I've had plenty of people get angry at me and say "nevermind" to getting a hamster because I tell them the actual size enclosure and things they need. People say that having a hamster is cheap, but with the right care, it can cost more then expected 😅 great video!
@Okk68111 ай бұрын
Honestly….I’d say most pets cost more than expected. *Especially* small ones where you literally have to build their home. People just shouldn’t get a pet if they can’t afford it or aren’t willing to pay up for their well-being because they just want a small cute animal to look at then shove in a tiny box which basically tortures them until they die, probably sooner than the expected lifespan.

I am now making an entire slideshow on hamster care with my only source being this KZbin channel. These videos inspire me to speak up to my dad to convince him to buy a new cage. It's so nice to see hamster recommendations/minimums are going up. I've been in the hamster community for over a year and I started out with watching videos that said it was recommended to have 450 square inches of floor space (the minimum). Now I'm seeing a lot more people on Reddit, KZbin, and other social medias that are going by German hamster standards, which are much better. I've also seen a lot of people are recommending the larger minimums and I've seen so many better cages than before. It's only been a year and the community has improved so much. I'm on Reddit frequently because I am the main moderator in r/hamsters, so I regulary see people improving their care. It's really nice to see one of my favorite KZbinrs making such a wonderful video. Thank you so much Victoria ❤️

Miss Victoria, I must thank you oh so much for your dedication to informing people about how hamsters should be kept. I recently purchased a syrian hamster, and I did exactly what first time hamster owners do. Her cage was only a 20 gallon aquarium that was 24in L. x 15.5in W. x 16in H, a 9in. wheel, generic food with a ton of sunflower seeds and corn, no sand bath, 3 in. of bedding, and just a few chews. Once I saw all your videos, I was so disappointed in myself. Now my baby has a 30in L. x 24in W. x 24in H. inclosure with a glass viewing side, and a chicken wire lid. A 12in wheel (safe plastic wheel, no ridges inside and is not a wire/mesh wheel) a sand bath, 4 hides, a balanced diet of proteins and seeds with very few sunflower seeds and corn, 10 in. of bedding (paper based, botanical hay, & aspen bedding), and a crap ton of safe chews. Thank you oh so much for giving me the info I needed to give my little girl the best life.

Pet stores get their animals from pet mills. They’re places where small animals like hamsters are placed into small, crowded plastic bins and bigger animals like dogs are put into cages alone with no room to move or even stretch. The mothers giving birth to these animals are forced to breed over and over again, whether they like it or not. This causes them to be aggressive. When the mothers can’t breed anymore, they are abandoned, thrown out onto the street or even shot. Yes, you were rescuing one hamster, but now the pet store will get the pet mill to breed more hamsters to fill in that hamster’s spot. If the pet store is your only option for getting a pet, you can do it, but please rescue from a animal rescue or a reputable breeder. Victoria has a video about that called Where Should I Get My Hamster, or something like that. I recommend you watch it, it has more information about this

The first hamster I got was named fluffy and she was living in a small cage with tiny tubes and barely any enrichment. She also came from the pet store and get this, she had NO TEETH. So we didn’t have to worry about her teeth and she couldn’t chew her toys. I even took out any big foods from her seed mix and left the little ones. She had no sand bath, a 6 inch wheel, one hideout, and one day I found her in a DOME of bedding that she created because she barely had any room to burrow😭 My second hamster, (current), has a 150 qt bin cage with a sand bath, 12 inch silent runner, multiple hideouts, 11 inches of bedding on more than half of her enclosure, a variety of chews, water dish, veggie dish, gets an hour of free roam time in the bathtub, and she is scatter fed. I never would have come this far if it wasn’t for you Victoria. I am still upgrading and learning and I hope we can learn about hamsters together and we fix all of our mistakes do our hamsters have the best lives possible. I actually uploaded a hamster video on my channel if you wanna check it out. I am aware of the lid, I will change that don’t worry. I am taking any suggestions so make sure you read the desc as well. I can’t wait for your next video!

