Tidradio H8 - TD-H8 - UPDATE! Sales Halted! Why?

HAM RADIO DUDE

HAM RADIO DUDE

Жыл бұрын

Sales have been halted on the Tidradio H8 TD-H8 GMRS / Ham radio. Sales are expected to resume in 6 weeks.
In this episdoe I discuss some of the things I have advised have been fixed and some additional concerns regarding this radio and the ODmaster software.
For the record: I think Tidradios has a potential future as a company which will have great and interesting products. I understand some people are upset and I won't change that. What I hope to do is help Tidradios see what I believe other radio operators would see as issues and concerns. These can be addressed and Tidradios can do well.

I am a completely new entrant to this hobby. As such, I have watched a million KZbin videos on all kinds of radios and technical areas from content creators whose presentation skills vary widely. I do not have access to or the knowledge to operate testing equipment. I appreciate both your obvious technical expertise AND your presentation, even though I don't totally understand everything you say--you, after all, are the expert. When I saw your detailed explanation of the previous video, I went and watched it...I was shocked (well, not really) that a Chinese company would do that. I retired from a federal regulatory enforcement agency in 2011, so following the rules is important to me. While I am looking for my first handheld radio to buy, having your input is critical. Thank you.

I appreciate it. I am just a normal dude who's collected equipment over the years (Since my start in the early 2000's at the Wireless Internet companies). I don't know much, but I like to learn and help. When I do put out information, I feel confident enough to get it out there and usually within the community, there are some good people where if something is off, we'll work on getting it corrected so we all learn (with no hostility). It's great. Take care!

The "purity" on my (3 month old Preproduction unit) is not as bad as yours, but GMRS users dont care about that anyway.. But the power-output on the low setting is so low it wont even register on my meter.. Mid is 6W and high is 9.7W... we'll see if thats fixable via a firmware update.. My up/down button issue was resolved via a firmware update pushed via Bluetooth from my phone.

Thanks for the info on your findings. I got some firmware on there today for the GMRS up/down is correct. Can you test one thing? Try to program 462.575 (channel 24) in channel 31. Does it transmit for you? Channel 24 still does but 31 won't. Another individual (Billy) in some of the comments brought that up and I can replicate it.

You are probably on the right track as to what will happen concerning the FCC cert and the current stock of radios. These $40 or a 4 pack for $90ish radios are very tempting. I mean look at the amount of radios that can be had for the price of one good quality radio? I'm a sucker for a cheap radio, but the collection of unused radios is growing. Just lost a 22 year old Icom mobile, RIP and am looking for a replacement. There are a ton of $130 dualbanders out there, but I'm thinking a Yaesu is in order.

Dude thumbs up! But, this is not the only radio that does strange things. I just had an experience with a pretty old radio, that was made by a very admired brand (which sounds almost like wazoo... =D) and it does transmit on frequencies that it shouldn't, and it's so old that it's probably will be out of commission in a few years, and sure FCC approved very long time ago. So, I am not surprised... =D

Tip: Don't buy a new model in the first year from any new Chinese manufacturer/re-brander. Be prepared to send it back if spurious emissions exceed legal limits, because that also means they'll fail the manufacturer's advertised specs by a wide margin. If enough people did this, they'd stop selling junk.

Speaking of Retevis, have you tested their RHD-771 antennas? These antennas are a heavier stock than other antennas. (I'm now using Signal.Sticks) I'm just curious about the Retevis, which I think comes with the Tidradio H8. Oh, and if you talk to Tidradio, tell them that their 1800mAh battery is a deal breaker. I'm not touching it if it's not 3000mAh. And I'll be checking.

@@HAMRADIODUDE » Unfortunate. The TD-H6 (Baofeng BF-H6) is such a great little radio that it pains me to see Tidradio put it's name on such a piece of garbage. When Amazon's Early Prime sale was on this was cut from $80 to $60 and I was considering buying one. I looked all over for an FCC ID for it and couldn't find it, so that was a red flag... You're not the first person to say they were soliciting positive reviews, that added to my apprehension. But yeah Odmaster is unavailable on ANY of my devices so I said no.... Like a day later it was yanked.... Yeah TIDRADIO sells mainly rebranded clones, but the H8 was their chance to show something original and they cut so many corners it's ridiculous.

