You failed to mention two of the best: #2. Napolen at War, SPI (1975) - a simple yet superb quad-game that really conveys the feel of the battles as described by participants and (better) historians. #1. Napoleon's Last Battles - Designer's Edition, SPI 1976, with the Command Magazine counter variants (more "historical" less "balanced/gamey") - a masterpiece of elegant simplicity, where timing, use of terrain and allocation of forces is critical! It's a truly fabulous game - especially with the aforementioned counter variants! It was great to see Napoleon from Columbia Games! Still have my original 1972 copy! Still love it! Did not care for CnC Napoleonics - too many historical inaccuracies derived from regurgitated hearsay and lack of research. Sold it within a week.

Okay, so what is your opinion of Avalon Hill's Empire In Arms? This is my favorite Napoleonic war game. I know it is a long game and requires much book keeping. However, I love the victory point bidding system and the need to acquire victory points to stay dominant. This system allows any of the seven player powers to win the game. Another major plus, for me, is the tactical chit selection system. With superior chit selection, a disadvantaged army has a chance to defeat a more powerful one. And if the optional rules for naval battles are used, these become more engaging. I think the game allows for great replayability. Although the time to set-up and extreme length of the game are major negatives for most gamers. I'd like to know your opinion.

@@TheDiscriminatingGamer War and Peace covered most of the Napoleonic period that you could either play scenarios of the actual battles with what ifs or as a Grand Campaign from 1805-15. Rules were simple to follow and the hexagonal map was like the 3rd Reich Map. Best to play 2 player but possible to play with 6 players. Good Solitare game that I took with me to South Korea. I even used the different coloured counters in the MERP system to represent Angmar-Rhudaur-Cardolan-Arthedain & Lindon. Wooden Ships allowed for ship to ship battles from the American revolution to the Napoleonic Era that allowed a degree of realism which was hard to find in a Naval battle games for the time. I have similiar one for the Civil War period called IronClads. Another one I have is War of !812 by Columbia Games with the Blocks which is a quick enjoyable 2 player game. While not a board game but a series of Computer games. Hpssims (John Tiller Games) does a lot of turn based Napoleonic-Civil War ect games that give the feel of a board game.

Was overjoyed to hear that you put up C&C's Napoleonic... when I went into Ancients, I bought ALL the expansions... and it's only the $350.00 price tag that has kept me from already owning all that. “Not going to see a lot of hex and counter games here.” The condescension, it burns.
@TheDiscriminatingGamer Жыл бұрын
Not at all. I like hex and counter games, but in the past when I've made videos like this I get a lot of negative comments from because they don't like the games that I do. Usually this is followed by a list of their favorite games that are exclusively hex and counter games. I made the comment so that people who are expecting a list of hex and counter games won't feel compelled to watch the video and post a disparaging comment.

Napoleon 1806 and Napoleon 1807 are both really good games. 1807 is easily in my top 3 war games.

Cody, I think you missed a really good one. I like NAPOLEON AGAINST EUROPE from Hexasim. Its Grand Strategic 2player Card Driven along the same lines as Paths of Glory(except NAE uses Areas Control and not Point to Point as POG).

Commands and Colors! Curious, as this is probably the simplest and fastest of them all and yet very enjoyable. What does this say about our desire for complexity and depth? Is complexity overrated? Hmm...

I enjoyed Fading Glory from GMT (four battles from Napoleonic 20 series) and Worthington Games The 100 Days and At the gates of Moscow (both I've been told are not too different from C&C Napoleonics, however, I cannot say I have not pay C&C yet) Here's a lame joke: Napoleon almost won at Waterloo, he was just a little short.

Even though it doesn't fit in a top ten list, I would have added an honorable mention for SPI's "Napoleon at Waterloo". Is it a great game? No. Is it even a good game? Also no. It did, however, serve as the gateway drug to get countless people into wargaming.

Interesting.

Obviously leaving out Zucher series (OSG), War & Peace (both versions) and Nations/Empires in Arms (Avalon Hill/Compass) is understandable, as those are all "bigger" hex and counters games. BUT you should check "The Invasion of Russia" and/or "1813" from Europa Simulazioni which are intermediate complexity games with GORGEOUS components. Cheers from Canada!

Your title should be top 10 "Strategic" Nap games. Not 1 tactical among the List...Aka-- Clash of Arms - La Battle Series

C&C Napoleon is tactical. And there are several Operational - level games on the list as well.

Compass’ Coalition is a mess of a game. Compass is producing 1st edition “playtest” kits. Wait for a 2nd edition for a “cleaned-up” game.
