I've raised baby hamsters in the past and its completely okay for the babies to be in a smaller cage when they're that tiny in my personal experience. The bedding we give our hamsters is not the same thing as what hamsters would have in the wild and is much more prone to caving in. Tiny bodies aren't yet strong enough to burrow for themselves, which can cause issues if the bedding is too deep. One way to create deeper bedding thats safe, is to build Popsicle stick structures so that when the mother burrows through them, its more like a tunnel and less likely to cave in than loose bedding freely sitting in the cage. Smaller cages also encourage fearful hamsters to become more secure in their environment, as everything is closer together and much more easy to access. Baby hamsters and their mothers are fine in smaller cages and I'd argue its better than a large cage because it can be stressful for a mother hamster to raise her babies. Once the babies reach 4-6 weeks (and entirely weaned), you can transition them to a more appropriate adult size cage, along with the mother. Larger cages are great for preventing boredom, but trust me, the mother is very occupied taking care of her babies. She's not stressed or bored in there. I feel like people commenting saying they need 6 inches of bedding and the minimum requirement fail to recognize the difference between a regular hamster, and a mother raising infant hamsters. I also feel like some of the people commenting this have never actually raised baby hamsters. Its important to tailor the care needs to the individual hamster. One size does not fit all. It is very situational. The minimum requirement is best for healthy adults and baby hamsters that are at least 4-6 weeks old (6 weeks is more realistic, as they're still a bit clumsy and very tiny at 4 weeks). This is coming from someone with actual experience raising baby hamsters. I cant stress enough, the importance of individualized care.

Aright here we go, The cage is actually supposed to be small because if the cage is too large, the baby hamster can get lost and possibly die as well. You can’t put too much bedding since hamster babies are too weak to burrow so If bedding collapses, than that’s not good. But I do agree that you shouldn’t put the father hamster in the cage as well as a wheel in late pregnancy so well done

Hey! your video is very cute! However, I'd like to offer you some constructive criticism! The hamsters would really benefit from having a larger enclosure and lots of bedding to burrow! It is also better to have removed the wheel when you have babies! Another tip is to keep hamsters separated as they are solitary animals and have a tendency to fight to the death :( If you're looking for more tips check out Victoria Raechel! She has amazing hamster tip videos so you can give your hamsters the best life you can :) Please make sure to thoroughly research an animal before getting one as hamsters require a lot of care and big enclosures :)

To anyone who is unaware, in the beginning of the video there seems to be soft store bought nesting material ( not okay for hamsters or any rodent) instead put some shredded paper towels or paper bedding is fine, also regarding that the cage is too small and more bedding should be provided ( this is okay for the young hamsters for now but must be upgraded to at least a 450 square inch cage and six inches of bedding. Also please keep the hamsters separated (father and mother) they are solitary species. I could add more but that is just the gist of things. EVERYONE IN THE COMMENTS: EDUCATE YOURSELVES. I agree that the wheel should be removed while the babies are there, to avoid accidents, but i am almost positive that the person who made this video is a lot better at this than you. The mother needs a smaller cage, with less bedding while she has her babied so she can’t lose them, and you can see that they upgraded in the video as they got bigger. Im not sure what is wrong with the water, but i assume that there is some baby hamster formula etc in it. If not, they should DEFINITELY get a new waterbottle, that water looks disgusting. But remember, before correcting someone else you must have your own facts right.

As someone working for a hammy rescue for years I can assure you that the babies don't effect the minimum cage size or the minimum amount of bedding. Hamsters aren't idiots. They won't 'lose their babies'. Otherwise they wouldn't be able to survive in the wild. Please stop defending poor hamster care. Also they shouldn't be housed together cause there's a high risk they'll fight especially while there are babies. The mother can get stressed and eat the babies or one of the adults might die from fighting. There's lifes at risk and there's nothing to defend about that.

If they aren't, then I do agree with you that the cage is way too small and there is not enough bedding. I also think they could go to munchies places (KZbin channel) because she has lots of good information about hamsters.
@emiliaandersson31694 жыл бұрын
That cage is way to small for hamsters and dont have enough bedding, the minimum size for a hamster cage is 450 square inches (the bigger, the better) and the minimum of bedding are 6 inches in atleast a part of the cage. Bin cages are recomended becouse they are cheap and a good size. Other than that It’s a cute video.

hamsters need a smaller cage while raising their babies, so they don’t lose them etc. same with the bedding, they could get lost. when they are ready to leave the mother will get a better cage

This is appalling hamster care!!! And of course the mother fought cream because she was trying to protect her babies if at ANY point the mother feels stressed she will eat them!!! The male should NEVER be pit back in with the babies and you shouldn't of housed cream and cookie together in the 1st place. Dont even get me started on the cage... you also shouldn't have kept the wheel in there when the babies were born. Please do your research and dont breed hamsters because 'they are cute'!!!

Also, if you readers of this comment don't know, the mother eats the babies when it feels like they will not survive to prevend their own stress and the suffering of the baby. 😢 It is sad but true.

Also I highly suggest watching some of Victoria Rachel's videos she can guide you through unlimited hamster care and help you get through with all these babies that you have also make sure that when you're picking up those little furry hamsters you are cupping your hands and letting them walk into them instead of picking them up by the stomach it can damage their bones a little bit or at least the ones that they have so please make sure that you do that as well and again no hate I really just want your cute for a cuddly little hamsters to have a great life

Cage is too small Wheel is too small Not enough bedding Bad breeding conditions Recording them fight without intervention Touching them too soon Picking them up dangerously PLEASE STOP BREEDING HAMSTERS IN BAD CONDITIONS. DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE COMMITING BIG DECISIONS LIKE THIS. This is APPAULING
@14moti2 жыл бұрын
A small cage is better for newborns. They learn to trust their environment because they can't go far. And it's also easier for the mother because she can take care of her kids without having to travel too far. She also won't get bored of a small cage because she's busy with her kids. But of course, once they are older (4-6 weeks), they need to be separated into their own cages. I think the amount of bedding should be a bit more, but it's fine because babies can't really burrow safely anyway. Either way, much better than being raised in a pet mill..

Go on to say the cage is too small, the wheel is too small, the water is impure, the oxygen level in the atmosphere is inadequate and the trajectory of the sun is not aligned with the planets. Why can't social justice warriors just enjoy a video of cute cuddly newborn hamsters without dictating the lives of others. FYI the bedding is clearly paper-based.

this is disgusting ... anyone should know, the first thing they tell you whenever a hamster has babies is to take the wheel out. you don’t have enough bedding either. you need to educate yourself before you breed two vulnerable animals.

hannah montana people have said hamsters need less bedding while breeding so they dont lose the babies... sounds like you dont know what ur talking about and are spouting shit on a video where the success of babies is clearly demonstrated in the video and their knowledge on raising the babies is proven. As someone working for a hammy rescue for years I can assure you guys that the breeding has no effect on the minimum size or minimum amount of bedding. Hamster won't 'lose their babies' in a bigger cage, they aren't idiots. They are animals with very good instincts. Otherwise they wouldn't survive in the wild. There's no success to be seen here as hamsters are very tough and are able to grow up in even a shoe box. But it won't be a very good time for them. If you truly care for your pets you should never house them like this, not even while breeding!