Now that the gen2 of the TD-H8 is out are you going to put one through the testing hoops? K8MRD released a video and the power output on UHF has been dramatically improved, but he did not test for spectrum purity. If you're not looking at Yaesu, Icom or Kenwood. You're taking a big risk. I've dealt with a lot of Chinese companies and I don't think even 10% can be considered honest. They build as cheap as possible and I don't mean with cheap labor, but low quality components, and sometimes parts that are stripped from old equipment. If it's an American or Japanese company in China that's totally different. If all you can do is spend 25 dollars vs 200. I can't fault you. Money is tight for everyone right now. A hamfest or swap meet is probably your safest bet for low price equipment.

All this exemplifies why I have personal policy of NOT buying ham radio equipment that isn't either (a) designed and made in the USA; or (b) designed in Japan and made in Japan, Thailand, or Malaysia; or (c) designed/made in Taiwan---by respected manufacturers. These people know exactly what they are doing: make a production run of cheap, poorly or incompletely designed stuff and do what's necessary to sell it in a big market like the US. The fake FCC ID is the dead giveaway that this is premeditated. Once the items are in the marketplace, they make demonstrative efforts to "correct" errors and incomplete firmware--but the production run got sold and a lot of money is in-house. Reputation? The next model will be sold under a different brand name, maybe by a different Hong Kong- (or elsewhere-) registered corporate entity. This disrupts and undercuts the established ham radio suppliers, making their efforts to compete less successful economically. What if Kenwood decides to stick with high-end audio/visual and drop its line of hand-held ham gear. ICOM doesn't need to sell VHF and UHF ham gear--they are the Motorola of Japan. After all, the Baofeng UV-5R and its offspring in the $25.00 to $80.00 price range are a pretty good deal for the budget-minded ham... until they are all we can get. When these terrific value, really non-compliant suppliers deliver competent, honest designs we should avoid them like the you-know-what.

Will not be buying a Tidradio radio unless those privacy issues are resolved, along with the tech issues, along with the fact that they need to stop with this behavior where they tried to dis-acknowledge issues. That's a problem.

What's your FCC label say? Because I still see nothing new. I'd really love to know. I guess I could make a few phone calls if I need to, but I really think there's nothing in the system.

The radios are complete junk I also was lied to just yesterday by Tidradio because your correct the FCC labels are bogus just like the radios are! I was kidding whith the other comments I just Hate Tidradio what a joke they are ans the software updates I think make the H8 worse now my transmit led doesn't work only works when it wants to!! The radios keep freezing and it's just complete garbage the only thing that's working correctly is the arrows! They just better stop making or trying to make radios and leave that job to anytone or something 😆 I love your videos keep up the great work we all really do appreciate what you do!!! Thanks and God Bless you and your family! Oh and Im sorry for leaving alot of comments saying goodstuff about the radio, I was kidding but the FCC label thing got me all confused but I think Tidradio sent me a link to the FCC site and now today it's not on there something is not right with Tidradio!!!

Oh for heavens sake. It was impossible to see what you hold up to the camera for 47 milliseconds and then wave it around testing the agility of my eyes. Then there's the ear muffs. It isn't clear why this seems to be a "thing" for people that are not listening, but talking! The bigger the better.

I don't want to come off as a "sad ham," but I have some suggestions for reviewers such as yourself. If the radio isn't completely legal, don't review it. By legal I mean actually FCC type accepted, not just have a bogus sticker on the back. If it's a combination ham and GMRS radio, it ain't legal, so don't review it. If they somehow get by these hurdles, yet they have spurious emissions all over the place, don't review them. Giving these cheap chineseum radios any press if they don't meet legal requirements is just wrong. Getting more of these cheap pieces of garbage sold won't help the hobby.

I think you came off just fine.. thanks for the suggestions and not a demand. Allow me to play the devil's advocate for just a moment. If I receive a radio that has bad harmonics a fake FCC id and their Bluetooth app is literally stealing users passwords in plain text, and I don't say anything, I'll be hung from my neck for not telling everyone. For me, it feels no matter what I do, someone will try to say I was wrong and "should do it this way" (that's why I appreciate your suggestion as opposed to telling me what I should do).. so, it becomes conflicting. Then of course, where should I draw the line? FCC part certified radios which can be illegally modified for gmrs? That would mean no Yaesu, icom, Motorola, etc.... So I felt I did the best I could making the public aware and hopefully getting people to realize they've sent this company their passwords in plain text....while I understand what you're suggesting and again appreciate that, I don't know if it's that easy? I have an idea for companies like Yaesu, icom, and Kenwood to potentially kill this issue, but at least 2 of those companies wouldn't give me the time of day....
