I've been using Raspberry Pi devices for a while now on individual projects on the channel and I thought it would be fitting to step back a level and help people get started with Raspberry Pi on their own and begin experimenting with this awesome device.

I haven't read through the comments, so forgive me if this was osted already. One of the first things you want to do in raspi-config is expand the filesystem. Otherwise, you're wasting a good chunk of your Micro SD Card.

apt does not replace apt-get. apt is "friendlier" but apt-get can do more stuff. Now, most people don't need that more stuff, so if apt works for you, go for it, but if you are having trouble getting something done with apt, apt-get will probably take care of your problem.

I use my Pi3 and fldigi on my 857d both at home and field day. The only problem is running the monitor. That 7" screen is just too small for my old eyes! One 12v battery runs the pi (buck? takes 12v and makes it 5v @ 2.5amps) and the radio and I WILL figure out how to make it run a small monitor.

Mostly dead air on local analog repeaters. I can pick up DMR from a repeater 11 miles away but until I get my DMR number won't be able to know for sure I can hit it with a 28 inch antenna on my TYT MD 380 UV 380 GPS. Yes I am using a bogus DMR id for testing programming but would never key up on analog or digital until my call sign post and I can do it legally.

I had huge frustration just getting into the pi the first time! I had no screen no nothing just my computer and phone? I had to connect an Ethernet cable in to it from my laptop and add a ssh text file to the SD card so I could get into it with putty from the laptop. I was kind of a pain finding it on the desktop in the network settings just so I could find the ip and type RaspberryPi.local in the PUTTY box to get in. I don't think I am remembering it correctly but it took lots of KZbin videos. Think I had to also find the ip of the Pi as well.

A Few Pointers.. If doing this from Windows.. No need for keyboard / display or PUTTY to set it up When you create the image on your SD Card click on it in Explorer/File Manager so you can see the files on the SD Card right click on the window... New > Text file called "ssh" now eject the SD Card and put it in your PI and power it on. Now click your WIN/Windows Key... type CMD, when it appears, right click "Run As Administrator" O.K security pop-up. You can now > ssh pi@ (No Need for PUTTY) password is raspberry. You can then > raspi-config Enable VNC, Set Display Resolution >> Finish / Save and then Exit You are now good to go with VNC and no need for keyboard or display on the PI

All these people that say apt-get is old and being replaced with apt ... Ummm no. Apt is a front end for the package manager - it uses apt-get. You can still use it directly. I do out of habit. And for those that are whining about Linux being hard ... apt-get install kde-full :D :D I doubt it's available in Pi .

I am looking for a case that will work with a 12 vdc power hat. What is I need is portable power for outdoors portable setup. I did find a couple of hats but none that will work with the Pi 4. The only other thing I can find is a 5 amp buck converter that will take 12 vdc and drop it to 5 vdc and then I also found a C type pigtail. Is there a setup you have found for this?

The penetration tester who is catching the wpa handshakes and running dictionary attacks is very time consuming for bulk standard isp password because the dictionary is 1TB+ according to crunch. Also he would have far better luck with reaver cracking WPS pin with reaver because the router gives you the first 4 digits and you just have to crack the last 4. Because let’s face it who changers their wifi password?

In short it’s a small computer that controls the radio. The computer runs software that sends data as tones to the radio to be transmitted. Those tones are picked up by other radio operators over the air. The computer has a multitude of applications to do specific things when interfacing to different radios.

You should say that you are an Amazon affiliate, not associate. Unless of course you are an Employee that works for Amazon. In which case you really would be an Amazon associate. On the otherhand, if you participate in any way, in certain activities that Amazon has been accused of, the term according to Black's law dictionary would be accomplice. But I trust that doesn't apply in any way to you. d;^}

@dmkays

@@HamRadioCrashCourse To be honest, the latter. We used to be called employees. Then in the late 1970s large corporations started busting up the unions. They wanted to convince their workforce that they had the best interest of the workers at heart, because we are all one big family. Employee sounded too impersonal, so we are no longer employees. We are associates. I made the assumption that still held true. However, when I read your reply, I decided to look it up. I most humbly admit that I just learned something new from you. Amazon had a stroke of genious. On the Amazon affiliates website I saw the new affiliates 'Associates program'. Amazon has been making money like crazy through their affiliates. They have saved billions in advertising. Instead, affiliates build all the websites. Affiliates write favorable reviews. Affiliates create all of the promotional videos, and affiliates influence the masses to buy their products from Amazon. But suddenly, many associates become discontent. Amazon sells the product for full retail. Almost in some cases, and much more in others. Affiliates bring in the sale, while Amazon gives them 'Up to 10 percent in commission. The affiliate knows other salesmen who make 15, 20 or even 25 percent. Amazon decides, we tell employees they are family. We call them more than family. They are our associates. And they become happy employees. Well, if it worked for them, let's give our affiliates a great big hug and call them family too. "You too are our associates, and you work for us". You get a new word and the same measly 10 percent. No medical, and no compensation for your expenses. This is all just my belief and my opinion. Am I at all close to the truth? Am I in the ballpark? Or am I out to lunch?
