We have an old Class B that belonged to my in-laws and now we have it. It's OLD, but we'll probably just update the mechanical stuff and keep it going as long as possible. It's well-loved and it will be a sad day when we have to let it go. There's something really fun about using one that is very hard to describe to someone else. If you've never travelled in one, it's well worth renting one for a short vacation to find out for yourself.

Thanks Josh. Your tour and comments about the Pleasure Way class B was very informative! Please do more episodes down the road on class B’s as they are so innovative and in demand. We may be in the market for a class B in a few years-especially as more manufacturers develop and improve the EV technology. My dream class B would be a hybrid. Winnebago’s Rep for its prototype EV class B at Tamp mentioned that the lithium batteries which are stored in the belly of the van really helps to make the vehicle more stable (not as rocky) on the road and in windy conditions. That appeals to me. We shall see. As always, great job, Josh.

Go Canada lol! Thanks for sharing the background of the company. Yup, if you're into class B's - and you have the cash - this is a fantastic choice. It's not for me - had 3 Mercedes work vans and we will NEVER go down that road again especially with diesel being twice the price of gas here. Then again, if you can afford one of these, you're probably not sweating the diesel cost. You probably aren't flinching at the maintenance costs either, which can be a real eye popper. Class B's are a little too small for me but for short trips it might be doable if it was the Transit chassis. The biggest drawback would be the sliding door. Anyone with a minivan knows the sliding door issues - stuck in cold, stuck with dog fur, stuck with glacier silt. I owned a Toyota Sienna the one with sliding doors on both sides, and by the time it gave up the ghost both sliding doors and the back hatch no longer operated all due to gunk build up. Sooooo frustrating lol! I do appreciate the work ethos of this company and just the simple attention to detail. Impressive!

Compressor fridge or absorption fridge(gas and power). A compressor fridge will use a lot of battery power, but be more efficient and trouble free, Absorption fridge will run for ever and use no power just use propane and it will require more simple maintenance. You need a good battery setup for a compressor fridge. A steel body van has no fiberglass issues but it may rust. Glass B are smaller inside so you have to do things in a different way and if you are a big person may not be for you, but because they are smaller you can drive them down narrow roads. To build a good van motorhome you have to have a good design because you are fitting a lot into a small space. I bought a class B of a small RV manufacture, it cost so much to build they decided to build no more because the cost made it uncompetitive . They normally manufacture large motorhomes with fiberglass exterior. I hope my comments are helpful. Good video

My take is that they’re so much more expensive because it’s likely a more durable build (vs a wooden box on a van chassis.) The Pleasure Way Tofino is my dream camper, and I wish more manufacturers did a floor plan like that one!

Hey Uncle Josh! Beautiful coach indeed. The only thing I would be VERY concerned with are the counter top corner(s) by the entrance door. I'm NO engineer by far, but I could see someone getting really stabbed by the corners even by just entering the coach they should be rounded off if possible. Same by the dining area the corners should be rounded off. Just my $0.02 cents worth! We appreciate you teaching us new things, and how you explain it all in a clear and fair way!

PS: Josh, ask them if they can install an upscale passenger side recliner with foot rest that extends when you recline and has massage, cool and heat capability. I can't tell you how much this would convince spouses to justify the high price tag. Husband could be driving and wife could be taking a luxury nap to destination. It could also be another overnight sleeping chair in a pinch if your taking an extra passenger.

@@quinhon1969 I understand the new engine specifications shows more power and is lighter and more fuel efficient than the old 6 cylinder. It is also mated to a 9 speed transmission so it feels considerably quicker. Pleasure-way does build a class b on a Ford Transit AWD chassis as well as the Mercedes. I drove both and preferred the Mercedes.

Wow, that is very interesting. A 2.0L engine is now stronger than a 3.0+L engine. However, I have heard its upkeep is quite high. In addition, I wish it was a AWD so you don’t get stuck in the mud. One more useful option both chassises do not offer is the leveling jacks. I am curious why they don’t offer such useful feature.

