Wanted to wait and get a Digirig to try with my Xiegu G90 but ended up getting an ICOM 7300! I ran into exactly the same problems with it, Hamlib Errors! Well I found your video late last night, but was too tired and aggravated to mess with it! So this morning, I started off praying that I would get help from above!!! I followed your guidance and it came up and ran perfectly on the first attempt ! The Lord is my Shepherd, Amen and thank you for your help! None of the other gurus even mentioned that the 7300 came with preset FT8 if after version 1.40! I actually have version 1.41, plus I still had to download the ICOM USB Drivers... Thank you so much! Very nice video -- especially timely after the Icom firmware update. I just noted a few additional items that should be considered. 1) It is important that your computer's clock be accurate and using some type of clock synchronizer would be helpful. 2) the Icom drivers must be installed BEFORE connecting the radio to the computer per Icom. 3) it is unclear if these settings are now part of the FT8 preset in the radio and how to return to the mode the radio was in prior to the setup.

Awesome video, thanks for much for doning it. Though overall I'm still unable to transmit. I've gone over this video about half a dozen times and confirmed I have anything set correctly, and have the drives, and see that I can control the radio by changing bands etc. I can do the test CAT and it's green, I can test the PTT and I can see that the radio is going into transmit mode. I can decode things coming in but when I enable Tx.. everything blows up. I get error opening sound card type errors, can't control the rig, want to go into configuraation again messages, etc. my IC7300 is stuck in transmit mode, I have to hit the tranmit button to get it to stop transmitting. I've reset the radio, rerun though setting changes, unplugged and plugged in the usb cable. rebooted windows countless times. it seems that all I can do is listen and see the list of call signs, I'm unable to transmit. Also addition if I hit the tune botton, either I can't get any ALC at all no matter where I put the PWR slider, or again I get the errors of unable to control rig, revisit the configuration again, which yet again the transmit is stuck open. v2.5.4 of the software... anyone else run into this? Is there different software thank WSJT-X for FT8?
@HAMRADIODUDE2 жыл бұрын
If I am reading this correctly, it sounds like the radio can be detected in CAT and starts to go into transmit mode, THEN pops up that the radio is having troubles communicating. My best guess is you have an issue with RFI in line. I would suggest using quality cables between your radio and your computer, maybe throwing some T240-43 Toroids in line to catch some of that RFI and finally, adjust your Icom ic7300 sound card volume down by using a combination of the Windows sound properties and then the PWR adjustment bar on the right, in WSJTX. I know you mentioned some of this you have already tried, but I would maybe try some toroids. Which antenna are you running? As far as other software, I'm not sure. I think I've heard about JTDX, but that may be based off WSJTX as well. Good luck!

Great video Sean! I am thinking of replacing my Yaesu ft-450D with the IC-7300 and this video helped a lot. I have a couple of concerns: 1) I am on Windoze 11 and cannot downgrade for reasons unrelated to Ham Radio. I read somewhere that Win 11 does NOT support that interface anymore. Is it true? 2) Using my FT-450D and a simple interface to a USB audio card, I messed up a few things on my computer, including the USB audio card itself. I am sure that levels were set up wrong, but for the next try I am thinking of using some 240-43 toroids for cables going from the transceiver to the computer. Have you any suggestions about this? Thank you a lot sir!

Another question. What does the "-------------10m" on 10m mean in WSJTX FT8 reception. Thank you for the answer. Cordially.
@HAMRADIODUDE Жыл бұрын
That's actually something set up in the settings, by going to file and settings. This basically allows you to see when you switch the bands, or what band things are being decoded on. So if you switch to 20 m the line would show 20 on it. "_---------------20m". Hope that helps. But you could also disable it if you choose to by going into the settings

Hello, and thank you. I no longer have the ic7300. I sold it in order to fund more radios. I did however take a look online and do remember briefly having a similar issue (not sure I mentioned it in this video). If this doesn't work, what error do you see when you try to transmit? Thanks!

Hello Dear Om First of all I use the French English translator from Google because I'm not very good in English. LOL. But I hope you will understand anyway. I have a problem with my ICOM 7300 connected with WSJT-X- and I did exactly as described in your video. Everything works fine but!!! There is a problem. On my ICOM 7300 when I set the RF POWER button on the ICOM 7300 to 25% it tells me 50 w and +. So even adjusting very gently with the RF POWER button is either barely 3 w or so above 50w. The ALC and the rest is good. Is this a misinterpretation of the ICOM 7300? if indeed it tells me the real output power that is not good for the power transistors of the transceiver. Otherwise I don't know how to fix it. Do you have an idea. See you soon. Kind regards 73. Joel/F8MGW

Hello ! I am sorry for the delay. One thing you may adjust is your audio settings from the computer to the radio. I believe I understand the question correctly. A few things to check: 1. is the slider bar in WSJT (on the right, labeled PWR) adjusted properly? Also, is the output audio volume on the computer too low? Maybe adjusting the volume slightly will produce better results? I hope I was able to help!

