So I'm running similar setup to you, FT-991A with a Heil PR-781. From the FT-991A, using a Heil AD-1YM adapter, (one side a heil 1/4" ptt switch) the other side 3.5mm to 1/4" adapter => 1/4" audio cable to a mixer, and the mixer to the PR-781 via XLR cable.
@HamRadioTV3 жыл бұрын
Oh good deal! Yeah, most dynamic mics will work with the voltage on the mic jack from the radio. But on a condenser microphone, you will need the phantom power from the mixer. Either way, it's all good fun!

73's, if I'm not mistaken Heil does makes the adapter kit that mates the XLR TO THE Radio's Mic input plug. . However I like using the Mixer approach a bit better. Great demo on the use of using a pro audio Mic. Or as some musicians would say Stage Mics. Those Mics are a plus when using them for Ham radio for Clairity!
@HamRadioTV5 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are correct. Heil will sell you the connector for your radio and then into the Mic you choose. But what I couldn't find, is Heil selling the adapter from your radio to a line input on the mixing board. I also wanted to run it through a DI box (isolation transformer). Thanks for watching! 73

I've made my own connecters and homemade adapters for rack gear For use with all sorts of radios. Ptts I've made with old xlr cable and plugs and the audio connection right to the mic jack. I'm so tired of making this stuff. By far go with Heil's ptt( I just bought it) it's so well made and you can replace parts. Heil also has the audio connection from the rack gear to your mic jack ready for a ptt switch. So no more burn holes in your wife's antique table and you won't have to worry about the cat nocking over the soldering iron onto the carpet... The pr40 sounds great with rack gear If your experimenting. You did a great job with your adapters and probably work way better then mine and it's neat to see others do it!

Great video and something I'm certainly thinking about - but I got a bit lost at teh DI Box ! Is the signal chain : Mic (XLR) > Mixer I/P (providing 48V Phantom Power) > Mixer o/p (jack - adjustable Line Level) > DI Box (jack) > DI Box (XLR) to TxRx via new cable ? Thanks for your help .
@melming87513 жыл бұрын
Why do you use a direct box with a vocal mike? You usually use these with a guitar or other instrument.
@HamRadioTV3 жыл бұрын
The direct box acts like a isolator and only allows the audio signal to pass. You don't need one of these, but it would be best practice to keep and ground loops/hums away from your audio.

What about going through the back of the radio? Which ACC port would you use? Some radios it's better to use the back connection..
@HamRadioTV4 жыл бұрын
That will depend on your radio. The FT-991A only has a RJ45 in the front that will take mic in. Also, certain radios can only power certain microphones. Using a mixer allows the use of any mic and also gives a lot more utility to do other things or send audio to multiple radios.

Do you know if this could work with a Yaesu FTM-7250D? It is my mobile radio that I use as a base, it has a MH-48 DTMF microphone with a 6 pin connector. So long as I match the connections like you, I think I'd be on the right track. However, I'm interested in using the mixer to help me add a morse code key and my computer for SSTV but I am not sure if then I would also need to include a PTT switch for those lines too... which I assume would come from the main line going into my radio? You have all good thoughts. I would just pick one thing first and do that. You can run a XLR mic and mixer on just about every radio. What is the reason for passing the mic audio through the transformer?
@HamRadioTV3 жыл бұрын
It will keep the radio and the mixing board physically separated in the event a ground loop is present. This could be from the 12VDC circuit and your 120VAC ground. It will work with out it, but could put noise on your signal.