@@quinhon1969 If you take a look at all the gear that is suspended under the chassis like tanks and generator and hitch, etc., there’s very little room for another system. I just got back from a month touring in her and never felt I needed a self levelling system.

I'd need more info on the fridge question, like how much width would be given up. Nine times out of ten I'll go for the 12v fridge, but if it's significantly intrusive the walkway needs to remain certified bazookabutt-fluffy-friendly. This is what I've been waiting for Josh, excellent video. I've been camping all my life and at 71 I'm getting tired of the work, I want to get in the driver's seat, turn the key and go. Been looking at Pleasure-Way for a long time, it's exactly what I want. However a bit put off at the price and I refuse to buy when when demand is so high. I think this is starting to change, these are not selling immediately when they are produced, and at least in my area inventory is beginning to increase. I'm watching the market carefully, when I see signs of possible dealer incentives I will make my move. Again, great video, exactly what I've been waiting for.

I know this would add another $10k to an already expensive unit, but I wonder if RV companies could partner with the auto manufacturers to utilize the batteries in these Class Bs into the drive train to make a hybrid system. From what I've seen online, Class B people tend to do a lot of Boondocking, especially in cities and more urban places, so the few extra mpg savings could go a long way. And since Class Bs are already loaded with batteries and already heavy, all the manufacturer would need to do is just add regen braking, hybrid gear box, and electric motor. For example: Ford could take the PowerBoost hybrid system, put it into the Transit chassis, and have instructions for the RV manufacturer to connect the last wires to their batteries. Granted, this is all probably 1,000 times easier said than done. I'm just spit balling here.

@@JoshtheRVNerd That's interesting to hear. Yeah, were a long ways away in battery technology for "eRVs" to practical, let alone exist period. A hybrid would be interesting way to add more incentive, especially if the fuel cost equals or exceeds comparable trailers being towed by a gasoline 1/2 ton or HD truck. Hopefully an insider will give you the chance to be the first to get a peak when it happens.

Remember that Mercedes forbids the electronics add on that will start the engine to run the second generator that would keep pets cool if you are out of unit. "Turbo lag" is the term you were looking for when you were describing the delay between putting your foot down on the accelerator and it takes a few seconds for it to respond. BTW, I had no idea what the price was on this when you started the video when you said they were expensive. As soon as you stepped in I could tell fit and finish already were superior to the towable stuff. Don't get me wrong, a lot of the trailers look very good, but this one is just on another level. This would be even better for road trips for solo or even couples, you could park this one almost anywhere.

I hear that the new 4 cylinder high output engine with the bi-turbo eliminates that turbo lag. Something about a turbo feeding a turbo. Plus the 9-speed transmission change likely really improves the drive, noise, and mpg.

There’s another channel called Meet the Russo’s who have camped in both the Sprinter (diesel) and Ford’s Transit (gas) class B’s. They did a comparison of the two vehicles. They preferred the Ford overall. Paraphrasing what they said about the Ford: taller headroom, more power and constant speed going up long steep highways, comfortable to drive-like driving a car and they said there are more Ford repair facilities than Mercedes cross country. Somethings to consider.

Hi, I looked at both PW MB diesel (TS) Ford Transit (Ontour.) MB has the Adaptive Cruise Control (which for me is a must-have feature nowadays. However, Ford does not have Adaptive Cruise, which is almost a deal-killer for me. On the hand, I like Ford AWD capability and the MB is only a RWD. If they are offered at the same price, which do you think is a better buy (AWD with no ACC vs RWD with ACC)? Thank you.

@@quinhon1969 Just to double check, Ford Transits does have Adaptive Cruise Control, or does Mercedes version differ significantly? Recent 2024 Pleasure Way Ontour 2.2 models are missing it, but the 2.0 has it. It’s back on the 2.2 for the new 2025 models. Though, recent Ontours are suddenly missing the 360 camera.

Thanks for clarifying why class Bs are so expensive. I would never get a Mercedes engine, just my choice, too costly for repairs. I think for 1 to 2 people, the camper vans are ok, but for a family, that's way too small.

