I feel like such a little kid because when you said "I'm fairly sure you haven't heard of this game before" I wanted to raise my hand and yell "I have I've heard of it!" lol

What a great explanation! On bgg, there's a solo variant with an AI opponent. It's designed for Koi Koi, but it works just fine for Sakura (Hawaiian style) too. I was trying to learn Koi Koi and found all the yaku too confusing. But your explanation made the Hawaiian yaku easy. So I think for solo play I'll stick with that. Thanks for a great mnemonic! I made a screenshot about 10 minutes in, where you laid out all the cards. I printed it and marked it with notes I made from your two videos. It's a great resource!

So pretty the modern card deck! I wish the store was still open :( Thank you so much for keeping this video I have just gotten into this beautiful card game. My best friend is Hawaiian and I am going to surprise him by learning this game and buying him a deck. He would talk about stories like yours about his grandfather playing this game and teaching him this. With your help, I'll get to even beat him at his own childhood game and we can both laugh

Spell I really love the last that you showed it makes figuring out what the matches are a lot easier than the other way like a pig the bird and the Butterfly is a very confusing stretch in my mind as a set.

$1.50 at Daiso. :) I thought I was buying ordinary playing cards with Japanese flower designs on them. When I opened the box to see them, I found out that they were a totally different type of card deck. So I end up here learning something new; it's fun and exciting!

An update for those that are considering buying the cards. Unfortunately, Shirokiya has since been out of business due to COVID, and you’re likely to find an empty spot at Ala Moana. However, you can still buy some in Hawaii. Idk about the other islands, but at least in Oahu, I would suggest going to Longs Drugs, Don Quijote, and Marukai for the traditional deck or even the western style deck. Both decks are not as high quality like shown in the video, but they get the job done. If you want to buy the Hanafuda Hawaii Style cards or the Hanafuda Na Pu Hawaii cards made by Helen Nakano, there are some locations you can buy it from: 1. Don Quijote 2. Na Mea Hawaii 3. Nohea Gallery 4. Lyon Arboretum 5. Bishop Museum 6. Foster Botanical Garden There’s also H-Mart if you like to buy the Korean version of the deck. Otherwise, they’re readily available online, and can range between $10-$30 depending on the brand!

ooh i am born and raised in Hawaii. My aunty taught my sister and me this game when we were little but she modified it to be a simpler matching game. We never played with yaku. But now that I'm older I want to learn the "real" way. Thanks for sharing this info! (and yes, I TOTALLY want to make Hanafuda art to put on my walls...you're not alone in wanting to see the gorgeous cards as home decor) Btw, I had never heard of the full moon card called "bozu"...but there is a Japanese flower called bozu that looks like a sphere. In reference to the bald man...we call that "bolo head" haha

Thank you so much for introducing me to hanafuda cards! I've never seen them or heard of them before, but they are so beautiful, and I especially enjoy games that have beautiful cards! I am gonna check out Amazon to see if I can find a beautiful deck of these cards for myself! P.S. I have enjoyed all of your videos that I've seen so far including Onirim and Friday, and this was no exception -- you are an excellent teacher -- thank you!

Oh my God I just about fell out of my chair when you started talking about sleeping when you were a kid and hearing your parents playing hanafuda in the other room and laughing because I'm adopted I'm white American my mom is Japanese and my dad's military and well my dad would be TDY my mother would have her girlfriends come over who are all Japanese women and they would play and speak Japanese all night long and exactly they would love and they would smack their cards down and I could hear it all night long and I always wanted to learn how to play unfortunately my mother has had a lot of health issues from accidents and so she's been kind of where she hasn't had the ability to play because of her hands being broken or her shoulder being broken or her back or what not and now she's in a nursing home and I've been trying so hard to find someone to teach me how to play this so I can play with her before she is gone. It would give her the most pleasure to play with me. She tried to explain it to me about a year-and-a-half two years ago but she has a hard time speaking in English to where I can understand what she's trying to tell me. I just wanted to tell you I got so emotional when you started talking about hearing your mom play out in the other room because that's how I remember or want to remember my mother in her happier times. I'm a comment again once I continue to watch this video.

I didn't know in Japanese means Flower Cards. So is it called "Flower Cards Cards". Kinda like DC Comics where it means Detective Comics Comics.
@MrMrPopols
@MrMrPopols 5 жыл бұрын
No, in Japanese they call it Hanafuda wich means Flower Cards, so it is just you adding the word "cards" after word "Hanafuda". Normally you would say "Hey its Hanafuda" instead of "Hey its Hanafuda Cards"or "Can I Buy some Hanafuda" instead of "Can I Buy some Hanafuda cards".

Hi there, I know the modern hanafuda cards you showcase in this video have been discontinued, but I wanted to make sure you are aware of these other cards that were released last year. They are on playing card stock, so not quite the same as the heavier tiles. However the artwork is fantastic and simple, which really helped my daughter and I to learn how to play. There are three different decks at the moment, which you can buy separately or together in a nice case. If you still collect hanafuda cards you'll definitely want to check these out! I'm in my 60s When my grandfather taught us the only thing not the same, Gagi no points, Yaku was Yako and if you beat the other team in 4 man by 100 points over them was a Wanta. Winning team would hit the knuckles of losing team with the deck of cards. My grandfather was not Japanese, he was heath inspector and spoke Japanese.

In 1889 a company was founded which made hanafuda cards popular. I'm talking about Nintendo. Back then gambling was forbidden in Japan except for Hanafuda. On September 23, 1889 Fusajiro Yamauchi founded Nintendo Koppai and in 1906 Nintendo had become the biggest playing card company in Japan. Especially the Yakuza was interested in Hanafuda.
