Libram you need the concentration dmgup. If you want tobtank in dungeon or hc you need a bit spell power 300+ and a decent mana pool. Without it you oom like 10 secound and you need to chog a mana pot or rune . Its quite expensive if you eat up 5-10 mana pot. Try to play with mage int buff realy nice early. Def cap first, 490 without resilience. After start hc gearing and raiding to reach the 102.4 avoidance. Probaly you dont need to maintank in raid. Try to hit hc early with 200+ spell power and 450 def+. Buy mana potion and some dark rune for emergency. Dont sell your defensive gear, only if you get a direct upgrade. Sometimes you got a nice drop with different stats, but you need to compensate the change with oter items to stay in def and avoid cap.

While I agree with most of the item choices here. I have to say in order to actually thrive as a prot pally, assuming your dps are halfway decent, you absolutely MUST have a spellpower based weapon. This is the highest source of damage you can get from a single item and is essential to keeping the mobs attacking you. Weapon damage is largely irrelevant for protection pallies as our white swings do next to do no damage and no skills increase our physical damage done. While you will often see tank focused weapons given as an option in most BiS or gearing guides, the simple fact is that the meager defensive boost you would get from a weapon is not worth the loss of the bulk, if not all, of your spellpower. The only other way to get spellpower would be through item enchants and conumables, and while the enchants are definitely advised they do not give enough to be your sole source of spellpower. As for consumable, while advised for raids using them for dungeons is a very unrealistic thing to expect from your tank, and dungeons are arguably where snap threat is even more important since for most raids group they will give the tank a window in which to generate sufficient threat to alleviate any fears that the dps might take aggro off the tank.

Edit: realised this video was meant for people getting gear before doing dungeons. So feel free to ignore the comment. But most people will be looking for pre raid gear. For that, my comment still stands. And like I said below: if you want to tank in BC, just tank while leveling. You'll basically be raid ready after dinging 70. Why would you sacrifice defensive stats for spellpower on so many items instead of just getting a spellpower weapon with similar stam, no hit (which is a waste stat) and really just some lost defense as the only stat you'd miss? This gear isn't even near the crush cap, either. If you level by doing dungeons and buy 2 pieces of felsteel you'll hit 70 with much better pieces and enough rep to buy some great items, too. Farm TK dungeons for maybe a day, get a good shield somewhere and you're basically almost in full pre BIS. Given how fast you can gear up by going for the right pieces, it just doesn't make any sense wasting time going for sth else.
@MellonVegan4 жыл бұрын
Quick tip for everyone planning to be a pally tank in TBC: level with dungeons, entirely. Get almost all your rep and gear as well as attunements while leveling and, if you have enough time, you can be fully pre BIS raid ready and kick back after 1 week of play for alliance or 2 weeks for horde.

@@MellonVegan This video made no attempt to be a Pre-raid BiS gearing tutorial in its content or name. For people looking to gear up for raiding, they'd usually pick a video with a clear message for that. "You'll basically be raid ready after dinging 70." - This isn't necessarily true. Apart from the obvious issue being the inability to do many of the dungeons we need to until level 70, you also may not receive the loot drops you need during your run-throughs. I would agree that his choice in weapons is highly questionable since if you complete the quest, "Varedis Must Be Stopped," you can obtain "Summoner's Blade" allotting you 103 spell damage and 11 spell critical strike rating. However, I would disagree that hit rating is a wasted stat since it IS helpful in maintaining threat on a Paladin just the same as a Warrior. Sure, I wouldn't worry about seeking out gear with hit on it, but I certainly wouldn't say it's a wasted stat. It's true that this gear does not reach crush cap but the important thing to note is that he's using this gear as an example of what to wear when entering level 70 normal dungeons where you don't have to worry as much about that side of tanking. Most Paladins would face the same issue upon hitting level 70 - Druids wouldn't have their maximum mitigation for quite a while after hitting level 70 - the only tank to have crush immunity fresh at 70 would be Warriors.
@buttonmashers71334 жыл бұрын
@@MellonVegan "...buy 2 pieces of felsteel..." - I'm pretty sure you missed the point of the video. These are items that you don't have to buy or worry about farming for hours to get the materials or to worry about loot dropping AND you winning the roll. "...enough rep to buy some great items, too." - This would depend on what items you're looking at. "Farm TK dungeons for maybe a day..." - What loot do you expect to get in those dungeons, exactly? Sure, items like Spaulders of the Righteous are good, but they're from Botanica and don't drop in the other 2. Sure, the quest rewards may be nice, but you certainly don't have to complete them more than once for that. "Given how fast you can gear up by going for the right pieces" - Dungeon drops are not guaranteed to drop AND you need sufficient gear to progress into the higher-end dungeons.