Pleasure-Way is the only mainstream B van I would even consider buying due to their superior build quality. However, they definitely aren't perfect, no mass produced RV is perfect. They all cut corners/cost somewhere, whether it be the the electronics, insulation, heater/AC, appliances, etc. There is always some aspect of it that is lacking. Given the crazy high price of these vans, I would probably pass on all of them and order a van from a high quality low volume custom upfitter instead. That way you can have the exact features you want, not just what the company wants to sell you to maximize their profit.

I’m still confused. Pleasureway is obviously a very high quality unit which helps explain the long waiting lists. But Class Bs from Thor and Winnebago are in the same price range and ai doubt that they are the same level of quality from those builders. And their prices are in line with the larger class B motorhomes that they build. A Mercedes Sprinter Crew van long WB high roof, HO diesel engine 2WD 4500 series is an MSRP of $66,000. I very much doubt that the builders of these vans are paying MSRP. The ProMaster is cheaper but only by around $6k or so it would seem. That Plateau looks like about a $184,795 MSRP. Compared to higher end and much larger Class C’s it’s just hard to understand why this is so expensive. Given that a Class C seems to need a LOT more materials and work to create compared to this. Is it that because your forces into modifying a completed chassis that the man hours to build it are a lot greater?

@mattdagger1480

I mean idk why anyone would say they are more expensive than anything else. When you buy a travel trailer then a truck to tow it with its pretty comparable honestly. Let’s say 50-60k (some 70k+) for a truck and the rv would have to be high end to match that of most b vans so let’s say 60-90k. When you realize your buying both a vehicle and a RV the price dosnt seem really high when you consider the specific market these units are apart of. Idk just logic for me wouldn’t consider them “high priced or overpriced” I can’t afford one but still it logically makes sense why they cost what they cost
@mattdagger1480
@mattdagger1480 Жыл бұрын
I just think the main issue is consumers don’t understand or do any real research into what they buy and it’s sad. And that goes for almost every market it’s not specific to the Rv market. I think that’s why most RVs are built to a price point or a weight rating vs actually high quality built to last. People just buy what the best deal is and don’t consider how it’s built or how long it will last. At least that’s my perspective ever since I’ve been hunting for my perfect RV. Just to many “ultra lite, sticker wrapped, lightweight” units on the market. And all these buzz words to me say “do not buy if you want to keep it long term” I may be the minority and assume I am since I’ve still yet to find a absolute perfect Rv in my eyes to date after going on 2.5 years of basically daily research. This is why I think I can’t find something I would actually want to own in every aspect. Some are close but I can always find something I’d consider a weak point in every Rv produced today in 2023. At least for the specific small compact bunkhouse I desire. I can’t speak for other sections of the market as I know what I want and if it doesn’t meet that I ignore it totally.
@DAVIDTATLITUG

Just not true as you can buy a class C for less in many cases.
@mattdagger1480
@mattdagger1480 Жыл бұрын
@@DAVIDTATLITUG you may be correct however you are misunderstanding the entire point. The b is higher because of the specific category it falls into. It’s smaller for a reason and due to that the engineering behind it requires much much more consideration and thought. It’s similar to how electronics act. Smaller more compact results in a overall more expensive product. That takes longer to engineer and produce by the people who build them. Smaller space/footprint = increased resources = higher cost. Not just in the Rv market but many others as well. While your statement may be accurate you have completely ignored the logic behind mine 🤷‍♂️

Regardless of how they are built, spending $100-$200k+ for a van just does not seem smart to me. I think a lot of rich (many temporarily) "tech bros" bought / buy these to do the "#vanlife" remote work thing, How long will that fad last? And they are so skinny....you're cooped up like sardines in there when the weather is bad. Something tells me that this high priced van trend will end badly. These vans are overpriced not because they're hand crafted it's because of demand! People don't want to drive a big motorhome because it scares them, and these van manufacturers know it, so the price reflects the demand! Think about it most rvs being built from the ground up have a lot more process's , but a van is a box with lipstick lol it has all the same features as a big motorhomes except a lot less of them! Van manufacturers know you want them, so thier going to stick it to you! Stop buying them, and the prices will come down
