning is kinda a waste of time, which is why I rarely talk about it. Who cares?
@daledervin36723 жыл бұрын
@@HamRadio2 You must not be active on many repeaters. Scanning is NOT only for finding busy signals, it is a highly useful, fast way to get a radio to another repeater among a large memory list. Invariably over time, you meet people who hang out only on certain repeaters. Instead of waiting for a busy signal from them, maybe they are just hanging out monitoring, which means you need to call them. If you know your list, you get to know where a particular repeater memory is, and you can see it fly by and stop the scan and go back a few knob clicks or mic up or down button presses to it. With that in mind, I organize my memories from most-used to least-used. Mobiles do this for a reason as well. The FT5 WITHOUT that ability will make everyone either have to crank the knob through the whole list of memories or frequencies, or memorize "channel numbers" for direct entry. Think about how you use a mobile- do you crank the knob every time to another repeater, or do you let the radio do the work for you? It's ALWAYS faster to let the radio cycle- even if you have to go back a few to the memory or frequency you want, than cranking the knob. This is basic, fundamental operational functionality that this radio obliterates. At least it should have been included as an option, but "No". Over time, you will find yourself cranking through your memory list to call people on different repeaters, or go to different nets and so on. You will understand that the FT5 design is the dumbest most useless design FOR THE HAM USER in 35 years. Oh, but wait- Kruk stated this was designed for EMCOMM and commercial users. HUH? EMCOMM and commercial users use radios as tools for a very short list of frequencies- they ARE NOT ham users where every major city has multitudes of repeaters to put in memories.
@HamRadio23 жыл бұрын
@@daledervin3672 Quite the contrary, most of the repeaters in this area are active and setting a scan list up only makes it frustrating when listening to the scan stop on every frequency. I know that lots of people like scan, I don't see a problem with that. I just don't think getting upset about a feature that only some care about is helpful.
@daledervin36723 жыл бұрын
Think about a common hamfest scenario- you have minimalist oldster buddies who are on site roaming around talking on a couple simplex freqs on older HT's without "Group" capability, other friends heading in from across the state that can't hit the talk in repeater yet, but are on a wide area system you CAN hit, and you may want to talk to others still at the hotel or breakfast on another local repeater. Are you always waiting for others to initiate a QSO for the FT5 to "find a busy signal"? No, you may want to be the person to initiate some communication to see where everyone is, yet your shiny new FT5 is gonna make you crank through memories, or God forbid, the VFO. Everyone needs to think BEYOND SCANNING FOR BUSY SIGNALS. The FT5 has cut out HALF the usability we as hams have been able to use for decades.

The biggest difference between the 5D and the 3D that nobody talks about is the fact that the US version of the 5D gives you absolutely no indication that it is charging when it's powered down. If you hold it up to the sun you can see that the LCD is rendering a fake bar graph animation which does not reflect actual power level in any way but it doesn't kick the backlight on so you can actually see this happening. Charging is also slow as balls so you have to buy an aftermarket cradle if you want to send a more appropriate 12V into the cells. Why they decided to make a 10.5V wall wart that is so anemic they can't even drive an LED is beyond me. That cannot possibly be a Covid supply chain issue. I'd also love to see a Yaesu employee extract a MicroSD card from the 5D without tweezers. I have tiny hands and it is fundamentally impossible to grip after ejecting.

That was 22 minutes of my life I will never get back. Go back to your AnyTone DMR radio and leave the Yaesu radios to people who know what they are talking about.

@@HamRadio2 This is the first time that I've ever heard that C4FM and DMR are the same thing. Ever since these modes came out I've been told that they weren't compatible. @HamRadio23 жыл бұрын
They aren't the same thing and are therefore not compatible. I have explained this in greater detail in some other videos, but here is a high-level overview. The term "C4FM" is actually wrong when talking about Fusion. That is what everyone calls it, but it isn't technically correct. Both DMR and Fusion are C4FM modulation, but have different protocol 'buckets'. DMR is TDMA while Fusion is FDMA. When people come around the channel and start crying about DMR, and how "C4FM" is better, I can immediately tell that they haven't actually done their research and they are just trying to stir up trouble.