Continuum Blade only requires rep with Keepers of Time and gives 30 stam, 11 int, 121 spelldamage and 8 spell hit (not a completely wasted stat for Prot Paladins. To top it of it is a 1.8 speed, which is very good.

For a Protection Paladin, here are some things you can look for during Classic: Trinket: Styleen's Impeding Scarab (This trinket gets buffed in Burning Crusade and offers 20 Defense plus Block Rating AND Block Value) - This drops from BWL. Trinket: Glyph of Deflection (This trinket stays relatively the same after TBC is released but is still very strong for tanking purposes) - Unfortunately this does drop from Naxxramas and you'll likely have a LOT of competition for it. In all honesty, most other items from Classic won't benefit Paladins come raiding Karazhan since we'll be focusing on a new style of tanking and will require an amount of spell damage/mitigation we can't get from items in Classic. Even Thunderfury is completely useless.

From personal experience during retail go for mitigation first and foremost. Early on this is annoying but luckily block rating scales pretty aggressively so just stack the shit out of block rating after def cap. The best thing a tank can do is hold threat and not get directly hit (Holy Shield is very useful it lasts its CD and in most cases you'll have that or Rebout up) The second shield for instance is better and I'd go with damn near any spell power weapon to not have to use all that spell power gear to hold any semblance of threat, you can gain a lot more mitigation doing that. Mana pool for a tankadin is pretty much useless, spiritual attainment, BoS and SoW with the judgement if you need mana, stacking intellect shouldn't even be considered a reason for picking a part of gear as a tank.
@buttonmashers71334 жыл бұрын
1.) It is true that Block Rating scales very well in regards to how much is required per 1% of Block Chance. However, most gear (Pre-raid) that has block rating has either no defence rating or too low of it to pick it until you're able to sacrifice some defence skill (Which usually doesn't happen until at least you're raiding Karazhan) 2.) Blocking doesn't mean tanks aren't being hit. You can Dodge or Parry a full attack, but you can't block an entire attack. You still take damage - it's just less than if you didn't block. "The best thing a tank can do is hold threat and not get directly hit..." - Assuming you mean the tank mitigates as much damage as possible, you literally just said the job description of a tank, not the "best thing a tank can do." 3.) I do agree in terms of his weapon choice being the complete wrong choice. HOWEVER, his first choice in shields is not wrong since he is above defence cap and is currently lacking MUCH of the required spell damage he'll need to hold threat properly. 4.) Mana IS an important stat for Protection Paladins for a few reasons: a.) Spiritual ATTUNEMENT, by the way, requires the Paladin to be healed, thus requires the Paladin to be taking consistent damage and if the Paladin is off-tanking in their raids, they may be running out of mana on many fights since they're not taking consistent damage. It's also only 10% of the heals they receive, which means they may only be regenerating miniscule amounts of mana) b.) For Paladins to create massive amounts of burst threat in the opening pull of a boss fight, they need to be able to cast several spells immediately and before any heals will be cast. c.) Seal or Judgement of Wisdom isn't the greatest thing to rely on since it's only a chance you'll have mana restored AND it shouldn't be cast on the mob until several seconds have passed and you (the tank) have sufficient threat.