My mom looked for a cheap option but a good option, we found a 75 gallon tank and we immediately bought it. After we put i’m in the cage we was so happy . Because of you i stoped putting him in a ball, trying to snuggle, feeding him to much, and more. He was doing so much better because of you. Thank you for your videos. I discovered you after buying the cage in the pet store and seeing quickly that it was way too small - and within a week, I suspected Sammy wasn't happy. Poor little Sammy was already picked on in the store by the female hamsters and lost an eye... had to be separated and was put in a small toyless plastic transfer cage . I went to see him everyday for a week during lunch and I don't think the store would have kept him if I had not come every day to see him and talked about taking him home. I thought he was going to be so happy right away in my home... but he is staying quiet - what seems like all the time. I have had him for a week now and I started searching for help on KZbin because of his lack of activity. He will sit quietly and sweetly in my hand and obviously loves me to hold him, and pet him, but I'm quite certain he doesn't like his prison cage. I have ordered a much larger home for him but only 24 x 14 with 2 levels - plus many of the things you have recommended - all arriving this weekend - and I can't wait to set it up for him. But you recommend a minimum 40 x 20. I'm so desperate to get him in a bigger cage, I am going to switch him this weekend and then go larger if he doesn't come out of his shell. Is it possible that he is just really quiet? I also ordered a safe playpen so he will get some playpen time too which I'm also hoping opens him up a little to playing. Thank you again. I love seeing young people sharing their knowledge!

A slate tile is also very helpful for keeping a hamsters nails short. Our hamster really like to sit on his and groom himself. I bought a 4-pack of slate coasters on amazon, they are the perfect size.

Hi Victoria, I’m sure you may not see this comment but! I got two gerbils in 2018 on my birthday and ever since then I knew my love for animals and rodents, to be honest I wasn’t great when I stared and I feel bad, but everyone starts somewhere! I started in 2018 with my two gerbils, named a Holly and pearl I love them so much and actually a few days ago Holly passed away.. I was so proud of myself for raising her to live 4.5 years and Pearl is still alive. When I first got them they had a tiny critter trail cage and I was told they are tiny animals so they need only a tiny cage, Christmas 2020 I got a Russian hamster! I really loved him, though I didn’t know we’ll care back then and he lived 1 year! His name was buddy, he had a little critter trail cage. After a while I discovered your channel I subscribed right away and I realized my mistakes after Buddy died a got a new hamster, a Syrian hamster named Angel and I went straight to wallmart and grabbed a big bin and made a bin cage and found out they need lots of bedding so at this point I have both of my 4 yr old gerbils and my young hamster so I took very good care of them from that day forward and I think they have a great life now Angel is all most 1 and Pearl is almost 5 and Holly just passed away… :( I’m still very sad and miss her so so much, she passed away 3 days ago January 11th, Thursday, 2023. Last time my hamster died I got a new one right away and I notice now that that was a mistake (that was a year ago) and this time I’m gonna wait a few more days to make my choice on what rodent I want to get in place of Holly.. I’m saving for another pair of gerbils I think… I just want to say, Thank you so much Victoria I’ve learned so much and went through so much for my babies! On your channel I’ve learned: they need lots of bedding, they need proper size cage, they need a food variety. And so much more! Your helping me get through my hard time of loosing a pet who’s been with me for almost 5 years.. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

These videos help so much and I can only think of how many children (including myself from when I was that young) have these pets in tiny cages with not enough bedding! I bought a Syrian hamster yesterday for the first time in my adult life and definitely gonna do everything right. Because my husband has a lot of allergies I bought antibacterial bedding but I am gonna replace that real soon since I myself have an allergic reaction to it... It was a cheap pet store brand..

Love your videos, they're so informative. I had hamsters as a child and looking back I did so much wrong. I want to right these wrongs by providing the best care for my future hamsters.

for bedding, if you get kaytee clean n cozy, please check for and remove anything that isnt the bedding ! ive only used it once and mine had weird almost cardboard like paper that seemed to be packaging from idk what.. ive seen videos with people finding the same paper in it, and some have even found bits of gloves. theyre pretty easy to spot when your de-compacting(?) but just make sure to double check !

i’m kind of ashamed to say the only things i’m doing right is a cage that is ~400 sq inches, a wheel that’s 8.7 in, water, food, bedding and some chews. i’ll definitely be updating my hamsters cage thanks to you!!

