I wish I had known about the practice test before I did the test. Luckily, with that book for a week, I only got one wrong. Awesome book!😭👍

The CCARC north of Sydney used to do a one day course with the exam at the end of it. If you've read the book fully and then take the one day course you've got a good chance of going home with a pass. You may find a club in your own area are doing something similar.

Keep in mind that in Aus there is no requirement to ‘climb the ladder’ and take the levels in order. You can test straight to Advanced if you choose to do the study up front.

Wow what great timing you just released this. Ive just started looking into HAM. I want to be able to reliably communicate from Brisbane to near Jamestown south Australia. I used a HF prediction site, and it seemed to suggested i would need to operate between 4.1 to 15Mhz to achieve this. Does that sound about right?
@HamRadioDX

Yeah either 40m (7MHz) during the day or 20m (14 MHz) should do the trick 👍 Awesome and good luck with your study and applying for your licence 👍

For Standard or Advanced, we also need to have passed a 30Q ‘regulations’ exam at one of the levels.

30 yrs back i moved to Perth WA and guy down the road had a van and like 4 radios and i thought this was so cool. I remember there use to be like 3 electronic books you basically had to read to learn from to be able to answer the questions to get your license. i found that you had to do Morse code and that killed the idea for me to get into Ham, im a bad speller. Now I'm 57 and thinking to follow this again now knowing there is no MC :) so how does Vk3YE book "Australian Ham Radio Handbook " differ to what your promoting "Your entry into amateur radio"?

As for studying for the test and learning all the basics, in my opinion it's 100x better because it's targeted to learn exactly what's needed, easy to read, great pictures and photos. You need it!👍 No, I do not have shares in it. Haha Good luck... It's not that hard, just follow the book and you'll pass. Do the practice tests, though. I found those after I did the test but they will help you as well as calm your nerves. 🍻🤠🇦🇺⁷³

Peter VK3YE’s book is also a good starting point, but is more geared toward general operating and not a real study guide as such. Still a fantastic book and recommend picking that up too.

Any person can gain a ham licence no need to study if you can operate a cb radio and known the examiner I would suggest advanced type licence to be the go

HI, is that book still relevant with all the admin changes? Should I be asking my local library for a copy, or does it help local club to buy training materials?
@DD5LP

Yes I believe the clubs get the book at a slightly reduced rate, so they make a small profit.

Damn, with no background or study and just watching a bunch of your videos, I managed to get 17/25 or 68%.. 😢 Soo close! Any chance I can be cheap and get a second hand manual or borrow from the library? 😅

Nice! You're well on the way then! The manual is pretty cheap, only $35 and it will fill in the blanks and help out in the future with getting started anyway. Good luck, let me know how you go.

G'day Mate, just working through my foundation handbook and noticed (bottom of page 70} on a foundation license i can't use and more than 10 watts max output, for the life of me i can only find used 20+plus year-old radios everything else new is 60watts100watts, what everyone using ??, mate if you could kindly give me some tips please
@HamRadioDX
@HamRadioDX 6 ай бұрын
Hey mate. Most modern radios can be turned down to 10W, so even though it specifies “100W” that’s the maximum power that radio will do. The good news is - if you buy one of those radios and run at 10W, you’ve invested for when you upgrade to Standard and can run 100W 👍 Also most handhelds are 5W so you can get started there, but HF is where it’s at if you’re keen 👍