Prot at the start of the expac just stack block rating, it scales hard into % and being mitigation cap is key over everything else because of crushing blows and the odd bosses with parry/resets. From personal experience during TBC I stacked block till mitcap then you go for exp cap and then start slowly swapping some of the block rating gear for better form of mitigation(like pure avoidance stats, dodge and parry) This video is mmmm but with even doing some basic dungeons ontop of it you can easily get mitcapped before Karazhan as a prot pally thanks to Holy Shield basically being a passive 30% block in a vast majority of cases (unless you decide to tank a whole room at once by yourself)

@@reduct_ You are correct for Retribution Paladins not topping the meters and that they can provide blessings and having Improved Sanctity Aura is always nice. However, if we were discussing to bring a healer or dps Paladin, it would be a healer every day. (The reason I say this is because you mention not taking up a healer slot) As far as the Paladin maintaining seals on the boss for all the paladins; their attacks only refresh their seal, not the others. You are correct regarding Protection Paladins being highly regarded as great tanks for heroics and regular dungeons. However, Paladins are still great main tanks for all raids. Our TPS is superior to Druids or Warriors when it's an Undead or Demon target, which just so happens to be 95% of the Burning Crusade roster. Similar to Classic WoW, Paladins will likely out-tank both Warriors and Druids, especially given the buff to our list of abilities. And yes, our mitigation can stack up against Warriors, minus their pesky Last Stand ability.
@swiftcheese41034 жыл бұрын
@@sdewey4152 I do agree that meeting the 102.4% cap is ideal as soon as humanly possible. However, given that shield block is not something that you can gem for, minus the Meta Gem for +5% shield block value, but we're trying for rating, not value. In fact, with Redoubt and Holy Shield (Yes, I realize Redoubt is not taken into account when getting to 102.4% cap) it is simple enough to reach it without stacking anything but stamina. Yes, it is true that block rating is awesome for Paladins since we generate a lot of threat through Holy Shield but to tell someone to stack it is ludicrous. I presume you mean Expertise when you say Exp, so here's my take on it. Melee hit rating and Expertise are pretty much both useless for Paladin tanks. Because so little of our threat comes from melee attacks, why bother stacking either of those? It's a waste of gem sockets/enchants, etc. If you had said you try for spell hit rating, then that would have been a different story. But to stack Expertise? Again, ludicrous. Firstly, Holy Shield is not a passive bit of mitigation. Passive implies you don't have to activate it. Secondly, running dungeons won't provide the gear required to achieve uncrushable. At the very least, you're looking at Karazhan gear. Unless every enchant and gem is geared toward mitigation and not stamina.

Felsteel helm, felsteel gloves, felsteel leggings, heavy clefthoof boots, heavy clefthoof vest. Every single gem in stamina, and you can easily tank every lvl 70 dungeons by having 10+k hp unbuffed and 460/470 defense. Keep in mind, 493 defense is overkill for elite lvl 68-70 mobs, and 9k hp unbuffed is really low if you were to pull a pack of elites, even in normal lvl 70 dungeons. Prot pallies, stack that stamina boys!
@swiftcheese41034 жыл бұрын
Paladins should NOT use Clefthoof armor, ever. I'm not sure where you see that as beneficial. To begin tanking at level 70, Paladins should use... Boots = Ascendant's Boots (Shadow Moon Valley quest) - (722 Armor/+22 Stamina/+21 Defence/+23 Block Value) Both pairs of boots share the same amount of defence rating and gem sockets but Ascendant's Boots provide more armor and block value. Chest = Breastplate of the Righteous (The Steamvault) - (1164 Armor/+30 Stamina/+28 Intellect/+20 Defence/+23 Spell Damage) Heavy Clefthoof Vest carries +24 Defence (So it's an increase of 4 points which is the equivalent to approximately 1.60 Defence skill.) It boasts +45 Stamina (Which is a +15 stamina increase over the breastplate) BUT it severely lacks in armor which means you would be taking additional melee/ranged damage, causing the extra stamina to be completely pointless. As the vast majority of players will likely intend to progress into raiding/heroics once hitting level 70, 493 is not overkill. I'm really not sure what you're implying there. 490 is a defence rating all tanks (Except Druids, of course) should be shooting for FIRST. Defence also offers mitigation from additional dodge, parry and block chance. Additionally, 9,000HP for regular dungeons is sufficient, especially if your mitigation is decent. The only correct thing you said was that Paladins should be stacking stamina (After reaching defence cap, about 200 spell damage which is usually from weapon + enchant and enchant on gloves, and ensuring they're as close to uncrushable as possible.)

