I wonder if Mrs May would have handled COVID better. I have no love for her and her premiership was dominated by trying to stitch Brexit together while managing a dysfunctional party. But I can't help but think that she would have handled it much better

I am pretty sure she would have. Regardless of any other issues I may have with her, her attention to detail would have been very welcome. This is one of the problems with this lot of Tories - ability isn’t what they value. All about supporting Brexit. A lot of talent in the party was wasted.

Looking from the outside as a lapsed Brit, I perceive the UK as an irresistible soap opera. The villains are numerous - from Lord Snooty (God's gift) to Sid Snot (outside a hotel wrapped in a flag). The goodies are in short supply. One MUST hope they are keeping their heads down and saying nowt. The scriptwriters have genius in their fingertips. Awful but a must-watch 😭🤔😂.

The reason people don't like to talk about poverty is because they feel they can't do anything about it. Rory is intensely interested in poverty because he believes strongly there is a way to eradicate it. If we want to reintroduce it back into public discourse, we need to convince the public that poverty has a solution within reach.

How does Rory go from unapologetically reiterating his claim that lockdown didn't go far enough or start fast enough, directly to recounting the ways in which the lockdowns we did suffer pushed tens of millions of our fellow human beings into what is essentially an economic black hole, without the faintest trace of shame? Those who respond to a novel terror with panic and demand unsustainable solutions to ephemeral problems, without thought of the inescapable ruin that others will suffer as a result, should not speak with the surety of the blameless.

Well if the lockdowns were applied sooner they would have been shorter. Also the financial support could still have been better designed even with lockdowns still being applied.

Spot on. The problem with almost all politicians like Rory/Campbell is they focus almost exclusively on the short term. This podcast would be so much better if they took more time for each issue. It was laughable for Rory to protest so much for lockdowns/restrictions but then to show how many millions, especially in poorer countries are later pushed into absolute poverty because of it. On most issues you have a small ideological rant from Campbell and a meek counter from Rory. We can tell you guys have a friendship which is great but lets have a proper debate between you, this podcast could offer so much more.

@@belindathorne9784 To your first point, unlikely; the most aggressive proponents of lockdowns originally promised two to four weeks, but kept finding excuses to extend them. To the second, any mitigating effect would have been minimal. No amount of stimulation of demand will prevent economic contraction if supply is artificially constrained, and have you ever heard of a downturn that only effected the well off while passing over the most vulnerable?

@@simonkapadia7582 I ended up in hospital twice this winter with bronchitis then a quincy. I'm a healthy guy but lockdowns meant our immun systems dropped so long term it's wrecked the NHS further and 1000 additional deaths happened this winter, that's 23 - 59yr olds so not even the elderly. So lockdowns were definitely wrong in my opinion. Your entitled to your own though.

Besides, I was mentioning my experience of being in hospital twice in one winter when I've previously been fit and healthy. Also discussing with medical staff their experiences of working there re-enforced this view I have. So qualified people do have this view. If you'd rather trust politicians and a propaganda expert who pushed for an illegal war, in Campbell here, then that's your choice.
