No she's not. The contents of her story are strictly her own, not necessarily the accurate truth of what's happened in Korea. She is a fiction writer.

Many of her novels are based on a major historical event in Korea - 5.18 Democratic Movement of 1980. During the Movement, hundreds, if not thousands, of Koreans were shot and killed by their own government, but the party responsible still denies it until this day. Back in 2012 when she was writing one of her novels, Korean government - ruled by the same party - blacklisted her in an attempt to stop her from publishing anything. The same party is still in power today in Korea, and they still continue to ban her books in libraries, and spread false rumors about 5.18 Movement.

As a Korean, I can definitely let you know that the reactions are split. They do congratulate her as fellow Koreans, but the contents of her works are her own, not necessarily accurate. She is a fiction writer. There is a group of excellent writers in Korea who definitely deserve the Nobel prize.
@YoungYoung-k5u3 ай бұрын
Historically, the Nobel Prize does not determine whether a writer's legacy will shine brightly. I myself don't equate the Nobel Prize as an indication of the writer's greatness. As an example, James Joyce and James Baldwin never won the Nobel Prize but I consider them to be among the greatest writers. I am not qualified to say anything on Han Kang's books because I never read her works.

Upon Han Kang’s winning of the 2024 Nobel Prize for Literature, Korean senior writer Bok Geo-il mentioned in an interview with a politically conservative talk show host that literature is microscopic while history is telescopic. Therefore, regardless of one’s political convictions, we should congratulate Han Kang’s achievement in literature despite her views on history and politics, which are so different from those of conservatives. I agree with Bok’s point of view. When looking at the Gwangju Uprising in 1980 through Han Kang’s microscopic writing, we see a dark tragedy that is very graphic. However, if we take a look at the same incident with a telescopic view of time, I think Han Kang might thank Chun Doo-hwan for providing the very first seed of her novel “Human Acts” and later her significant success in literature. Chun successfully cracked down on the uprising and later became the President of South Korea, leading the country to economic success. This telescopic view creates a comedy filled with irony.

Han Kang said that the Korean War was a proxy war between the great powers. However, Han Kang did not say anything about North Korea attacking South Korea first. Is Han Kang a supporter of North Korea?! If not, Han Kang should have said something about North Korea attacking South Korea first. The reason I say this is because there are South Koreans who actually support North Korea.