The FT8 presets available when using firmware version 1.4 appear to set the modulation to USB-D. This seems fine for the higher frequency bands but it seems that for a lower frequency band like the 40 meter band the mode should be LSB-D. I’ve seen numerous youtube videos showing use of USB-D modulation in the 40 meter band. If I’m correct, it seems that Icom’s FT8 presets only apply to higher frequency bands. Your thoughts on this matter will be appreciated. To deal with this on my radio, I’ve configured two additional presets, one I named FT8-USB and a second called FT8-LSB, but I’m not sure that my new presets are necessary. - Thanks! (KK7CSC)

Just a quick question. Is there any reason why you cannot be transmitting 100 watts ? I am currently using an ICOM 706mk2 and the only reason I would consider upgrading is the ability to tx 100w digital. cheers.
@HAMRADIODUDE Жыл бұрын
Hello. This video is made a long time ago so I don't really remember. I would assume my reasoning for not transmitting a hundred watts on digital was because I had an antenna attic and it was creating some nasty RFI. However, you might not get a full Hunter Watts depending on your ALC settings. Again, don't really recall, unfortunately. Good luck!

@@HAMRADIODUDE Thanks so much for the lightning reply. I only asked because you stated 20 watts. I have been speaking with Fred, WB4QOC and he is encouraging me to get a 7300 but I need to see some advantage. Being able to tx 100 watts on digital would be such an advantage. cheers

@@w00dsta It's my pleasure. I think one of the reasons I don't or didn't run a hundred Watts through the 7300, is I like to be extra careful with my equipment. Thanks Dude. For years I have had WSJTx PWR slider control ALC exclusivly. I set power output only in the 7300 and use the PWR slider to adjust ALC to 1 bar. Suddenly this morning the PWR slider started adjusting the power output of my 7300 instead of only changing ALC. I watched your instructions carefully this morning but find no answer to my problem. Do you have any idea why this would change from adjusting ALC to adjusting power output.?

Thanks for the great tutorial...Everyone else's tutorials always left something out, getting me nowhere. This got my 7300 to actually key up the xmtr...but...while I don't get any reading on the ALC I am not getting any power output. I have my RF set to 22% and MIC gain at 49%. The PWR slider bar is at about 60%. What am I missing?

In Program WSJT-X go to settings. when you get to the last place you tick a circle, tick "none" or "fake it". There is some sort of step missing in programing the radio. That's why I didn't tick "rig". You do not have to work split. I will figure out what step it is but haven't the time lately.

Hi, great video! I have just got the IC 7300 and covered your suggestion, but I have a issue. Nothing on the meter on the bottom left of the screen, and nothing on the waterfall. the audio setup is on USB audio codec. I read that other guys have similar issue.....someone fixed it? '73 Stefano

Thanks for the excellent video on setting up FT8, just got my 7300 this week all the menus and settings have me a little nuts. I do have a question, how do I get it out of data mode? And does 7300 default to working split in data mode or do I have a setting wrong? Thanks again for the great video.

Hey there! To get out of data mode you could just switch the mode on the radio by hitting data and then there should be an option for lower side band or upper side band. However, I got rid of the 7300 so I can't reference it myself. I'll tell you what I can do, if you're still having troubles with this let me know and I'll pull out my ic705 which I think is about the same graphical interface

Thank you for such a well-laid out video. Do you have an idea when Icom will release the same firmware update for the IC-7610? (it's only 1.3 for my 7610)

I don't see the link to find your grid square. Am I missing something? Also, the WSJTX link is bad.
The process for this may not be the most current, I am not sure.

Just watched your video, set up word for word. I have no TX audio on FT8. Newbie here and trying to figure this out.

A nice detailed series of steps. It would be helpful if you had an inset video of the alc metering while you were making power adjustments on the FT8 software. One more thing... I think you missed the time sync step in the computer -> 4th Dimension... Everything else is great! 73 KK6RSL

Great suggestion! Next time I will put the ALC on the video. Additionally, thanks for opointing out the time sync. Anyone reading this, you need a time sync program for WSJTX to work correctly, otherwise you are missing out on contacts. WSJTX recommends NTP - www.satsignal.eu/ntp/setup.html

Unfortunately, I no longer have the 7300, so I cannot answer that. However, I haven't had any other conflicts with my 705 (different radio, but seems promising for the 7300)

Complete nube question(s)..... I've never worked digital modes before so this is a bit confusing to me. Please bare with me. So is your FT8 tx/rx frequency completely control by the FT8 software? Or do you still need to use the vfo on the radio? Is the radio "mode" controlled by the software as well? When I wanna go back to SSB voice, do I need to go through the radio menu and select all the previous settings? I try digital modes but I might be in over my head here! My head is spinning! LOL!
@HAMRADIODUDE3 жыл бұрын
Hey Hey Thor, sorry for the delay. So in WSJTX there are two options, to use the Radio to change the VFO or have WSJTX "Fake It". Regardless, these are both done automatically after setup and they don't need to be changed between TX and RX. When you want to go back to SSB, you will have the ability to hit a botton to turn off the ft8 preset. Let me know if you have any questions and i'll do my best to help.

I would guess it's most likely not seeing the radio or some setting is not correct. Do you have the correct com port selected?