As a paladin you'll be off tanking and trash tanking like I did during TBC. Best cause of action at the start of the expansion is; Def cap Block rating to reach mitcap Exp cap for parry/resets As the expansion progresses you'll be able to swap a fair bit of block for pure avoidance as oppose to mitigation but this also means we make great boss tanks thanks to a Holy Shield on 1 v 1 being basically a free 30% block thanks to the CD and duration being the same and you wont run out of HS charges in most cases without proccing rebout as well. I still adhered to this in WoTLK before they removed 99% of block rating gear, had a lot of fun tanking the zombies on Gluth taking only decimate damage lol I'm guessing they removed block rating because of people like me that would eliminate commonly used tactics because of poor scaling.
@swiftcheese41034 жыл бұрын
@@sdewey4152 Firstly, no, Paladins are not exclusively reserved for trash tanking or off tanking. As I'm sure many Paladin tanks can attest to this. Back in Burning Crusade, Paladins excelled in AoE tanking since our Consecration affected more than 4 mobs at a time. However, we also main-tanked the majority of content since many bosses were Undead/Demon and our threat exceeded that of our tanking counterparts. I know several Paladins who main tanked content into BT, including myself. I think you mixed up wording, as it is supposed to be, "course of action," but anyway, here's how it SHOULD look for our priorities: 1.) Defence Cap 2.) Obtaining uncrushable is VERY difficult without reaching Karazhan/heroics since we have to balance an extra stat that Warriors do not. However, it is recommended to get as close as possible to 102.4%, that is true. 3.) Ensuring you have a spell damage weapon (Most weapons have at least 120 spell damage for us; Crystalforged Sword, for example, has 121) We usually enchant the weapon with +40 spell damage, allowing for us to have close to 200 (You can also enchant +20 Spell Damage on gloves, as that is better for threat than the +2% Threat enchant) 4.) Stamina Again, I will mention that expertise is completely useless for Paladin tanks as 99% of our threat does NOT come from melee attacks. We don't shoot for Melee hit rating, either. Heck, Consecration, which is, undoubtedly, one of our best threat generators, doesn't require anything as it CANNOT miss a target. Avenger's Shield and Judgement are spells and do not require Expertise or Melee Hit Rating. The only argument you could make would be for the Seals. Assuming we're talking about boss pulls, the only seal we generally use is Vengeance, meaning we have approximately 10-15 seconds to hit the mob before they drop the debuff. Avoidance IS mitigation... Mentioning that you're great boss tanks due to Holy Shield is counter-productive to your first point of only being used as off tank or on trash-tanking... See, we ARE great tanks for any position, but having Holy Shield never running out of charges does not make it so. If Holy Shield is not running out of charges, it's unlikely that it's even being effective, thus, you're not mitigating damage. (With a duration of 10 seconds, let's say that the boss attacks every 2 seconds, which is being generous as it may be quicker; that means that you may go through FIVE TOTAL charges of Holy Shield. That relies on EVERY attack being blocked which is obviously not going to happen. Just because we go through the duration and still have charges left does not mean we are mitigating more damage. It simply means that we likely ate a lot of the damage and didn't block it. Chances are good that you won't be seeing ReDoubt (Not ReBout) proc that often since it's only a 10% chance to occur. I'm not sure why you brought up content from a completely different expansion, especially one that saw MANY upgrades to Paladin tanks.