What is the best hamster 🐹 breeds for beginners? What food brands do you recommend to mix or fruits an veggies to mix for a healthy meal for them? Lastly can you make video about making a travel cage for them?

I really love animals and all of your videos let's me learn so much about them better. You're a really great pet owner, because you do a lot of research before you do something and a great KZbinr because a lot of people who are pet lovers like me watches you and you make sure that they understand what they need and need to do for their pet's. Even I had a pet hamster but unfortunately it didn't last so long, the name is Hammy a male hamster, a maybe a few months like two to three. I didn't know so much about them, it was kind of a early surprise for my birthday. Today is my birthday but I have no hamster and I'm planning to own another but with more experience and research. Thanks to you😊 You are awesome person keep up the good work 🥰

Videos been up for a year but Im really happy to have found it - Today out of the blue my mama said she wants to get me a hamster. Im a nocturnal person and with some research (including your videos) Ive found out how scary of a fit the lil guy is :sob:. From the images, Im sure theyre a syrian hammie, and apparently already has a great enclosure - but im so glad for videos like these. Theyre lifesavers, literally and figuratively. Thank you so so so much

Yay I have all of these! I got a hamster recently after watching your videos and asking my parents for over a year. I’m so glad I finally have my very own hammy! I named him Potato and I built him a bin cage. Thanks for helping so many people improve hamster care!

You can make multi chamber hides by using cardboard and cutting slits in them to connect them to eachother!

I opened my hamster cage today and found my hamster, Janna, dead. I was really upset, but thanks to you she had the best hammy life and hamster could have squeaked for. My mom wants me to get a male hybrid dwarf on Friday, but I don't know if I want to rush it so quickly.

Hi it’s me again. I was in fact forced to get a hamster 5 days after her death. The hamster we got was a girl dwarf and she ended up being pregnant so we had to return her. The following day after that I was once again forced to get another hamster and I got another female Syrian and we named her Cinder. She is just the cutest but she has bad anxiety so I have to take things easy with her. I love her so much. I miss Janna so much, but I’m just happy to know she lived a good life.

I agree. I definitely don't recommend cardboard cariers or anything cardboard to hold hamsters in. When I bought my hamster home from the pet store, it was a total mess! She was in a cardboard box and she chewed holes in it and we had to block them with useless stuff that she could also chew through till we got home, and then we had to keep her in the bathtub until her cage fully set up!

Love your videos. 💙 My son and I watched them before our hammy. We adopted her age unknown and gave her such a happy life while we had her (which unfortunately was too short 😢). My son is almost ready for the next one (I totally am!). 💙

My goodness you certain are one hell of a brilliant woman arent you, love that! I didnt have a wheel when I got my hamster so I fabricated a larger one from an old filament roll I had. it runs silent so much that all you hear is the pitter padder of Ghost's tiny feet and it always makes me go "AWWWWW". Love your channel, getting a lot of useful info and I thank you for that. I have one happy hammy.

I’ve been watching you for so long preparing to get my hamster! I’m so glad you properly educate people instead of making 17 tubes connected together into a maze for views. Can you please do a tutorial on how to make a good lid for an aquarium? i can’t find a bin the size id like for a bin cage, so I’m thinking about using a 50+ size gallon as the enclosure, but I need a proper lid and I’m lost!!

Sand bath=9 in across bowl Bin cage=510 square inches DIY triangle house base=5 1/2x4 1/2 Water dish= 5 inches across Water bottle =L-2 W-7 DIY cardboard chamber= 18x7 inches Food dish=5x3 inches I plan on getting a cage upgrade soon I have some toys for him to (3 cardboard balls with holes to put treats inside, cardboard tube covered in popsicle sticks, bamboo tube *I am pretty sure it’s bamboo* a half cardboard tube with holes in it that the hamster can easily fit through, and a small fence like structure made out of popsicle sticks so the water bowl does not slide off of the DIY chamber) this is all of my stuff and I’m getting my hamster either tomorrow or Friday!
