It's funny that a lot of hams will ask "Why use internet radio if you have a phone in your pocket?" Forgetting that a lot of the danger to our hobby comes from the opinion "Why use ham radio if you have a phone in your pocket?"

I've seen reports from many users that the use of the external antenna causes the overload leading to the interference of strong local stations (KFI) when you were trying to listen to WWV. Perhaps step outside with only the telescoping antenna and recheck some shortwave freqs. I'm really enjoying mine, had for 3 weeks and two firmware upgrades. Current version as of 9/19/24 is 4.6. The MW broadcast band is the weakest link in my opinion. I've found the FM performance very good. Loving the internet capability!

I'll say it for you "it's junk" Thanks for the review.
@joshuagardner894Ай бұрын
FYI, the most recent firmware update turns this into a full coverage receiver, able to cover up to 30 Mhz in shortwave. As to picking up KFI over WWV, I dont know that your antenna setup isnt causing problems, using splitters has always done weird things for me. I would recommend picking up a simple L shaped female to male mono so you arent using a splitter.

Your picking up hetrodyne possibly from the FM band. Mine does the same according to what antenna on shortwave. It's not filtering out the fm with the antenna your using.

I have 9 friends who own this radio, none of them have issues connecting to any network. I don't own this radio, but one thing I like about it, is the fact that Choyong constantly releases updates, and is very active answering questions on social media (including KZbin)

I thought the idea of a radio is not being tied to the internet, in a survivalist mode. Furthermore this radio has limited bandwidth, unlike other SW radios with 1800kHz to 30MHz range. If you want internet radio, you can just stay with your smart phone!

That radio is not ready for prime time, especially for the price. The external antenna jack placement and the lack of selectivity is a hard no for me. If I want to stream, I use my Ocean Digital which is a great internet radio. Cheers

I recently purchased the Choyong LC 90 that is performing poorly on the mw band even though I updated to firmware 4.6. I am using the outdoor mode for my outdoor am loop. Support has told me to try the LC 90 outdoors in outdoor mode. Would the trek am loop work with the LC 90 ?
@KarlDahlquistАй бұрын
the MW is pretty poor. It is better to turn off the WIFI when listening to MW or shortwave, and being outside with a longwire attached. I like the FM and internet stations, I have already added 50 more station streams to my favorites.

Why the heck does a radio need a firmware upgrade? It searches for channels but a firmware upgrade for fm and am? I Know the old radio still work today? Is this has to do with dab+?
@HamRadioCrashCourseАй бұрын
Newer radios generally have FPGAs or other computing bodies, hence the need for firmware.

@@HamRadioCrashCourse thanks for sharing this im gonna check this on the internet, what is the use of this fpgas? Some dab+? Or what cause we all know radios run on mhz wich means fm and am have channels signals

This may be a bit off topic but I have a small problem that possibly you or some of your audience may have knowledge of. I am just trying to get back on the air after 13or so years of inactivity due to a condo that has rules against using ham or CB equipment. I know I could have taken them to court and PROBABLY have beaten them even if they claim it is a deed restriction. But did not go that route because all of my neighbors would have hated me because a law suit and lawyer would be an excuse to rase the condo fees even if I am totally within my rights. But now I am getting ready to sell my condo and set up my equipment in an RV. But I found an od little radio I can find nowhere on the web and I would like to get a manual before even firing it up to see if it works. Not even sure if it was a gift by someone or maybe a silent key garage sale???? It's an Alinco DK-MC 3 SX. Anyone know anything about it or how to find a manual for it?

You don’t need to pay more than a $100 for a radio to listen to news. Heck a $10 radio will still let you listen to depressing news. News will not change even if you have an expensive radio. And news from around the world is even more depressing than our local news. Listening to good music just requires a pair of good bluetooth speakers. That said it’s still fun to fiddle around with a like old fashioned radio. Enjoy a little of an era gone by.
